Former full-back Luke Young admits he regrets his early exit from Boro.

The ex-England man left Boro in a too-good-to-turn down £6m move to Aston Villa on the eve of the 2008 season after just one year.

Young, 34, will be back at the Riverside on Saturday watching current side QPR from the stands as he battles back from a hip injury that has sidelined him all season.

“It’s a shame because had it not been such a fee, the club would have wanted to keep me,” he told the Red Square matchday magazine.

“I had a great rapport with the fans. The atmosphere was electric at the Riverside when we played the bigger teams. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Boro and feel a bit disappointed I was only there for one season.

“In the end moving probably suited everyone. I was 29 and they were offered very good money for me and I don’t blame Steve Gibson for taking it. It was close to £6m with add-ons so he made the right decision.

“It was disappointing because I really thought we’d started to get something going up there. There was signs we were going to be a really good side. Sadly it didn’t work out that way.”
