Rhys Williams is back on Teesside and ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation after a spell with family in Australia
Rhys Williams hasn't given up on his World Cup dream - although he knows he faces a race against time to be on the plane to Brazil.
It looked like the injury-dogged defender would miss out on the finals for a second time after he ruptured his Achilles’ tendon.
Williams, 25, suffered the injury blow in the goalless draw at home to Wigan in January and it was feared his season was over.
But the Socceroos stopper is back on Teesside and ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation after a spell Down Under.
And he says, if he can prove his fitness before the end of the campaign, he could yet go to Rio with Australia.

“My dream of playing in the World Cup is still alive,” he declared. “I didn’t make the last one and I thought this would be the one when I could make a big go of it.
“Maybe it isn’t to be and I’ll have to wait for the next one but time will tell and I’m doing my best to get fit.”
Williams missed out on the South Africa finals in 2010 after being sidelined by a persistent pelvic problem. But he remains confident and says a trip to home city Perth has given him a boost.
“I still think I’ve got a great chance of making it,” he said. “I had the operation six weeks ago and the club said then the next three weeks were going to be the most boring of my career and they suggested I get out of Middlesbrough and enjoy some family time and the nice weather.
“That’s helped my rehab and I enjoyed being back, although it was for the wrong reasons.
“I’ve been seeing Perth Glory physio Chris Hutchinson and he’s been great. I haven’t told a lot of people this, but I’m feeling really good and way ahead of schedule.”
