Middlesbrough's Hertel has been crowned Teesside’s Company of the Year.
The multi-discipline industrial services firm took the top honour at last night’s Teesside heat of the North East Business Awards 2014.
Hundreds of business leaders packed Teesside University’s Olympia Building for the black tie event, which shone the spotlight on the best of business in the region.
Established in Middlesbrough more than 35 years ago to service contracts won in the North-east, Hertel has continued to grow with 1,000 of its 2,500 employees based in the North-east.
Specialising in multi-discipline industrial services for customers in the oil, gas, process and energy industries, the last year has seen the company - which is part of the international Hertel Group - celebrate winning a string of major contracts.
Also shortlisted in the category were Applied Integration UK, a systems integrator based at Stokesley Industrial Park, and Nifco UK, the Eaglescliffe-based plastics manufacturer which produces parts for the car industry.
Company of the Year was one of 11 awards presented last night.
The 2014 honours have included a new category, the Apprenticeship Award, which aims to recognise the importance of skills and training in our region.
Last night Nifco UK celebrated being the first winner of this new title on Teesside.
Since 2011 the company has continued to increase the number of apprentices it recruits.
It also works with local, regional and national bodies such as SEMTA, NECC and local schools and universities to encourage training and skills development.
Nifco boss Mike Matthews, who himself is a time-served apprentice, continues to champion work-based learning, being passionate about making apprenticeships a key part of the company’s recruitment streams.
Organised by the Evening Gazette and its sister paper The Journal on Tyneside the annual awards, held in association with the North East Chamber of Commerce, shine a light on the last 12 months in businesses large and small, celebrating their successes.
All the winners in this sub-regional ceremony now go through to the regional final, together with those from the Tyneside and Northumberland and the Durham and Wearside events. The regional final will take place at Hardwick Hall in Sedgefield on May 1.
