Will K J Anderson is heading to town later this month for Stockton Calling when Algiers take to the HM Bark Endeavour Stage
A Teesside musician’s new venture is earning rave reviews after less than a year.
Middlesbrough-born Will K J Anderson formed Algiers with like-minded collaborator John Goodwin last year and the duo’s debut album, You’re The Captain, is the first fruit of their labours.
Will, who plays guitar and sings the lead vocals in the band, is currently based in Sheffield but he regularly visits to Teesside to catch up with family, friends and the fortunes of his beloved Boro.
He’s heading to town later this month for Stockton Calling when Algiers take to the HM Bark Endeavour Stage at the day long festival, which takes place on Saturday, April 19.
Will, who attended Prior Pursglove College, in Guisborough, said: “I remember going along to Ayresome Park to go to the kids’ club. At the time I really liked Neil Cox and John Hendrie was a great player. My dad’s a big fan of the Boro and we had season tickets in the North Stand when the club moved to the Riverside Stadium.”
Music, however, is Will’s first love. His first band was the fondly-remembered Teesside outfit Dartz, who had a strong following in the area.
Will and John, the drummer in Algiers, met in Sheffield purely by chance. They formed Algiers and managed to agree a deal with independent label Xtra Mile Recordings.
“When I met John I realised that we are like-minded people and enjoy the same music,” explained Will.
“We struck up a bond very quickly and we love writing music.
“Initially, the aim was just to record an album. For this album to come out and Xtra Mile agreeing to get behind it and put it out is a massive bonus.
“We put a lot of effort into that record but it’s been a really enjoyable, rewarding time.”
Algiers road-tested the album last month, embarking on a mini-tour that proved to be very successful. The future promises plenty more shows but the lads are already thinking of a follow up release to You’re The Captain.
“The thing we like doing is writing” said Will. “Some time soon we will get to point where we record another album, it’s what we aspire to do.”
