A cold weather alert warns Teessiders to take action now for extreme weather.
The freezing conditions could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and disrupt the delivery of services, say the Met Office.
There is now a 90% chance of severe cold weather, icy conditions and heavy snow between noon today and Thursday in parts of England, says the report.
Teesside now has a ‘Level 3’ amber cold weather alert which means take ‘severe weather action’.
This alert requires social and healthcare services to target specific actions at high-risk groups such as the very young, elderly and those with chronic diseases.
Teesside also has a yellow warning for snow in place - whilst North Yorkshire’s snow warning has been upgraded to amber meaning ‘be prepared’.
The Met Office says: “Snow showers will become widespread and heavier across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England during Wednesday evening and will continue through the night into Thursday morning.
“Snow amounts will be very variable but over 5cm will accumulate at lower levels in places with over 15cm on high ground.
“Strong and gusty winds will lead to drifting and blizzard conditions at times, especially over higher routes."
Motorists are warned to take caution.
“The public should be prepared for travel disruption and hazardous driving conditions,” says the report.
The top temperature predicted today for our area is around 9C and the lowest is around 0C.
