Former headmaster who influenced thousands of children in Teesside dies aged 76

A former headmaster who influenced thousands of children in Teesside has died at the age of 76.

John Maloy was headteacher at Our Lady and St Bede RC School in Stockton from 1987 until his retirement in 1997.

He had previously worked as deputy principal at St Mary’s Sixth Form College in Saltersgill and also worked at St Paul’s RC and St Michael’s in Middlesbrough.

In the mid-1950s, he was a talented footballer with Newcastle Boys. But when offered a contract with Newcastle’s senior team, he turned it down in favour of a place at a PE teacher-training college in Twickenham.

He went on to teach the subject, as well as French, at schools around Teesside.

Our Lady and St Bede paid tribute to his “professionalism” and “love of teaching”.

“He devoted his professional life to Catholic education and under his leadership the school flourished,” said a spokeswoman for the school.

“He was also a talented classroom teacher and maintained his love of teaching throughout his career, including whilst headteacher.

“John was a warm, outgoing person who was always interested in those around him.

“He was a strong leader who exuded confidence and inspired optimism in his teaching staff.’

John also carried out charity work as a member of the Catenians, which included Water Aid for Africa.

After his retirement he became a volunteer warden on the North Yorkshire Moors.

A father-of-three and grandfather to five, Mr Maloy, who lived in Ingleby Barwick, died earlier this month in Middlesbrough’s James Cook Hospital. He is survived by his wife Kath.
