New paving on Stockton High Street is being ripped up for underground cable work.
A local business owner contacted the Gazette today after witnessing workmen lift a large area of paving at the northern end of the High Street.
The owner was concerned as to why paving only laid a few months ago as part of the £38m regeneration of the High Street was being lifted again.
But a spokesperson for the council confirmed that Northern Powergrid was carrying out work to the underground cables and the paving slabs would be replaced when work was complete.

The finishing touches are now being made to the revamped Stockton town centre.
Over the coming months the final stages of the High Street transformation will be carried out ahead of its official launch this spring.
Soft landscaping is being laid around the water feature to complement the focal point at the heart of the town centre.
Outside Marks & Spencer a new granite plinth has been constructed which will in the future house the Stockton Flyer automaton.
The plinth has a poem inscribed on it which was written by internationally published local poet, Mark Robinson which hints at the town’s industrial past.
The plinth will also serve as a stage for small performances and will occasionally be used for temporary sculptures in a similar way to the fourth plinth in London’s Trafalgar Square.
