Motorists were caught in long delays on the A66 after a spillage caused an accident near the Riverside Stadium.
A lane was closed for just under two hours on the A66 Westbound after a blue Vauxhall Vectra slid on a spilled substance, believed to be oil, and collided with another car.
No injuries were reported in the accident just before 7am today, but the inside lane was closed by police until just before 9am while the road was cleared.
Gritters arrived on the scene to help with clear-up at 8.34am.
Traffic heading from the Redcar direction to Middlesbrough was affected by the incident.
Police were not able to identify where the spillage came from, but said the substance was believed to be oil.
