New Marske Harrier Reece Curtis strikes silver in cross country championship

Reece Curtis was the only Teesside medal winner at the North of England Cross Country Championships in Pontefract.

But the area’s competitors demonstrated why there are plenty of reasons for optimism in the younger age groups.

New Marske Harrier Curtis’s medal came in the Under-15 boys’ race over a 4km course.

He ran an almost perfect race to win to finish behind national 3000 metre medallist Daniel Slater of Liverpool.

Also running well was Josh Cowperthwaite (Middlesbrough AC) who finished in fifth place.

With the addition of Josh Allen in 13th place, Luke Petit in 47th and Oscar Brown in 83rd place, the Middlesbrough AC team were slightly disappointed to finish just outside the medals in fourth position.

Hartlepool’s Richard Morrell (Morpeth Harriers) finished in a highly creditable 11th place in the senior men’s 12km race while Greg Jayasuriya (Middlesbrough and Cleveland Harriers) was the highest-placed runner in the senior race for local clubs with a good run in 29th place.

Highest Tees finisher in the senior women’s 8km race was the evergreen Carolyn Ollis (Middlesbrough and Cleveland) in 61st place.

The junior men’s 8km race saw another Middlesbrough and Cleveland Harrier have a great run.

Jack Willis ran strongly to finish in 17th place and Matthew Bailey (Middlesbrough AC) was just over a minute behind him in 35th place.

Beth Brown (Middlesbrough AC) was 34th in the junior women’s 5.6km event.

At Under-17 level Nathan Baker (Middlesbrough AC) was the stand-out Tees performer.

Baker, the current North-east champion, finished just outside the medals in fifth place on the 6km course, just 10 seconds off a medal placing.

In the Under-17 women’s 5km race, Phillipa Stone (Middlesbrough AC) had her best race of the season to finish seventh, while Hollie Elliot (Middlesbrough and Cleveland) ran well to finish in 38th place.

The Under-15 girls’ 4km race saw a tight battle further down the field between Isabelle Wherritt (Middlesbrough AC) who finished in 33rd place, just two seconds ahead of Eli Barnbrook (New Marske) who was in 35th place.

Libby Hedger (Middlesbrough AC) ran well and finished in 47th place.

Middlesbrough AC fielded a full team in the Under-13 boys’ 3.1km race.

The highest finish for the squad came from the in-form Daniel Currie who crossed the line in a fine 26th place.

With Daniel Payne (107th) Ben Johnson (124th) and Joshua Bailey (135th) out of the almost 200 finishers the young team finished 16th in the team standings.

Laura Havis (137th) and Courtney Johnson (163rd) of Middlesbrough AC were the area’s best finsihers in the Under-13 girls 3.1km race.
