Ormesby Table Tennis Club at the double with second British title win in space of a fortnight

With a brilliant performance by Tom Jarvis, Ormesby clinched their second British League title in two weeks when the club won the Junior title at Wolverhampton over the weekend.

After the first round of matches in October, Ormesby led the table by just one point over London Academy but Ormesby’s chances were adversely affected by the injury to Josh Harland who had contributed significantly to the success in the first round of matches.

The system of play required Ormesby to play two more matches in the first round which achieved a 5-1 win against Ireland and a 4-2 victory against the London club, EBATTS.

In the final round of matches Ormesby started still ahead of main rivals London Academy by one point but were then level when drawing with EBATTS in the second match 3-3 after Jarvis had won two and Christopher Wheeler one.

Ormesby beat Wood Green of Birmingham 4-2 next with two victories each from Jarvis and Wheeler, and needed a 3-3 draw in the final match against London Academy to clinch the title.

The deciding game was a cliffhanger as Wheeler lost his first match to England cadet Luke Savill.

Jarvis produced great form to beat Gabriel Achampong at 11-8 in the fifth game, and then came from 2-1 down to beat Savill at 11-6 in the fifth.

The Championship hung on the final set between Wheeler and London Academy’s Swedish player, William Apeoqvist.

After four very close games, Wheeler won at 11-8 in the fourth to clinch the title for Ormesby.

This Championship adds to the women’s title won by Ormesby in Doncaster last week.

The club’s Senior Men’s team are neck and neck with the current British Champions, Sycamore.

The final round of matches will be at home for Ormesby, including the decider with Sycamore, over the weekend of March 14/15.

The second Teesside club to excel over the weekend was Northfield who were comfortable winners of Division 1 and, subject to confirmation, will gain promotion to the Premier Division next year.

Northfield won four and drew one of their weekend matches.

They beat Formby from Liverpool, Sussex Alliance and London Academy by 5-1, Ellenborough by 4-2 before drawing their final match with Greenhouse London 3-3, which was after the Championship had been decided.

Northfield’s was a very good all-round team effort with Matthew Leete winning 17 from 20 and Joe Clark and Nuradin Muktar winning 15 from 18.

Northfield, under the coaching of Carole Moore, have excelled year after year to move their team up the divisions and are likely to be one of the premier teams for next season.

Ormesby’s second team were in strong contention to win the Fourth Division.

But they lost the decider, their final match to Cardiff by 4-2 after leading 2-0 and therefore had to be content with second place.

Kaine Macdonald produced the best results for Ormesby with 18 wins from 20, while Calum White won 11 from 16, Josh Weatherby nine from 14 and Michael Ashwell seven from 10.
