Bookworms both young and old were dressed to impress as World Book Day celebrations were held across Teesside today.
Classrooms were full of colourful characters and exciting events were held for people of all ages at libraries and other venues.
Children would be forgiven for thinking it was a game of spot the teacher at Middlesbrough’s Park End Primary School, where every staff member - from teachers to receptionists - dressed up as Where’s Wally for the day.
As well as having stacks of fun trying to spot their own teachers in the crowd and dressing up as their own favourite characters, the children also managed to raise £350 towards funding for a minibus, said deputy headteacher Julia Rodwell.
Julia said: “Everyone’s had a really good time. Quite a few children turned up as Where’s Wallies too.
“We need £22,000 total for a school minibus and we’ve got about £8,000 left to raise. Families have been so supportive.
“The day is a lot of fun but it also inspires the children to love reading.”
Over in Redcar, youngsters and teachers at Lakes Primary School all dressed up as their favourite literary characters and enjoyed some fun, but educational, activities.
Deputy headteacher Lauren Furness said each class was allocated a “champion author”, including Roald Dahl and Julia Donaldson, and took part in activities related to that author’s work throughout the day.
There was even more colour to be seen at Ingleby Barwick’s Barley Fields Primary School where the headteacher, deputy head and admin staff were all dressed as Oompa Loompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
And there was also plenty on offer at three special events to mark the day taking place in Stockton.
Stockton Central Library hosted a book stall where teachers, parents and carers could bring children to use their World Book Day vouchers. It also hosted Teesside author Gabrielle Kent, a computer games lecturer at Teesside University, as she promoted her debut fantasy fiction novel, Alfie Bloom: The Secrets of Hexbridge Castle. And Pupils from secondary schools from across the borough rounded off events at the library with a quiz.
