'Cleveland Police is stronger and working better now': PCC Barry Coppinger sets out new police plan

Barry Coppinger's police and crime plan released yesterday and his main aim is to make sure the force 'does more with less'

Cleveland's police and crime commissioner said the force has become “stronger” since its high-profile corruption probe as he sets out his annual police and crime plan.

Developing and increasing neighbourhood policing remains one of Barry Coppinger’s key policing plans as he looks ahead to the next year.

Working more closely with the fire brigade and ambulance services is also one of Mr Coppinger’s aims.

The PCC said the force has learnt from and is moving on from the long-running Operation Sacristy - a probe into alleged corruption within Cleveland Police and the Cleveland Police Authority.

The investigation came to an end earlier this year when the crown prosecution service announced no charges would be made.

He said: “I think a lot has been learnt. Cleveland Police is stronger and is working better now. It has been a difficult process but the vast majority or people who work with Cleveland Police have just carried on and done a fantastic job.”

Mr Coppinger’s police and crime plan was released yesterday. He said his main aim is to make sure the force “does more with less.”

He said: “We have financial challenges and that is our main challenge at the moment - as it is for all public services.

“And I think we should be making better use of our work with other agencies and services such as the fire service and ambulance service.

“I am committed to Cleveland Police as a standalone force, but if we can identify areas of collaboration we not only make our teams stronger but can make the best use of our resources across Teesside.”

Another objective is to strengthen communication with the public through social media.

Mr Coppinger said: “We are encouraging neighbourhood officers to use social media to let residents in their areas know what is going on and what the outcome is.

More and more people are using social media to keep in touch and find out what is going on and we need to be involved in that.”

Improving restorative justice and developing services for victims and witnesses are also aims of the police and crime plan.
