Great Ayton pancake race: Pictures as more than 100 children take part

Children had a cracking time when they got into the spirit of pancake day - albeit a week early.

Youngsters gathered at Great Ayton’s High Green for a pancake day racing event - with over 100 children from Roseberry Primary, Marwood School and nurseries, Scallywags and Sunnyfield Nursery, attending the annual tradition.

The event has been running for over 20 years and is still as popular as ever - with a host of parents and residents heading down to watch the youngsters enjoy themselves.

Heather Bone, who organises the event along with Daniel Matuszak, said: “The event is something that everyone in the village looks forward to.”

She added her thanks to the Phalps family - a Great Ayton farming family who have had the support of the village to oppose plans to build more than 110 homes on land they farm.

They sponsored the event and gave each child a Creme Egg for taking part.

The races took place a week early this year due to Pancake Day landing on February 17- during the half term holidays.

Mike Heagney introduced the pancake races to Great Ayton when he owned the village supermarket.

And he was once again on hand this year to set up the course for youngsters.

“It is always a great day,” said Heather. “The children have a great time.”
