Mobile Mini: Big growth plans for UK arm with headquarters in Stockton

The UK arm of Arizona-based Mobile Mini - based on Teesside - says it has ambitious plans to grow in the UK retail and education sectors.

The Stockton-headquartered division, Mobile Mini UK Ltd, last year reached turnover of £52m and is now eyeing expansion into the retail and education sectors to complement its client base in the construction industry.

Mobile Mini supplies storage units and portable offices and employs 367 across its Stockton base and 16 depots elsewhere in the country. Its other North-east sites include Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

The firm now says it will invest to grow its UK fleet of more than 37,000 portable accommodation and storage units, in a bid to grow its UK customer base of around 8,500 businesses.

Managing director Chris Morgan has made a number of key appointments in sales, training, marketing and product development to fuel the growth plan.

He said: “2014 was a record year for Mobile Mini, with global sales up 9.6% in 2014 and total revenues up 10.0% year on year here in the UK. It’s been a record year for safety too and we continue to build on our strong reputation in this area.

“The number of sectors we can operate in is growing significantly and we’re particularly focused on growing our presence within the retail and education sectors, as well as maintaining our core industries like construction.”

He added: “Our global objective as a company is to deliver a world class service and lead the field in portable storage and accommodation solutions. As part of this, we’ll continue to invest in growing and refurbishing our fleet, and invest in our people to strengthen skills and increase employee competencies.”

Mobile Mini provides a range of different steel container units which include basic storage space, portable offices, canteens and toilets.

The firm has introduced an energy efficient range which includes timed heaters and lights, double glazed windows and water saving systems.

Mobile Mini Inc was first founded in the US in 1983, selling storage containers to construction companies and manufacturers.

The business grew throughout the 1990s due to a shortage of available cargo storage containers at the time and a UK arm was established following the acquisition of Royal Wolf in 2004.

In the final quarter of 2014 the global group reported revenues of around £80m.

Mobile Mini typically supplies to construction companies, manufacturers, hospitals, schools, distributors, local and national government, hotels, restaurants, and shopping complexes.
