Grade II listed Stockton pub The Masham has been given the green light for a one-storey extension which will lead to three new jobs.
The pub in leafy Hartburn village was seeking permission to replace an existing outdoor seating area to the rear, as well as adding a fire escape on the first floor.
A planning report said previous extension proposals over the years have been refused, but this time officers recommended approval.
Three neighbours have objected to The Masham’s plans and Hartburn ward councillor Ken Lupton raised concerns.
The main area of concern from neighbours related to the potential highway and car parking implications of the development.
Cllr Lupton, also on Stockton Council’s planning committee, said: “I have no doubt at all there will be additional traffic utilising the facility. It is a very narrow road and I feel the concerns of residents to be very genuine.”
Mike Farrell, agent for The Masham and friend of landlord John Eddy, said from over 70 letters sent out to local residents about the plans only three had objected.
“John Eddy moved into the pub 20 years ago with two part time employees, he now employs 19 full and part-time staff,” he said.
“The pub also works with schools and colleges where John takes on apprentices.
“John wants to create a pleasant and safe atmosphere for families to eat.
“If the application is successful John wants to employ three more people.
“We are trying to provide a sustainable and growing pub.”
He added: “The design of the extension will actually reduce noise levels.”
A report to Stockton Council’s planning committee said: “The application is considered to be acceptable in regards to the impacts of car parking and highway safety, the impact on the amenities of neighbouring properties, the Hartburn Conservation Area and the significance of the Grade II listed building.”
Councillor David Wilburn , on the planning committee, said: “I would suggest we support a business that provides a service in the local area and will no doubt be supported by much of the community.”
The extension plans were unanimously approved by the committee.
