Amateur boxing international Louis Cunningham stars for England against Ireland

Ingleby Barwick’s Louis Cunningham formed a winning part of an England amateur boxing team which hit Ireland for six.

The 23-year-old beat Ryan Dervan by a 2-1 judges’ decision as England’s senior men walloped their Irish opponents 6-1 in the annual Basingstoke international.

Now operating at middleweight, the former Wellington ABC boxer defied aggressive Dervan’s early attempts to press him onto the back foot and won the bout behind his jab.

England had lost the last couple of years’ competitions, but ran out convincing winners this time in the charity dinner show.

England’s other winners were southpaw lightweight Jack Daniel, light- welterweight Billy Pickles, welterweight Connor Loftus plus light-heavyweights Ben Jones and Lewie Edmondson.

Cunningham said: “I love boxing for England and really get up for it.

“The lad tried to push me back but I took the centre of the ring and beat him in every department.

“In the end he was the one who was having to step off.”

Cunningham is now boxing for East Durham under coach David Binns and is working as a strength and conditioning coach for Gateshead College.

RYAN Galloway and Dave French will bring Redcar Amateur Boxing Club’s show to a big-hitting conclusion tomorrow night.

The heavyweight pair round off a 14-bout show at the new Redcar Leisure Centre, against opponents from Bilton Hall and the Flat Snout club.

Featherweight Adil Hassan will have revenge in mind when he rematches Lambton Street, Sunderland’s Ryan Daley.

Adil’s brother Akeef is also on a bill which includes a comeback for Jake McBride after three years out and a debut for Sam Jones.

The first bout starts at 8.30pm.
