Great-grandmother dies after being hit by bus on Stockton High Street


A great-grandmother who was hit by a bus in Stockton has died.


Dorothy Bryan, 75, suffered serious injuries including a fractured skull, a bleed on the brain, a broken pelvis and six broken ribs after being hit by a bus on Stockton High Street on December 4 last year.


The accident happened just after 1.30pm outside the British Heart Foundation shop. The Great North Air Ambulance attended the incident alongside ambulance crews and Cleveland Police.

Mrs Bryan was taken to James Cook University Hospital where her condition was described as “critical but stable”.


But today a Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “We’re sorry to report that a woman in her seventies has passed away following a collision with a bus in Stockton High Street on December 4.”


Mrs Bryan died on on February 24.


The accident prompted her son, Robert, to call for the High Street’s recent redesign to be looked at again.


Speaking to The Gazette in December, Mr Bryan said: “Without a careful investigation and an unbiased common sense analogy of the facts that are currently being gathered, we may never know who was really to blame.”


Mr Bryan described his mother as “the most likeable and approachable woman you could ever meet.”

“I’ve never known someone who knows as many people as my mum does, she has been walking around there for about 70 years,” added Mr Bryan, dad to Anthony, 25, Gary, 23, and Emily, 18.


Mrs Bryan’s accident was the third involving a female pedestrian and a bus on Stockton High Street within the space of three months.


Kelly Marie Evis, 28, died in hospital 15 days after being involved in a collision with a bus on September 15.


Hannah Baxter, 32, from Thornaby, sustained multiple injuries after being knocked down by an at the spot known as Maxwell’s Corner on October 21.


On December 12, a fourth pedestrian was involved in an accident with a bus on Stockton High Street.


On that occasion, an elderly man escaped without serious injury and did not require hospital treatment.
