Thomas Daniel can still be a contender despite Superkombat defeat

Thomas Daniel’s trainer said the Middlesbrough kickboxer can hold his head high despite losing his overseas debut in Romania.

Daniel lost a well-matched 85kg clash on the undercard of Superkombat’s fifth anniversary show in Ploiesti to Stefan Szomoru.

Hometown fighter Szomoru took a unanimous decision but Daniel’s Contender Gym trainer Garry Bell said the 26-year-old did himself and Teesside proud.

“It was a big occasion for Thomo on a high profile show,” Bell said.

“His opponent had some of the biggest names in Romanian kickboxing in his corner in the Stoica brothers and Benjamin Adegbuyi, and there was just me and Thomo there from Teesside.

“But Thomo wasn’t fazed at all. He just went out and did his thing.

“I thought he was more active in the second and third rounds and landed the cleaner shots.

“But there’s no complaints from us. He showed what he can do and hopefully he gets an invite back.”

FOUR title fights take top billing on Cleveland Gym’s 14-bout kickboxing show at Low Grange Social Club in Billingham on Saturday.

Two-time world cadet champion Ste Raybould will be fighting for his first senior title - the IKF British featherweight belt - when he takes on Dan Speed from Platinum Gym in Birmingham.

Billingham’s Rob Watson meets Alex Lupascu from G-Force Gym in Gloucester for the English senior light heavyweight IKF title.

Cleveland Gym’s Jay Warren, 16, fights for the IKF British junior featherweight title which teammate Raybould used to hold.

And Francis Conlin battles Scorpio Gym’s Jak Jowers for the IKF Junior English atomweight title.

Tickets are £12 on 07939 130942. The afternoon/early evening show starts at 4pm.
