Severe weather warning: Forecasters issue alert over incoming dense fog on Teesside

Teesside has been given a severe weather warning for fog.

Dense fog is predicted for today and tomorrow - and the public should be aware of the risk of disruption to travel.

A chief forecaster for the Met Office said: “Visibilities below 100 metres are likely in the denser areas of fog.

“The limited insolation (sunlight reaching the earth's surface) available at this time of year, along with light winds, means that the fog will be rather reluctant to clear on Saturday morning.

"But current expectations are that most of the fog will have cleared by the end of the morning - although mist and low cloud is likely to plague some locations into the afternoon.”

The Met Office issues warnings for rain, snow, wind, fog and ice.

Warnings are given a colour depending on a combination of both the likelihood of the event happening and the impact the conditions may have.

This is a yellow warning - meaning ‘be aware’.

Teesside has seen rain today - and it’s predicted for the rest of today along with a maximum temperature of 12C and possible low of 6C.

Tomorrow is predicted to be overcast, with forecasters saying there will be a maximum temperature of 8C and minimum of 7C.

Sunday is expected to be cloudy.

Temperatures for Sunday are expected to be between 8C and 11C.

Boro fans can STILL get their hands on Wigan tickets

Boro fans can still get their hands on tickets for next weekend’s Wigan clash after the club announced they had received an additional allocation.

Tickets for the game only went on sale last Wednesday but the club revealed yesterday that the 4,800 allocation has completely sold out.

However, the club has today added that a small number of additional tickets have been received and are now available to buy.

It is thought that around 200 extra tickets were received.

Boro have been backed by huge numbers on the road all season but the trip to Wigan will be the biggest away following since Aitor Karanka was appointed as Boro boss a year ago.

Boro’s boss and players have praised the away fans for their support on numerous occasions already this year with the vocal fans undoubtedly helping the team rack up 16 points out of a possible 24 on the road, the best away form in the Championship

Ched Evans: Jessica Ennis-Hill Twitter troll rape tweet under investigation by South Yorkshire Police

South Yorkshire Police are investigating a sick rape tweet targeting Olympic star Jessica Ennis-Hill

It came after she told Sheffield United bosses to remove her name from a stand if the club re-sign rapist footballer Ched Evans.

Vile Twitter trolls lashed out at the gold medal winner following her comments after the shamed striker returned to training following his release from a two-and-a-half year jail term.

One tweet, sent from the handle @RickieLambert07 but later deleted, read: "Jessica Ennis-Hill is a stupid c***.

"Saying she will remove her name if Ched Evens (sic) is signed. I hope he rapes her."

The post was roundly condemned by other Twitter users, however its author was unrepentant, citing "freedom of speech" as a defence.

Author and DJ Dave Haslam called the poster "scum," but in response the troll wrote: "Freedom of speech mate, I'll say what I want, when I want!"

Another warped Twitter user going by the handle @CoreyOC21 sent a message direct to Ennis-Hill's own account, which read: "Hope Ched Evans gets you you little slut."

However, Freddie Johnson replied to say: "I'm reporting this to the police.

"Then we'll see if you think tweeting things like this is clever."

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said officers were looking into the tweets.

The threats came after Sheffield-born Ennis-Hill's intervention in the Evans furore yesterday.

The 28-year-old Blades fan issued a statement after it emerged Evans, 25, had resumed training with his former club.

The mum-of-two said: "I believe being a role model to young people is a huge honour and those in positions of influence in communities should respect the role they play in young people's lives and set a good example.

"If Evans was to be re-signed by the club it would completely contradict these beliefs."

Today David Cameron said he "understood" why the Olympic golden girl opposed the striker's return to professional football.

The Prime Minister said: "I quite understand why she's said what she's said and done what's she done."

Yesterday Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg claimed Evans 'could play abroad for a while' - but should not be allowed to train with the Blades.

The Liberal Democrat leader, a Sheffield MP, said if it was his decision he would not have let him return to United.

Speaking on his LBC radio show, he added: "He maybe could play for a club abroad for a while before coming back.

"The point is he played for Sheffield United when the offence took place and when he was convicted, so there is a very particular decision for the club that had him on their books when he committed that offence.

"Of course people need to move on in their lives and of course when you have done your time, you have done your time."

Sheffield United insist no decision has yet been taken on whether to offer Evans a contract.

The Bramall Lane stand was re-named after Ennis-Hill following her heptathlon triumph at London 2012.

Man jailed after stealing Poppy Appeal tin, just hours after being punished at court for another burglary

A callous burglar has been locked up for six months for stealing a Poppy Appeal tin - just hours being punished at court for another burglary.

Wayne Robinson, 34, broke into Acklam Iron and Steelworks Athletic Club on Park Road South, in Middlesbrough, the day after Remembrance Day.

Robinson had been in court on Wednesday morning, and received a community order for a burglary in which he stole booze from the TS1 pub in Linthorpe Road, Middlesbrough.

After leaving court, Robinson went to a probation service appointment and then went on to steal the money meant for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Jailing Robinson at Teesside Magistrates Court yesterday, District Judge Andrew Meachin said: “This was a despicable act, and in many ways six months is not long enough.”

Prosecuting, Paul Power had told the court that the alarm at the social club had gone off at around 1.45pm, and when police arrived a back door had been pulled off the hinges and a bike was outside.

Police found Robinson inside with the charity tin concealed under his arm and arrested him.

Mr Power said: “Many will be appalled by the nature of the crime, especially so close to Remembrance Day and in this especially poignant year.”

Robinson, who lives on Eden Road, Grove Hill, Middlesbrough, just yards from the club, had pleaded guilty to burglary at the hearing.

Mitigating, Rachel Dyson said that repeat offender Robinson often found it difficult to find money when he was released from prison.

She said: “He has a long record for being before the courts, for other burglaries and other matters, and he tends to receive the short, sharp shock of custody which he says does nothing to help his underlying problems.

“He only had £49 when he got out of prison last time.”

Ms Dyson said Robinson “was completely desperate” when he took the tin, and he had been speaking to the DWP about his benefits.

Pleading for a suspended sentence, she continued: “He recognises the difficult position he is in. Given the nature of the offence, even with his aggravating features, a prison sentence this court could give would not be enough for him to get on any rehabilitation course.”

But District Judge Meachin said to Robinson: “The only credit you are getting is that I am not sending you to Crown Court, because you would have got an even longer sentence there.”
