A lorry leaving an abattoir caused chaos in an East Cleveland village after it broke down half way into the road.
The lorry was trying to leave the Banaras Halal Meats (BHM) slaughterhouse in Boosbeck yesterday afternoon when it stopped in the road.
Villagers and then police had to help traffic pass the stranded lorry which, residents claim, had animal byproducts dripping from it onto the road. Sawdust was later spread beneath the vehicle to cover over any leakage.
The lorry broke down at about 2.30pm, but efforts to restart were ongoing more than two hours later.
And there was more traffic mayhem when a lorry bringing sheep into the abattoir found its way blocked by the departing truck. After several attempts, it eventually inched its way into the yard.
School buses had to turn around and were diverted through Margrove Park as the lorry resolutely refused to budge.
Residents looked on as police continued to control the traffic and effiorts to restart the broken down vehicle continued.
Among those watching was Nev Brown, who has campaigned fiercely against the abattoir opening.
The £3m slaughterhouse has faced major opposition from locals after plans were unveiled in 2011 to revive the dormant facility. Despite a two-year court battle, the site began operating last February.
Mr Brown said: “It’s shocking that this sort of thing can happen. This situation is getting out of control now.
“We’ve been through hell in this village and this proves our point - it’s the wrong place for it.
“I’ve been taking pictures and video of this and will be sending it off to the council’s highways and planning departments.”
Villager Nick Brown claimed that when the lorry first stalled, it leaked “blood and gore” onto the road.
“It absolutely stank,” he said.
“Local people had to direct the traffic before the police arrived.”
No-one from BHM was available for comment, although the company has previously said its “substantial investment” in Boosbeck would result in “a first-class facility.”
