Jelle isn’t wobbling!
Belgian striker Vossen scored in Boro’s nerve-settling 3-0 midweek mauling of Millwall.
And while he insists that while some supporters may have got the jitters over recent results, the squad have never wavered in their belief.
“We knew against Millwall we had to give a good performance, get a good result, score some good goals and give people some confidence,” he said.
“We knew that some people were already hesitating about our qualities and maybe thought we couldn’t handle the pressure or maybe we do not have the quality to fight for the first position.
“But I think we have showed many times we have a good team with a lot of good qualities and playing good football.
“The players do not have any nerves or any doubts over the qualities we have,” he insisted.
“We have shown in almost every game this season what a good team we are and that we know how to play football.
“We are a good side with good qualities and that cannot disappear in one or two weeks.
“Of course we were disappointed with the results we got in the last weeks - against Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday - but I can tell you that never touched our confidence.
“We did not have any hesitation over our quality, we didn’t have any doubts about the strength of the squad.
“But we knew we had to show people, the supporters ,that we could still win games and we did that against Millwall as we got all three of the points and scored three good goals.”
Despite their stutter Boro have reached the summit as a string of opponents have had wobbles of their own.
Middlesbrough's Jelle Vossen and Middlesbrough's Patrick Bamford celebrate
Promotion rivals Derby, Bournemouth, Brentford, Ipswich and Norwich have all dropped points in games they were expected to win.
“It is a very tough league and every team can beat everyone else,” said Vossen. “Every week there is surprise result.
“That is why you need to show mental strength to stay on track for your ambition.
“Other teams are having a ‘wobble’ also.
“It is a tough stage of the season when you need experience and confidence and we have that in our group.
“It is very tight. We are top of the league and now it us up to us to stay there so we must keep going and win as many games as possible.
“It is better to be in our position than to be fourth of fifth and have to catch up.
“But there is still a long way to go. We see every week teams drop points around us but we can’t rely on that.
“We have to look at only our own games and make sure we can get points from them and the table will look after itself.
“But they are all big games now with a lot of pressure.
“We need all our qualities now to win and it isn’t easy as all the other team want the same thing and it can change so very fast.
“I think we have the strength to handle the pressure well, keep everyone in same direction and keep out minds on our job and our own games.”
