A second road in Middlesbrough is set to be named in honour of a fallen Teesside soldier.
Charlie Wood Way will be created in memory of Warrant Officer Class 2 Charlie Wood who was killed in Afghanistan in 2010.
The news comes after Corporal Roberts Close was unveiled in Hemlington in memory of 32-year-old Corporal Andrew Roberts who died in 2012.
And poignantly Charlie and Andrew were friends who had previously served together in a war zone.
Charlie, 34, a bomb disposal expert from Middlesbrough, was killed on December 28, 2010, in a blast from an improvised explosive device.
Charlie Wood Way will sit just off Union Street in Gresham where properties are being developed by housing group Thirteen.
Charlie’s mum Barbara said she was “so proud” that her son is being honoured in his home town.
She said: “He lived in Middlesbrough all of his life - he was brought up just round the corner so it’s a perfect place.
“The town meant so much to him and he would be ecstatic if he knew this was happening.
“He always wanted to be famous and now he has a road named after him. It’s lovely.”
Charlie also left wife Heather who described her husband as having “a heart of gold”.
A Middlesbrough Council spokesman confirmed that the street name has been approved with Royal Mail and emergency services.
A date for the street name to be unveiled has yet to be fixed.
Charlie joined the Army in 1994 and also served in Iraq and Bosnia.
He had also raised thousands of pounds for forces charities - as well as going the extra mile to look after his men.
His job in the army was undoubtedly one of the most dangerous and his colleagues said he always put other soldiers first.
When he died, Tony Mowbray, Boro boss at the time, paid tribute saying it was a “very sad day”.
He added: “We all here at the football club are very proud of Charlie Wood and what he did for his men, for his county and for his town,” he said.
On Sunday Corporal Roberts Close was officially unveiled in Hemlington.
Andrew’s family and friends, including his parents, Stephen, 59, and Pauline, 63, attended the unveiling which was done his nieces and nephews.
The road is situated in Hemlington between Stainton Way and Hemlington Hall Academy - Andrew’s former primary school.
Charlie and Andrew served together in Bosnia in 2007 and shared a mutual love of Middlesbrough Football Club.
They were both part of 23 Pioneer Regiment, The Royal Logistic Corps, based in Bicester, Oxfordshire.
