Thornaby school drawing up policies after setting up own parliament

Primary school pupils are drawing up policies after setting up their own parliament.

Students at Bader Primary School in Thornaby were invited to make a presentation to their fellow pupils before a secret ballot was made to elect a cabinet.

Headteacher Simon Feasey said they decided to set up the parliament after the government placed an emphasis on schools promoting fundamental British values.

“All the children down to year two were invited to argue why they would make a good minister,” he said.

“They spoke in front of the whole school, encouraging the pupils to elect them on what they said, forgetting their age or gender.

“We are looking at how it all works, not just parliament itself but awareness and understanding of the rule of law and how you get things done in a democracy.”

Ciaran Ayre from year six was elected Prime Minister and Michael Flynn from year four was chosen as his deputy. There were also six ministers and four junior minister chosen by the youngsters.

It is now hoped the cabinet will get the chance to view Parliament in London after receiving an invitation from Stockton South MP James Wharton who dropped by to field questions about his role.
