Award-winning dangerous goods specialist targets North-east growth

Evolution Forwarding is targeting growth closer to home after winning a major award for its achievements overseas

An award-winning dangerous goods specialist is targeting growth in the North-east after winning a major award for its achievements overseas.

Teesside firm Evolution Forwarding topped the Supporting Export category at the recent North East Exporters’ Awards after achieving a ten-fold increase in export turnover to almost £750,000 in two years.

It was a second awards success for the Middlesbrough-based business, which provides a speedy cargo service for dangerous goods and earlier this year picked up the Tees Valley Best New Business gong.

While the company has increased export sales rapidly, from 40% to 90% of overall turnover in the past three years, fewer than 6% of the businesses it deals with are based on Teesside.

Now, though, the firm is focused on building greater market share locally by building on its North-east customer base, which includes Stockton fire protection specialist Hawkes Fire and Middlesbrough-based global tank transportation firm Bulkhaul.

Evolution MD Terry Goldspink said: “It’s ironic that we have won a prestigious award for supporting our region’s exporters when, in truth, the majority of businesses we support are actually based outside the region.

“Our biggest disappointment is that we’re not servicing more North-east clients to the extent that we know we could.

“We are in a prime position to help exporters and importers with their logistics for chemicals, or indeed any other dangerous goods, so our target for the next 12 months is to increase our customer base throughout the North-east.”

Mr Goldspink launched Evolution with his wife Amanda three years ago after gaining 20 years’ experience in the forwarding industry. Since then the company has made its mark in overseas markets by winning a clutch of contracts.

Recently the firm extended its partnership agreement with Shanghai Milky Way International Chemical Logistics Group, a Chinese freight forwarder and logistics business. The six-figure deal will see Evolution continue to handle all of Shanghai Milky Way’s shipments into the UK and Ireland for the next three years.

The company also expects to recruit two more dangerous goods specialists in the next 12 months.

Work starts on Hartlepool Regeneration Masterplan

The company appointed to help deliver a regeneration blueprint for Hartlepool will meet up with council bosses today

The company appointed to help deliver a new regeneration blueprint for Hartlepool will meet with council chiefs today.

Commercial property firm GVA was appointed recently by Hartlepool Council to work on the Hartlepool Regeneration Masterplan, covering the town’s marina and waterfront.

The masterplan forms part of the Hartlepool Vision unveiled by Hartlepool Council earlier this year which aims to revitalise the centre of Hartlepool, spark the town’s wider regeneration and lay the foundations for its future prosperity.

The master planning of the waterfront and surrounding area will not only set out in detail what can be delivered, but also show where and how this can be achieved.

It aims to increase Hartlepool’s profile as a major leisure and visitor destination and unlock opportunities for the economic growth of the town.

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, leader of Hartlepool Council, said: “GVA has a wealth of experience in delivering masterplans and I am sure they will prove to be an excellent appointment.

“We know that Hartlepool has lots of assets but there is also so much more potential to make the town a better place to live, work and visit.”

He added: “Our aim is to create major new retail and leisure facilities, increase the town’s profile as a visitor destination, a centre for advanced manufacturing and produce much-needed job opportunities for the town and the masterplan will help to achieve this.”

Councillor Akers-Belcher said that one of the first steps would be to seek local people’s views on what they would like to see in the masterplan and consultation will take place over the summer months.

Richard Newsome, an associate in GVA’s Newcastle office, said: “Hartlepool has many strengths and it has achieved significant regeneration successes over the years, but the masterplan heralds the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the town. “Our aim is to help the council and the town realise its aspirations and transform a vision behind the masterplan into reality.”

Following consultation and further work by GVA, the first draft of the masterplan is expected to be completed towards the end of 2014.

Morning news headlines: Boris Johnson - Tony Blair 'mad' over Iraq, Hague urges hitch-hikers' release

TONY BLAIR ’MAD’ OVER IRAQ: JOHNSON

Tony Blair’s “unhinged” attempt to rewrite history is undermining arguments for Western intervention in Iraq, Boris Johnson has claimed, in an extraordinary personal attack on the former prime minister.

Mr Blair took to the media to make the case for a tough response to the extremist insurgency in Iraq - insisting it was caused by a failure to deal with the Syria crisis, not the 2003 US-led invasion.

His intervention was met with widespread criticism from Labour figures and others as extremists posted pictures apparently showing the massacre of dozens of Iraqi soldiers by jihadist fighters.

HAGUE URGES HITCH-HIKERS’ RELEASE

William Hague has called for action to secure the release of three abducted hitch-hikers as Israel arrested dozens of Palestinians during the hunt for the youths.

The Foreign Secretary condemned the kidnapping in the West Bank, which Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu blamed on Hamas, saying he held the Palestinian Authority responsible for the disappearance.

Palestinians reject his claim and insist the trio went missing on Thursday in an area under Israeli control.

CLEGG TO UNVEIL ELECTION DETAILS

Nick Clegg will unveil further details of the Liberal Democrats’ pitch to voters at next year’s general election as he seeks to persuade voters it offers a “distinct” programme.

The Deputy Prime Minister will draw more dividing lines with the Tories on education - days after insisting all schools should have qualified teachers and follow a core curriculum.

Aides said Mr Clegg was determined to show voters his party would not resort to an “insipid” manifesto to leave the door open to remaining in power with either of the main parties.

McCANNS IN COURT OVER BOOK ’LIBEL’

Kate and Gerry McCann will appear in a Portuguese court today to deliver personal statements on how accusations in a former police chief’s book have affected them.

The couple have been given permission to speak at the trial of Goncalo Amaral, who they are suing for libel over the claims he made in his book The Truth Of The Lie.

Mr and Mrs McCann were originally told they could not make statements to the long-running trial, but the decision was overturned after an appeal by their lawyer.

FORCED MARRIAGE CRACKDOWN HAILED

Forced marriage is “a tragedy for each and every victim”, Home Secretary Theresa May said as a new law outlawing the practice came into effect.

From today forcing someone into marriage in England and Wales will carry a maximum seven-year jail sentence under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

The Government hopes the law change, with also criminalises forcing a British national into marriage outside the UK, will protect thousands of potential victims.

DON’T WASH RAW CHICKEN, COOKS URGED

Health experts have urged people to stop washing chicken before they cook it to avoid food poisoning.

More than two-fifths of cooks say that they wash chicken as part of their food preparations, but the Food Standards Agency has issued a call to the public to stop the practice.

The FSA said that it can spread a type of bacteria around the kitchen through the splashing of water droplets.

TORIES’ STANCE ON UNIONS ’PETTY’

Liberal Democrat ministers are battling what they regard as a Tory attack on “the very principle of trade unions” by refusing to scrap a system of collecting subscriptions from salaries.

Paymaster General Francis Maude has asked all Whitehall departments to consider ending the long-standing “check off” system.

But Lib Dem cabinet ministers have refused to implement the change in departments they head, and junior colleagues are fighting the proposals elsewhere, a senior party source said.

NURSES ATTACK NHS CHIEFS’ PAY RISES

NHS bosses are being handed pay rises of more than £5,000 and bonuses of tens of thousands of pounds while front-line staff are worried about how they will pay their bills, leading nurses have said.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) said pay for NHS executive directors has increased by an average of 6.1% over the last two years while nurses, midwives and health visitors have only seen a 1.6% rise in earnings.

Half of NHS trusts have awarded a salary increase of at least £5,000 to one or more executive directors, according to freedom of information responses from 126 NHS trusts in England.

BRITON FATALLY STABBED IN BARBARDOS

A British man has been stabbed to death on the Caribbean island of Barbados, it was reported today.

The victim, who has not been named, was stabbed in the chest early yesterday morning, according to the newspaper Barbados Today.

He was said to have been involved in an altercation with a local man in St Lawrence Gap, Christ Church, in the south-west of the island, a lively tourist area.

GARTER CEREMONY FOR ROYAL FAMILY

The Queen will be joined by members of the Royal Family for the annual Order of the Garter service today.

Hundreds of spectators will be treated to the sight of Garter Knights walking through the grounds of Windsor Castle wearing their lavish blue velvet robes and black velvet hats with white plumes.

The Queen, Duke of Edinburgh, Prince of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be among the royal party at the ceremony in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Dad and son in dramatic Redcar sea rescue thank RNLI crew for saving their lives

Neil Westmorland and son Daniel saved by off-duty RNLI crewman Cameron Bond when they were thrown from their boat while fishing off the Redcar coast

A father and son who survived for 40 minutes in the sea after being thrown from their fishing boat say they owe their lives to lifeboat crewmen.

Neil Westmorland and his son Daniel were thrown from their boat, the Ann West, while fishing three miles off the coast of Redcar after a freak engine accident on Saturday.

But they were saved by off-duty RNLI crewman Cameron Bond who responded to a Mayday call - after their boat, which was circling near them for 40 minutes, ran out of petrol and Daniel, 27, was able to get back on board.

Neil, 53, said: “I thought that we were going to die. If it wasn’t for the RNLI, we wouldn’t be here today to tell the story. It was terrifying. They deserve so much credit for what they did.”

Neil and Daniel, of Darlington, were three miles offshore when their boat’s outboard engine - which was being used for the first time after Neil replaced the old one two months ago - broke down.

As they were changing into waders to gut their catch, neither had on a lifejacket. And while they attempted to fix the engine, it restarted - in gear and set to full speed - immediately hurling both men into the sea.

Neil said: “I saw Daniel go straight over and I cartwheeled off into the water. I’m not a very good swimmer, so I didn’t know how long I could last. I just tried to do a doggy paddle, and when I got tired just kick my legs to keep afloat.

“We got split up and that was the worst part. I thought my son might have drowned.

“But then I heard his voice shout and that spurred me on to keep going.”

The fishing boat circled in front of the two men for 40 minutes until it ran out of fuel and Daniel was able to climb back in to send out a Mayday distress call at around 12.30pm.

Dad-of-three Neil had been carried nearly a quarter of a mile away by the tide.

But things could have been worse, said Neil, who works in property maintenance.

“We sometimes go out with a friend who is the same age as me. If there’d been three of us we’d have been done for I think,” he said.

“We’d set off from Redcar to Staithes on Saturday morning, but when we got there we realised we’d forgotten our tackle box. We came back to Redcar to get that before going back out. If we hadn’t, there’d have been more petrol in the engine and Daniel would never have got back on board.”

While the Redcar RNLI lifeboat was tasked after the Mayday, a nearby fishing boat, Nimrod II, also responded - with RNLI volunteer Cameron Bond and his son Jordan on board.

Cameron found Neil in the water, and said: “When we pulled the man from the sea he was shaking violently and he couldn’t speak.

“I knew from my RNLI training that I had to get the guy back to the beach as fast as I could so the crew from the lifeboat station could give him first aid.”

The lifeboat crew then found Daniel, a web developer, on the boat and after first aid the pair were taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by ambulance.

Luckily, the father and son left hospital just hours later with no serious injuries.

Neil, who has fished from Redcar for seven years, said: “I can’t say thank you enough to the RNLI, Coastwatch in Redcar, and all the ambulance and hospital staff.

“We know how lucky we are.”

Dave Cocks from Redcar RNLI, said: “The two men have had an extremely lucky escape.

“It was extremely fortunate that one of our own lifeboat crew members was at sea fishing when the Mayday went out.

“He was quickly on scene to rescue the man from the water, otherwise it could have been tragic.”
