Cleveland Police car collides with taxi while travelling to another road traffic accident

A police car was involved in a collision with a taxi - while travelling to another road traffic accident.

An armed response vehicle was travelling on the A689 near Greatham towards Wynyard when it was involved in the collision at around 1.45am this morning, Friday November 7.

The 46-year-old male driver of the taxi is currently being treated at James Cook University Hospital for head injuries, which have been described as non-life threatening.

A 50-year-old male passenger travelling in the taxi was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees with a leg injury but has since left hospital.

A male police officer who was travelling in the armed response vehicle suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the University Hospital of North Tees.

He was treated and released.

The male driver of the police vehicle was uninjured.

Cleveland Police have confirmed that a mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, as is routine with these kinds of incidents.

The armed response vehicle was tasked to deal with the other accident as it was the closest police vehicle to the scene.

Any witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.

Woman given community order for £9,600 benefit fraud while living with working husband

A benefit fraudster who took more than £9,600 in benefits while living with a working husband has been given a community order.

Married woman Jade Heppenstall, 32, claimed income support and council tax benefit as a lone mum-of-two.

Evidence emerged that she was living with a working husband without telling the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Prosecutor Joanne Hesse said Heppenstall was overpaid £9,638 over a 10-month period.

She had since repaid £3,037 to the government, Teesside Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday.

Heppenstall, of Sandringham Road, Park End, Middlesbrough, admitted two charges of fraud by false representation and one of failing to disclose information to the DWP.

District Judge Kristina Harrison gave her a community order with a year’s supervision and ordered her to pay £85 costs and a £60 surcharge.

Douglas Alexander defends Ed Miliband's leadership during Middlesbrough Question Time

One of the Labour Party’s most senior figures backed Ed Miliband’s leadership while in Middlesbrough last night - but warned the party must ‘pull together’ to win next year's election.

Douglas Alexander MP, who is in charge of Labour’s General Election strategy, was on the Question Time panel at the Town Hall.

Speaking on the BBC 1 programme, Mr Alexander said: “[Ed Miliband] has got challenges, but all of us have got challenges in every political party.

“Every one of us in the Labour Party has to reflect the reality that divided parties lose elections and we have got a profound responsibility to the people who want to get away from the mistakes, the errors, the sheer injustice of this coalition government to pull together, to offer credible change in the face of these tough economic times, and that’s exactly what we plan to do.”

Two of the most senior members of Ed Miliband’s shadow cabinet have angrily denied claims they were in secret negotiations over what to do if the Labour Party leader quits.

Yvette Cooper and Andy Burnham - among the leading candidates to take over in the event of a vacancy - were reported by The Times to have struck a “non-aggression pact”.

Both denied the suggestion.

The claim came after Mr Miliband was forced publicly to deny reports that several backbenchers had demanded his resignation amid concerns over the Opposition’s prospects of victory at next year’s general election.

Former cabinet minister David Blunkett sought to calm the atmosphere, calling for an end to “this bout of political insanity”.

But Lord Soley, who as an MP chaired the parliamentary party, issued a bleak vision of the party’s general election prospects and suggested Mr Miliband should take a less prominent role as he was not seen by voters as a “charismatic potential prime minister”.

A poll, by YouGov for LBC radio, found that nearly half (49%) of people surveyed believed Labour’s chances of returning to power would be improved if Mr Miliband was replaced.

Joining Mr Alexander on the panel were former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy, Conservative MP Brandon Lewis, journalist Melanie Phillips and comedian Matt Forde.
