Police intervene after Facebook page names girl, 15, responsible for filmed street attack

29 Jan 2014 06:00

Attacker - who was later convicted of an assault which was filmed and shared on social media - can not be named for legal reasons

A Facebook comment naming a teenage girl who was responsible for a violent street attack on another girl has been removed after police intervened.

As previously reported, the 15-year-old from Stockton was filmed punching and kicking another girl in the face.

The distressing footage was then circulated on social media sites and was handed in to police.

The attacker can’t be named for legal reasons - and wasn’t identified in the Gazette’s coverage of the case.

But her identity was revealed by someone who posted it on Facebook.

It was then brought to the attention of Cleveland Police.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “We were made aware that a juvenile had been named in a comment on a Facebook page and we requested that the comment be removed. It was deleted a short time later.”

Police had been alerted to the crime by the 15-year-old victim on October 15, following the attack near Mill Lane Primary School on Wellington Street, Stockton.

The victim was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees where she received treatment and was later discharged.

Her attacker was issued with a court summons and appeared at Teesside Youth Court charged with assault.

She was given a 10-month referral order and was also ordered to pay £200 costs.

The footage of the attack shows the victim lying on the ground being punched and kicked in the face.

Others could also be seen standing around jeering and filming the attack.

Comments relating to the video, which appeared on Facebook and Twitter, showed people’s shock and disgust at the filmed attack.

One girl said: “That is vile but the worst people are the ones who stood there and done nothing.”

Cleveland Police said it was a nasty attack on a young girl made particularly distressing because it was filmed and the footage then uploaded on to social media sites.

The footage was subsequently used in evidence which helped to secure a successful conviction, with police saying: “Let this be a warning to those who choose to put images on social media in the future.”

Aitor Karanka admits Rhys Williams could miss World Cup after suspected Achilles rupture

Aitor Karanka has admitted Rhys Williams could well miss miss the World Cup after suffering a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon injury in Boro's goalless draw with Wigan

Boro boss Aitor Karanka Boro boss Aitor Karanka

Aitor Karanka admits Rhys Williams could well miss miss the World Cup after suffering a suspected ruptured Achilles tendon injury in Boro's goalless draw with Wigan.

The Australia international slumped to the turf in first-half stoppage time and had to be stretchered off.

On his way off the pitch, the club doctor had to administer oxygen and Karanka confirmed the injury was serious.

If, as feared, Williams isn't able to travel to Brazil for this summer's World Cup, it will be the second time he'll have missed the tournament due to an injury.

In 2010, he was unable to take part in Australia's World Cup campaign in South Africa due to a pelvic problem.

“Rhys has damaged his Achilles but we don't know how serious it is,” said Karanka.

“It will be a huge blow if he can't go to the World Cup, especially as it happened once before.

“It's the pinnacle of every player's career and to miss out twice is terrible bad luck, I really feel for him.

“Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery and we will give him our maximum support.

“Naturally, he was very upset when he came off the pitch,” added the Boro head coach, who revealed that the club were weighing up several offers for the versatile 25-year-old.

The injury also means Seb Hines' proposed loan move to Birmingham City won't go through.

Karanka is still confident that he will be able to bring in a striker and a playmaker before the transfer window closes on Friday night.

And, after Boro failed to score for the second successive match, it's clear the team needs help up front if they are to push for promotion.

Targets include Jelle Vossen, Danny Graham, Kevin Doyle and Luciano Becchio.

Williams' injury summed up what was a miserable night for Boro, who struggled to break down a resilient Wigan outfit.

The match featured a stunning late save from Shay Given, who showed outstanding reactions to palm away a deflected shot from Stephen Crainey.

The point did't do either side's promotion hopes much good but at least Boro extended their unbeaten run at the Riverside to four successive Championship games.

The clean-sheet was also Boro's fourth in a row on home soil in the league.

Karanka said: “It was a fair scoreline. We didn't create enough chances to win the game.

“I didn't like the way we played in the first half but we were better in the second half.

“It's disappointing not to win but at least we didn't lose. That's crucial, if you don't win then you've got to avoid defeat.

“And it was also good that we kept a clean sheet, we defended well on the night.”

BORO ground out a low thriklls goalless draw in a match that was far from a Riverside classic.

They had the best of the few chances in a lack-lustre game but still had Shay Given to thank for a one handed save in the second half as they earned a solid point against in-form Wigan and clocked up a fourth successive clean sheet at home for the first time in a decade.

Boro made two changes as Marvin Emnes returned in place of Albert Adomah and Curtis Main started up front in place of Lukas Jutkiewicz just hours after he sealed his loan exit to Bolton.

There was a scrappy start with half chances at both ends as first Wigan's Fortune then Boro's Ledesma curled tentative efforts well wide.

Wigan showed first on seven minutes as Watson curled to back post where McCann's effort was charged down.

Then they went close again on eight minutes as Powell pulled it back to the edge of the box for McCann to stab in a shot that clipped unsuspecting George Friend on the side of the head and spun out for a corner.

Boro's first real chance came on 14 minutes as Mustapha Carayol sent Emnes dancing down the inside left channel and into the box but when he squared inside into the path of Main the last defender Boyce stretched to cut it out.

Then on 18 minutes they won a free-kick 25 yards out to the right of the box but Emmanuel Ledesma's well struck waist high effort brought a good save at the near post.

Wigan pressed again on 21 minutes as a quick slotted pass by Powell sent Fortune surging into the Boro box but alert Ayala tracked his run and put in a well timed tackle as the striker cut inside to find an angle for the shot.

The visitors then had a good spell of patient possession in the Boro half but whenever they tried to pick a way into the box the ball was dealt with in no-nonsense fashion.

But Boro almost carved out the opener on 28 minutes as Grant Leadbitter pushed out to Friend on the left and he skipped past a challenge then sent Carayol scything in to the edge of the box to send a low shot whistling wide.

And a minute later a touch from Emnes sent Main surging forward to slam a low shot straight at the keeper.

Wigan almost broke through as Beausejour barged through a sliding tackle by Jozsef Varga down by the corner flag but his hopeful angled shot was easily gathered by Shay Given.

Boro went close again on 33 minutes as persistent Main won a corner and when Ledesma dipped it in, Ayala flicked on to the back stick where Carayol flew in to a diving header that was just turned wide off defender Perch.

The crowd were in uproar on 42 minutes as Emnes broke clear but was sent sprawling by Crainey but although the linesman flagged for a foul the referee waved play on and indicated the defender had got the ball.

Boro almost carved through on the stroke of half-time as a five man move and a sublime Ledesma ball found Emnes on the edge of the box but a defender arrived with a tackle as he turned onto the angle for the shot.

Just before the whistle Rhys Williams went down heavily after turning to chase and had to be stretchered off with what looked like an Achilles tendon injury and Ben Gibson came on in his place.

HALF-TIME: BORO 0 WIGAN 0

Varga was booked on 47 minutes for a pull on Beausejour.

Boro showed first as Carayol wriggled down the left and crossed to the near post where a defender just nipped in before it arrived for Main.

Wigan's Perch was booked on 54 minutes after hacking Carayol down as he streaked down the left of the box giving Boro a dangerous free-kick.

But it was wasted as Leadbitter's weak effort slammed straight into the wall and then he hooked the rebound high and wide to jeers from the crowd.

Wigan threatened on 56 minutes as after a good spell of pressure Powell touched on for Fortune to drill in a stinging 20 yard shot that was charged down by Ayala.

Boro won another free-kick and Wigan picked up another yellow card on 57 minutes as Watson fouled Emnes and this time when Ledesma whipped it in Perch headed clear.

On 59 minutes Albert Adomah came on for Emnes and Wigan put on McClean and McArthur for Fortune and Watson.

Boro missed a glorious chance to grab the opener on 64 minutes as Carayol broke down the left and pushed a neat ball into the box for Ledesma to dart towards the near post then cut back for Main but he slipped slightly as he swung at it and scooped over from eight yards out.

Then they turned the screw on 68 minutes as after a good spell of pressure Varga wriggled down the right to the byline but when he cut the ball back it someone evaded all his team-mates in the box then when Leadbitter sprayed the loose ball quickly down the left Carayol cut in to crack in a low shot that cannoned back off the shins of Perch.

Wigan broke out and threatened as McClean darted forward but fired over from 20 yards.

Boro went close as Ledesma wriggled in from the right then squared for Carayol on the edge of the box but although his first touch took him past his marker his second was poor and the ball ran away.

But Wigan could have snatched the lead on 76 minutes as a quick break found Crainey 20 yards out and he smashed in a stinging shot that took a slight deflection but it couldn't fool Given who made a superb one handed reflex save.

Then they pressed again as Powell stole in front of Ben Gibson onto a cross to power a header over the bar.

Kei Kamara came on for Carayol on 83 minutes and two minutes later Wigan put on Maynard for Powell.

On 87 minutes Ledesma was booked for a foul on McClean.

Boro survived a late scare as a McClean cross bounced through the box towards Maynard but Varga hoofed it away for a corner in a safety first clearance.

Serious crash closes the A19 at Stokesley, North Yorkshire

28 Jan 2014 21:32

Emergency services are dealing with a serious crash on the A19 after a single vehicle left the road on the A172 off-slip to Stokesley and overturned

Police tape Police tape

A serious road accident closed the A19 tonight.

Emergency services were called at 7.30pm after a single vehicle left the road on the A172 off-slip to Stokesley and overturned.

The road was closed for several hours.

Police were initially unable to give details of any casualties or state whether the crash had been fatal.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police were called at around 7.30pm after a single vehicle left the road on the A172 off-slip to Stokesley and overturned.”

The road was closed with diversions in place at the junction with the A684 near Osmotherley.

The route was expected to remain closed in both directions for several hours after the incident.

One driver affected by the closure said: “You couldn’t see anything from where they had closed the road.

“But there were a lot of police cars where it was closed so you could tell it was something serious.”

The crash is the second serious smash on the same stretch of A19 in less than a year.

Last February a man died after being involved in a collision with two lorries.

Roy Mackenzie, 35, from Thirsk, suffered fatal injuries after his Ford Focus was involved in a collision with a lorry near Northallerton.

Mr Mackenzie, from Thirsk, then suffered serious head injuries in another collision with an HGV just 10 minutes later as he was standing on the road close to the junction for Over Silton, also on the southbound carriageway.

And in December 2011, Romanian Alexandru Braninschi, 24, died after a crash on the A19 near to Mount Grace Priory, close to the A172 Stokesley turn-off.

Van driver Susan Noble was later jailed for three years for her role in the fatal accident.

It emerged she had been texting at 70mph when she hit the man who was standing next to a broken down car.

Anyone who witnessed the crash last night is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on non-emergency number 101, select option 1 and pass information to the Force Control Room.

Lukas Jutkiewicz completes loan switch to Bolton Wanderers

28 Jan 2014 16:39

Striker is expected to be included in Dougie Freedman's squad for tonight's Championship fixture at QPR

Lukas Jutkiewicz has completed his loan switch to Bolton.

The 24-year-old striker is expected to be included in Dougie Freedman's squad for tonight's Championship fixture at QPR.

Jutkiewicz has struggled to find the net this season, scoring just one goal in the Championship.

Blackburn tried to sign him in the November emergency loan window but Aitor Karanka was reluctant to let him leave until he'd had a good look at him.

The head coach, who has tended to rotate Jutkiewicz and Curtis Main in the lone-striker role, is in the market for a new front man as well as a playmaker before the January window closes at midnight on Friday.

Bolton sold David Ngog to Swansea yesterday, freeing up space in his budget to sign Jutkiewicz, who will stay with the Trotters until the end of the season when he's expected to pen a permanent deal.

Karanka revealed yesterday that he told the striker that it was up to him whether he wanted to move to the Reebok Stadium.

He said: “I was speaking to Lukas on Sunday and I said to him that if he wants to go he needs to take the right decision for him.

“I said to him maybe he needs a change of surroundings, that might improve his confidence levels.

Redcar Lifeboat rescued twice as many people last year than in 2012

28 Jan 2014 15:30

The town’s lifeboats were launched 50 times and rescued 60 people in 2013

Redcar lifeboats Redcar lifeboats

Nearly twice as many people were rescued by Redcar's lifeboat crews last year than in 2012, new figures reveal.

The town’s lifeboats were launched 50 times and rescued 60 people last year, compared to 36 launches and 31 people rescued in 2012.

And the number of call-outs during the long, hot summer accounted for much of the increase.

Statistics issued today show there were 1,028 rescue launches from the charity’s 33 lifeboat stations in the north of England, with 1,027 people rescued.

RNLI lifeguards on 29 beaches in the north - including Redcar and Saltburn - responded to 2,252 incidents and helped 2,803 people.

The busiest lifeboat station in the north was Sunderland, with 89 launches and 84 rescues. Whitby launched 53 times with 79 rescues, while Hartlepool saw 52 launches, rescuing 89 people.

At Redcar, the combination of hot weather and the new look seafront saw the busiest summer for the town’s lifeboat station since it opened in 1802.

The mix of callouts ranged from divers in distress to 14 people cut off by the tide at Huntcliff, including a mum and her children from Harrogate who found themselves trapped on August 7.

And one of the most unusual callouts didn’t even involve either of the station’s boats going to sea because the collision between fishing boats Mizpah and the Samantha on August 9 happened just 50 yards from shore, allowing lifeboat crew to wade out and help in the rescue.

The station’s deputy launching authority, Dave Cocks, said: “We had the full gambit of callouts, from sinking boats and children on inflatables to people cut off by the tide and missing kids.

“And as usual, we had our share of people cut off at Huntcliff, including a couple who refused to be rescued because they had their picnic with them, although most tend to be from outside the area.

“But the fact we’ve saved 60 people proves the worth of having lifeboats at Redcar.

“Our volunteer crew members always respond to the cause and should be proud of everything they’ve achieved in the past 12 months.”

Your Daily Muslim: Naser Jason Abdo

Naser Jason Abdo

Naser Jason Abdo

Naser Jason Abdo was born in the US in 1990 to a Palestinian (presumably Muslim) father and a Christian mother. He was raised in a non-religious environment and got to learn about both his parents’ faiths, though he didn’t express devotion of his own until sometime after he turned 17, when he chose the wrong parent’s religion. He began to study and learn more about Islam, and when he hadn’t gotten a job around a year after his high school graduation, he enlisted in the US Army.

When Abdo was selected for deployment to Afghanistan in 2010, he filed as a conscientious objector. His discharge was approved, but little did he know that his government-issued property would be searched as part of his departure – including his hard drive. Of course, there was child porn on the Muslim’s computer (aside from the Qur’an.) The Army tried to have him court-martialed, and Abdo denied the charges. That case apparently never really went forward.

A month or so later, he was interviewed by al Jazeera regarding the war in Afghanistan. He said, “I don’t believe I can involve myself in an army that wages war against Muslims. I don’t believe I could sleep at night if I take part, in any way, in the killing of a Muslim.” By that statement, he basically came out about being a jihadist. What’s the problem with killing militant jihadists, unless you’re aligned with them? Jihadists harm not only international troops in Afghanistan, they routinely target Afghan civilians going about their daily lives. I understand not wanting to kill someone in general, but sometimes it is truly an unfortunate yet necessary deed.

“Only when the military and America can disassociate Muslims from terror can we move onto a brighter future of religious collaboration and dialogue that defines America and makes me proud to be an American,” Abdo wrote. Uhh, I think it’s Muslims who need to disassociate themselves from terror. They’re the ones who keep blowing shit up across the globe.

Abdo’s jihad against the US military was just beginning. In July 2011, Abdo purchased a conspicuous amount of smokeless gunpowder, as well as shotgun ammo. The purchase was alerted to authorities by the store’s manager, and police tracked him to a nearby motel, which he had been living out of. In the room, police found typical Islamic reading, including the child-porn fairytale known as the Qur’an, and al Qaeda’s Inspire magazine, which contained an article about bomb-making. They also found a pressure cooker and shrapnel with which Abdo was trying to make an explosive device.

Abdo was arrested. He claimed he was HIV-positive, allegedly having tried to inject himself with the virus so he could “continue [his] jihad” if he were not “martyred.” It is quite possible he used another man’s penis as the method of injection. He used his claimed serostatus as a weapon, spitting blood at guards and other inmates. During his trial, his face was partially covered (but not like a Muslimah) so he couldn’t expectorate at court personnel. Later tests confirmed Abdo was, in fact, HIV-negative.

FBI agents unraveled the truth of Abdo’s plot, which was set to take place within days of his arrest. He planned on detonating the bomb at a hinese restaurant near Fort Hood, where jihadist Nidal Malik Hasan had gone on a shooting rampage. After the blast, Abdo then planned on shooting at soldiers and their families as they fled. He claimed any civilians who died in the carnage were “collateral damage.” There are a lot of hypocrites on this site, but this one is among the worst – killing civilians because he’s outraged that the US unintentionally killed civilians? “I don’t appreciate what my unit did in Afghanistan,” Abdo told investigators. Well, we don’t appreciate what you (and plenty of other Muslims) tried to do here.

“I have continued to answer the call of jihad and will continue to the day I am called to account for my deeds,” Abdo stated at his sentencing, not knowing that he was actually describing his sentencing. He was given two consecutive life sentences.
