11 countries including Palestine, Egypt, and Syria have been named amongst those where students, teachers and academics are intentionally attacked

GCPEA logo

Education Under Attack, published by the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA), shows the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are highly impacted by a war strategy of intentionally targeting students of all ages, teachers and academics.

The 250-page study found that 30 countries experienced this pattern of deliberate attacks between 2009 and 2013, including 11 in the MENA including: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel/Palestine, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Turkey and Yemen.

“Schools, students and staff are not just caught in the crossfire but are all too often the targets of attacks,” Diya Nijhowne, director of GCPEA, explained. “They are bombed, burned, shot, threatened and abducted precisely because of their connection to education. They are soft, easy targets and states and armed groups need to protect them from being used as a tactic of war.”

In 24 of the 30 countries profiled in the study, seven of which are in the MENA region, warring parties took over schools in whole or part, using them as bases, barracks, firing positions, weapons caches and for other purposes.

Approximately 1,000 schools in Syria have allegedly been used as detention and torture centres by government forces. The Free Syrian Army has also allegedly used schools as bases, makeshift hospitals, detention centres and for ammunition storage.

Buildings that should have been safe places for learning became actual battlefields when military use made them a target for attack.

Yemini government airstrikes targeted nine schools in Abyan, for example, after militants linked to Al-Qaeda used them for military purposes.

“Attacks on education in the last five years have killed hundreds of students, teachers and academics and injured many more,” Nijhowne said.

“Hundreds of thousands of students have been denied the right to an education when their schools and universities have been intentionally damaged or destroyed or used for military purposes.”

Between 2009 and 2012, GCPEA found, students and educators were most at risk in 13 countries. In heavily affected countries, such as Iran, Israel/Palestine, Libya and Yemen, there were reports of at least 500 attacks, or at least 500 education-related victims, or education buildings used for military purposes.

In very heavily affected countries, such as Sudan and Syria, there were 1,000 or more attacks or victims.

ESCWA urges Egypt and Jordan to boycott Israeli settlement products

ESCWA LogoThe executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), Rima Khalaf, is urging both Egypt and Jordan to boycott Israeli settlement products. “Boycotting the settlement products will not hurt Arab countries, including the least advantaged like Egypt and Jordan,” Khalaf stated on Tuesday.

Speaking at a conference in Tunis, the UN official advised the Arab states, many of which are secretly importing goods from Israel, to at least boycott the settlement products, pointing out that “many European countries are already boycotting them.”

“The Israeli settlements are established on occupied Palestinian land and Israel encourages the Jewish population to settle there while depriving the original Palestinian owners of living there,” Khalaf added.

ESCWA presented its “Arab integration” report in Tunis on Tuesday, which experts took two years to prepare. The report calls to revive Arab integration based on the recommendations and proposals formulated during the Arab summits, starting with reducing the tariff for transporting goods by 50 per cent and boycotting the Israeli settlement products.

According to the report, 350 million people live in the Arab region, where a quarter of its young people and one fifth of women are unemployed, and about 50 million are suffering from malnutrition

Live and dangerous - and on stage in Stockton.

Explosive tribute band Limehouse Lizzy are set for a gig at ARC next week in an action packed show that promises pyro fuelled explosions of noise.

From The Boys are Back in Town and Jailbreak to the tender lyricism of Sarah and Whisky in the Jar, this is a full-blown celebration of Thin Lizzy’s genius.

They’ve been featured by BBC2’s arts showcase Arena, they’ve played gigs all over Europe, and they’ve even received a Performing Rights Society award for being one of the UK’s hardest-working bands.

All plaudits for a band whose frontman Wayne Ellis exudes all the charisma and effortless musicianship that made Lynott such an enduring star.

Israel WB killings amount to war crimes: Amnesty

Israeli soldiers detain a Palestinian in the Jordan Valley, West Bank (file photo)

Amnesty International says unlawful killing and injuring of Palestinian civilians by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank amounts to war crimes.

“The report presents a body of evidence that shows a harrowing pattern of unlawful killings and unwarranted injuries of Palestinian civilians by Israeli forces in the West Bank,” Philip Luther, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at Amnesty International, said in a report on Thursday.

In the report, Amnesty blamed Israel for committing “war crimes and other serious violations of international law” against Palestinians.

Tel Aviv is allowing its “trigger happy soldiers” to kill Palestinians with virtual immunity, it said.

The London-based rights group added that Israeli forces have killed dozens of Palestinians in the past three years, with the Tel Aviv regime showing “callous disregard for human life.”

The group stated that in the cases it reviewed, Palestinians were not posing any imminent or direct threat to Israeli troops.

The 87-page report, entitled “Trigger-happy: Israel’s use of excessive force in the West Bank,” studied the killing of 45 Palestinians and wounding of thousands of others.

The group called for “independent, impartial, transparent and prompt investigation” into the killings.

“A strong message must be sent to Israeli soldiers and police officers that abuses will not go unpunished,” Luther urged.

Amnesty also called on the United States, the European Union and the rest of the international community to “suspend all transfers of munitions, weapons and other equipment to Israel” to pressure it to change.

Tel Aviv, however, rejected the report as biased.

Wake nose-bite accused Jodie Marie Rutley appears before Teesside magistrates

Guisborough Quoit Social Club

A woman has appeared in court in relation to an incident in which another woman’s nose was bitten off at a wake.

Jodie Marie Rutley, 20, was arrested after the 23-year-old was assaulted outside a Guisborough club at the wake of a teenage footballer.

The victim had part of her nose bitten off outside Guisborough Quoit Club on Tuesday night.

The club had been packed with mourners following the funeral of 19-year-old Jordan Dowson , who died in a car accident.

Today, Rutley, of Charltons Terrace, Saltburn , made a brief appearance before Teesside Magistrates’ Court .

She faced a total of four charges, two of wounding with intent and two of possessing a knife in a public place - Northgate in Guisborough.

Her solicitor David Dedman said there was no application for bail.

Video: 'Cup win was meant to be dawn of Boro's golden age - but the club then went backwards'

28 Feb 2014 11:45

Anthony Vickers looks at the significance of the win - and says that the club failed to fully capitalise on their day in Cardiff

At the time, Anthony Vickers heard one Boro fan dismiss the Carling Cup win as "papering over the cracks".

Looking back on the win a decade later, he says it is clear that it was supposed to be the springboard for a golden age at the Riverside which never actually came.

"It will be looked back on as a high water mark," says sports writer Anthony Vickers in our latest video.

"It was meant to be the start of a fantastic golden era but the fact is that we went backwards after that, I think."

Your Daily Muslim: Dzafer Nuhic

Dzafer Nuhic has been skipping leg day

Australian Muslim Dzafer Nuhic’s hobbies include douching, being a douchebag, and general douchebaggery. The wannabe bro posts all sorts of pictures of him and his Islamic friends trying to look tough, and even posts pictures of his gradually-becoming-less-scrawny-but-still-not-impressive arms at the gym. Watching Nuhic claim he’s ripped is like watching someone claim Islam is the religion of peace. On that note, Nuhic is quite adept at showcasing the true peacefulness of his religion. Recently, he found some counterjihad pages on Facebook and proceeded to have a meltdown, both on the pages’ walls and on his own.

dzafernuhic1

As you can see, the wannabe tough guy doesn’t shy away from making threats. Of course, Nuhic would probably cower and run with his tail between his legs in the unfortunate event of an actual confrontation. As for different nationalities – it isn’t national origin that encourages people to try to molest children under the guise of marriage.

dzafernuhic2

Now he’s just gone off the rails. Leave it to a Muslim to imply Jewish involvement in something Jews had nothing to do with. Also, I don’t think he understands that “you’s” (what he’s trying to say when he says “use”) is grammatically incorrect. Then again, when has a foamer ever had good grammar?

Part One: Pictures - including the two Boro goals - from the League Cup final a decade ago

On 29 February 2004 Middlesbrough FC won the Carling Cup final with a 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff.

The opening goal for Boro came from striker Joseph-Desire Job - who scored after two minutes from a Bolo Zenden cross.

Five minutes later, the Cameroon international was tripped in the box and Zenden - who was to go on to claim man-of-the-match - stepped up to convert the penalty.

Kevin Davies scored for Bolton in the 21st minute, but Boro held on to claim victory.

The gallery above shows some of the highlights from the match itself - including the two Boro goals.

Movie review: The Book Thief (12A)

28 Feb 2014 08:00

Based on the beloved international bestselling book, The Book Thief tells the story of Liesel, an extraordinary and courageous young girl sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany

Liesel (Sophie Nélisse) in The Book Thief

The Second World War might have been long ignored by Hollywood, but no more.

And so, after Colin Firth’s splendid The Railway Man, George Clooney’s misfire The Monuments Men and Russia’s homegrown IMAX blockbuster Stalingrad, here’s another flashback that’s seeking well-intentioned depths beyond the carnage.

In fact, given that The Book Thief is from the multi-Oscar winning ‘Life of Pi studio’, it could be heralding a new era of spiritual cinema which seeks to offer alternatives to limb-shattering shocks.

Based on the bestselling novel by Markus Zusak, the story begins gently in the clouds above a billowing stream engine with Death (Roger Allam) narrating.

When and where will Death call for the souls of the living in wartime?

Australian star Geoffrey Rush (Shine) can be irritating, but he splendidly leads the cast as Hans Hubermann, husband of Rosa (an admirably plain Emily Watson, who played Rose in War Horse).

They are the adoptive parents of newcomer Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse), who is befriended by Rudy Steiner (Nico Liersch).

Learning to read with encouragement from her new family and Max, a Jewish refugee they are hiding under the stairs, Liesel takes to sharing the escapism of books with others.

Directed in measured fashion by Brian Percival (Downton Abbey), The Book Thief feels like a Sunday afternoon drama that deserves to be seen any night of the week.

The two child leads are arguably too angelic, but their performances mean that this film, like The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas (2008), is one that all film-literate children aged 10 to 16 should be taken to see on the big screen.

Now aged 82, John Williams’ latest score is, incredibly, his 49th Oscar nomination. Five times a winner (including Jaws, ET and Schindler’s List), he’s second only to Walt Disney (22 wins from 59 nods).

Match report: Final - Middlesbrough 2 Bolton 1

Middlesbrough picked up their first major trophy in Cardiff on February 29, 2004.

Two early goals and nerves of steel put earlier woes firmly in the past as the packed Millenium Stadium crowd witnessed the highlight of a golden era for Boro.

Here's how the Gazette reported on that historic league cup final.

Sheer bliss!

Boro finally put 128 years of failure to rest on the most glorious afternoon that Teesside has surely ever witnessed.

We may have had no fingernails left, thousands of hearts were about to give up beating, while there'll be long queues at doctors' surgeries this week for blood pressure tablets.

But maybe you have to suffer the pain to taste the ecstasy - and it doesn't get any better than this.

The boys did it. They damn well did it.

Boro have won a trophy at last and we're all checking our passports in preparation for next season's trip into Europe.

A whole new generation of young Josephs, Bolos and Gaizkas will be born on Teesside before the end of the year.

Bringing home the Carling Cup was well worth the long wait and the ecstatic scenes scenes that greeted the final whistle - with the celebrations which followed - will live in our memories for the rest of our lives.

Few of us would have expected the game to unfold in the way in which it did because Boro effectively had the cup won after seven stunning minutes.

Two glorious goals - with Joseph Job to the fore in both of them - should have left Bolton on their knees.

The wonderful start that we all dreamed about on Saturday night arrived after only one minute and 45 seconds.

Gaizka Mendieta started the move on the right and brought in Bolo Zenden with a defence-splitting pass out to the left.

The Dutchman made space before hammering an intelligent, low cross right through to the Bolton goalmouth, which was perfect for Job to ghost in and stab home at the far post.

Before we could catch our breaths, Boro had the opportunity to make it two from the penalty spot.

Job turned quickly inside the box after picking up a low through ball from Mendieta and was tripped by Emerson Thome as he prepared to go clear. It was a clear-cut penalty but maybe a brave decision by Mike Riley to award it as such a crucial stage.

Once the referee had waved away Bolton's ten-man protest, Zenden stepped forward to take the kick but slipped as he reached the ball, and he must have been mightily relieved to see his straight-struck shot rebound high into the net off Jussi Jaaskelainen's boot as the keeper dived to the right.

You had to kick yourself because the Cup was apparently in the bag with 83 minutes to play still remaining.

As Boro battled to hold their nerve, they continued to create on the break and might have scored a third goal when a dangerous cross from Juninho was screwed over his own bar by Thome.

Yet the game turned dramatically just two minutes later when Juninho lost the ball on the right.

Kevin Davies received the ball with his back to goal, spun wide round Gareth Southgate but was still as a narrow angle to the goal. So much so that when he unleashed a strong low drive, it looked easy meat for Mark Schwarzer.

But the keeper inexplicably fumbled the shot and there was agony for Boro and their travelling faithful when the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Before Boro could settle again, they were being ripped apart by rampant Bolton attacks.

Jay Jay Okocha sent a dipping free kick onto the roof of Boro's net, which was the start of a spell of pressure that needed every hand to the pumps as Bolton regularly got six men into the box in apparent non-stop attacks.

Bolton were denied by the inside of Boro's left-hand post when Per Frandsen's shot came back off the woodwork and then Schwarzer made a remarkable save from the rebound by smotheirng Youri Djorkarff's follow-up shot when it looked certain the Frenchman would score.

On 32 minutes Ugo Ehiogu got up to head away a Bruno N'Gotty free kick by Djorkaeff picked up the loose ball and fired it niches wide of Boro's left-hand post.

Schwarter then fully redeemed himself with a second fantastic save, again from Djorkaeff, following a mis-kick from Southgate.

Boro were forced to operate on automatic pilot throughout a torrid 15-minute spell, but they somehow kept Bolton at bay and then afterwards always had a slight edge.

The pressure was broken in 37 minutes when Job made a strong run through the middle and linked up with George Boateng before Mendieta fired well wide from a good position.

Schwarzer then made another fine save from a 30-yard piledriver from Okocha as Bolton finished the half strongly.

During the interval there was good reason to assume that Boro might not hang on, but in fact they found new inner strength and were the better side throughout the second half - even though we gained a dozen grey hairs every time Bolton pushed forward.

As Boro reasserted themselves, they created the best chance of the half when Job released Mendieta, who ran clear before chipping over the advancing Jaaskelainen and over the bar.

Nolan wasted a chance for Bolton when heading straight into Schwarzer's arms from a Nicky Hunt cross, but otherwise all the best chances throughout the rest of the half belonged to Boro.

Jaaskelainen made a fine save from a Mendieta free kick and then, as Bolton poured forward in the final ten minutes, Boro created a handful of great openings on the break.

Juninho fired wide after being put through by substitute Michael Ricketts, Mendieta needed too much time after being set up by Juninho and then Ricketts fired straight at Jaaskelainen follwing another pass from Juninho.

Four minutes of added time caused more missed heartbeats, but at the final whistle nobody could argue that Boro deserved to bring the trophy back to Teesside.

As Steve McClaren said afterwards, there were 12 heroes out there.

Maybe none did better than Zenden, who enjoyed his finest hour in a Boro shirt, with his marvellous defensive work supporting his effectiveness on the break.

Mendieta and Juninho also did well on the break after Job's wonderful early show.

In midfield, George Boateng was a colossus, tackling everything that moved.

When the defence was under pressure, every man did his job with Southgate a tower of strength from beginning to end and Ehiogu enjoying a magnificent second half.

Now the club must move forward, after breaking a 128-year hoodoo, and if it is going to get better than this, the I, for one, can't wait.

Arab League convenes to discuss Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque

Al-Aqsa MosqueThe Arab League is to hold an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss the escalating Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque, including proposed legislation to impose Israeli guardianship over the third holiest site for Muslims.

Ambassador of the Palestinian Authority in Cairo Barakat Al-Farrah explained that: “The permanent membership of the State of Palestine filed a call to the Arab League to hold the meeting.”

In a statement, Al-Farrah noted that the call invited all permanent members to attend the meeting in order to discuss the escalating Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Al-Farrah reiterated that if the Israeli settlers, under the protection of Israeli occupation forces, are freely allowed to continuously storm the Mosque then this could trigger a wave of violence in the region. “This might be a religious conflict with unneeded consequences,” he warned.

The Israeli Knesset held a discussion on Tuesday about replacing Jordanian guardianship over Al-Aqsa Mosque with Israeli control.

During the Knesset debate, extremist Knesset member Miri Regev from the Likud Party challenged the right of Muslims to their holy site. “Why can a Muslim cry out loud in his own language that ‘there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet and messenger,’ yet a Jew cannot enter the Temple Mount and recite out loud ‘Hear O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One?’” Regev asked, concluding that, “he who gives up on the [Temple] Mount will be left without a home.”

A woman is due to appear in court accused of biting another woman’s nose off at a wake.

The 20-year-old woman was today charged with two counts of section 18 wounding and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.

The charges were made in connection with an assault on a 23-year-old woman at Guisborough Quoit Club on Tuesday night.

A wake for 19-year-old Guisborough footballer Jordan Dowson was being held at the time. He died in a car accident earlier this month.

The 23-year-old woman was assaulted outside the club and had her nose bitten off. She was taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital.

The 20-year-old woman is due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

US in new crusade war on democracy: Analyst

The United States has embarked on a “new crusade” war on democracy across the globe, an analyst writes in a column for the Press TV website.

“On the eve of the 100th anniversary of World War I, the US has embarked on a new crusade – to make the world unsafe for democracy,” Kevin Barrett wrote on Wednesday.

He said the US is determined to “destroy democracy in Iran, Russia, and Latin America”, due to the failure of the “international bankers” running the US government to “buy enough votes to impose their will on every country.”

“So democracy is fine – as long as voters elect the New World Order candidate. But if they vote for a candidate who doesn’t suit the oligarchs, get ready for a coup!” wrote Barrett.

He said the US slaughtered 3.5 million Vietnamese and nearly one million Cambodians under cover of defending democracy in Southeast Asia.

Barrett added that the US democratic plots – wars and sanctions – in the Middle East have left millions of Iraqis dead.

He said the “banksters” will unseat “any government that stands up to them – even in the USA”, citing the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy before the end of his term in 1963.

“The New World Order banksters seek to overthrow democratically-elected governments all over the world precisely because they do care who makes and enforces the laws,” Barrett wrote.

He said the “smiling Mickey Mouse mask” of the New World Order has fallen away and that “the bloodthirsty grin of satanic banksters bent on establishing an Orwellian one-world dictatorship” has been revealed.

Redcar’s Coatham Memorial Hall and Guisborough Quoit Club will both play host to mix of familiar TV faces and some of the freshest comics in the UK

Hoping it's going to be a knockout at Coatham Memorial Hall, home of Redcar Boxing Club, are Carmel Ramsay, of Brass Neck Comedy, and club founder Frankie Wales

It's been raising the roof at Middlesbrough Town Hall for five years - and now the Big Mouth Comedy Club is promising some knockout nights in Redcar and Guisborough too.

On the first Friday of every month, Redcar’s Coatham Memorial Hall - home of Redcar Boxing Club - and Guisborough Quoit Club will both play host to a mix of familiar TV faces and some of the freshest comics on the UK circuit.

Tickets for the new Friday night gigs (April 4, May 2 and June 6) go on sale at 10am on Saturday. They include comics with a combined string of TV credits including 8 Out of 10 Cats, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Russell Howard’s Good News, ITV’s Comedy Rocks and classic sitcom Absolutely Fabulous.

Saltburn's popular Brass Neck Comedy Club is also joining the Big Mouth stable.

Carmel Ramsay of Big Mouth Comedy said: “Our gigs in Boro and Saltburn both sell-out in advance and always go down a storm, and we’ve constantly had people asking us to bring Big Mouth to different places, but we’ve always wanted to wait until we’ve found the right venues.

“Coatham Memorial Hall is one of the best rooms we’ve seen in ages.

“Really atmospheric, loads of wood panelling and memorabilia, and a great big stage that the comics are going to love.

“It’s the same with the Quoit Club in Guisborough.

“It’s the perfect room for Big Mouth and just a heartbeat away from the High Street.

Frankie Wales of Coatham Memorial Hall said: “We’re really looking forward to this. I’m a huge comedy fan.”

PR boss Dave Allen wins Best New Business gong for community work

Work with charities and the business community earn Dave Allen the Best New Business Tees Valley award

A communications specialist has won a Best New Business gong for his community work.

Dave Allen set up his PR company, Dave Allen Communications, after he was made redundant from a 17-year run as Middlesbrough Football Club’s press officer.

He still has strong links with the club, but it was his work with charities and the business community that earned him the Best New Business Tees Valley award, which he collected at his “old stomping ground” - the Riverside Stadium.

Dave said: “I knew I’d been shortlisted, but I didn’t expect to win as my business isn’t community-based. I’m absolutely delighted.”

Dave also does work for the Teesside Philanthropic Foundation and the Finley Cooper Fund, which both have their roots on Teesside.

Brian Havelock happy to have Richard Hall on board at Redcar Bears

Redcar Bears back up to full strength again following the capture of Northallerton-born Richard Hall who lives in Bedale

Richard Hall (blue helmet colour) pictured racing against Redcar during his time with Sheffield - now he has joined the Ecco Finishing Bears

Club supremo Brian Havelock has revealed he scoured the world seeking the final piece of his 2014 Redcar Bears jigsaw before finding him right on his doorstep.

The Ecco Finishing Bears were rocked last week when Australian star Kozza Smith was prevented from taking his place in the side because of visa problems.

But the team is now back up to full strength again following the capture of Northallerton-born Richard Hall who lives in Bedale.

The 29-year-old three-times British Finalist, who rode for Sheffield last year, and finished with a 6.97 average, has a wealth of experience and was a star of Peterborough Panthers’ Elite League-winning side of 2006.

He is best known among many Bears fans for winning the South Tees Silver Helmet individual crown in spectacular fashion that season.

“It was a big disappointment to lose Kozza,” admitted Havelock, “but I can sympathise with him.

“The only visa he was eligible for wouldn’t have allowed him any guest rides, doubling up opportunities or open meetings and that didn’t make it viable for him.

“I tried all over the world to get a replacement once it became clear Kozza was out of the equation.

“I spoke to two riders in Australia, two Germans, two Danes and one in Argentina.

“I actually had a deal done with Pepe Franc too, but he came back the next day and wanted to alter some of the terms.

“I told him that was the deal and if he decided he didn’t like it, it was off.

“But I’m happy to have Richard on board. He’ll be fairly consistent, especially at home.

“And the difference is that he wants to ride for us - that’s very important.

“Some riders want this and want that and think they are the best in the world.”

Meanwhile new Bears No 1 Richard Lawson has been called up by Great Britain to race against the Rest of the World in the Ben Fund Bonanza meeting at Leicester on Sunday, March 9.

And new Team GB manager Alun Rossiter has hinted that a good performance next month could lead to further full international appearances.

Lawson was drafted in after Lewis Bridger pulled out, saying his equipment wouldn’t be ready and he didn’t want to go into the meeting half-heartedly.

Rossiter said: “I appreciate his honesty with that, and I’ve therefore called up Richard who is a rider who was always in my thoughts.

“I already know what several of the more experienced senior riders are capable of but it’s also important that I start looking at those who have been making good progress recently, and this will be a good test for Richard to see how he adapts at this level.”

The Bears hold a meeting for track staff in the Bears Bar at South Tees Motorsports Park tonight (7.30pm).

All fans are welcome to attend for a pre-season meet-up.

Man escapes Stockton flat after front door of his home is set on fire in arson attack

27 Feb 2014 11:47

Man knew what to do after smoke alarm activated in early hours after Cleveland Fire Brigade home safety visit just weeks before

An investigation is under way into a suspected arson attack after the front door of a home was “maliciously” set on fire.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a flat on Wembley Way, Oxbridge, Stockton, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A man living in the property escaped the blaze unscathed - and knew what to do thanks to a home fire safety visit from Cleveland Fire Brigade just weeks ago.

Fire crews from Stockton and Thornaby attended the blaze just before 2.15am after receiving a call from the occupant who was alerted by a smoke alarm.

Stephen Graham, crew manager at Stockton Fire Station, said: “Someone had maliciously set fire to his front door.

“The man inside self-rescued - he escaped via a rear door in his flat.

“He had only just had a home fire safety visit.

“It was the smoke alarms which alerted him to the fire and he followed his emergency action plan which we had given him during the visit just weeks before.”

As a result of the fire, there was heat and smoke damage to the front door and smoke damage inside the property.

The fire brigade and Cleveland Police will now be investigating the blaze.

At the scene today, the area around the flat was cordoned off while officers carried out their inquiries.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman confirmed they were treating the incident as arson.

“There will now be a joint investigation,” she said.

Cleveland Fire Brigade carry out free home fire safety visits to give prevention advice and help put together planning escape routes if a fire does occur.

Where necessary the brigade will also provide and fit smoke alarms. Call 01429 874063 to book.
