US plummets in press freedom rankings

A new report by Reporters Without Borders has shown that there has been a major decline in press freedom in the United States.

The US plunged 13 places from 32nd to 46th in the France-based group’s 2014 World Press Freedom Index.

The plunge was mainly caused by revelations about the US government’s spying activities and the crackdown on whistleblowers and journalists who brought to light Washington’s spying programs.

The US also dropped 27 places to the 47th place in Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index in 2012 after several journalists were arrested while covering the Occupy protests.

Press freedom in the US saw some progress in 2013 but it faced “one of the most significant declines” in the world last year, according to Reporters Without Borders, mostly due to attacks on whistleblowers.

Last year, American whistleblower Edward Snowden leaked documents he had obtained from the National Security Agency which showed, among other things, how the US spied on Americans’ phone calls and the online activities of all people around the world.

Fearing prosecution, Snowden had fled to Hong Kong before making the revelations. He then fled to Russia and was granted temporary asylum there in August.

Snowden is wanted in the US on espionage charges and even some former US officials, like former CIA director James Woolsey, have suggested that he should be hanged.

The Obama administration has repeatedly said that Snowden committed crimes by disclosing US spying programs and National Intelligence Director James Clapper once referred to journalists who helped expose such programs as Snowden’s “accomplices.”

Did I Move?

With all the smirking on the left about their electoral victories, it’s important to remember that Democrats haven’t won the hearts and minds of the American people. They changed the people. If you pour vinegar into a bottle of wine, the wine didn’t turn, you poured vinegar into it. Similarly, liberals changed no minds. They added millions of new liberal voters through immigration.

So why are Republicans like Trey Gowdy, Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and John Boehner making fools of themselves in order to spot the Democrats three more touchdowns?

The House Republicans’ “Standards for Immigration Reform,” for example, contains this fat, honking nonsense: “One of the great founding principles of our country was that children would not be punished for the mistakes of their parents.”

As the kids say: WTF?

That may be a pleasant-sounding sentiment, but it has absolutely nothing to do with our country’s history. Not the first thing. Did Republicans really think they could pawn off the idea that our forefathers fought and died at Valley Forge so that illegal aliens wouldn’t have to live in the shadows?

Yeah, it was a long shot. We didn’t know you guys had read the Constitution. We’ll be quiet now.

Apart from the fact that protecting children from the mistakes of their parents has not the slightest connection with the nation’s founding, it’s a ridiculous concept.

Yes, children suffer when their parents break the law. Also when their parents get divorced, become alcoholics, don’t read to them at night, feed them junk food and take them to Justin Bieber concerts. None of that is the child’s fault.

But it’s not the country’s fault either.

If we have to excuse lawbreaking so as not to “punish the children,” there’s no end to the crimes that have to be forgiven — insider trading, theft, rape, murder and so on.

How do you think kids feel when their father has to “live in the shadows” because he committed a rape? The kids did nothing wrong, but they have to go to bed every night wondering: Is tomorrow the day Dad is going to be caught?

How do you function like that? And how awful it must be when their dad is sent to prison! How do you think Jack Abramoff’s kids felt? What about Martha Stewart’s kid?

Why not just forgive the crimes of all perpetrators who have kids? At a minimum, shouldn’t we allow criminals to defer their sentences until their kids turn 26 so they can stay on Dad’s health insurance? Or at least until their kids have gone to college? Chris Christie can give them in-state tuition!

“It’s not the kids’ fault” proves too much. People can get away with anything if they’re willing to use their children as trump cards to avoid the force of law.

The once-respected Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., compared illegal aliens brought here as kids to children who steal a grape or scream in a restaurant:

“When children wander into neighborhood yards, we don’t call that trespassing. When children cry and yell and scream at restaurants or on airplanes, we don’t call that a violation of the noise ordinance. When children eat a grape at the grocery store or eat a piece of candy waiting in line before Mom or Dad pays for it, we don’t have them arrested for petty larceny.”

Yes, but in those cases, both the child and his parents had a right to be where they were — the yard, restaurant or grocery store — when the child suddenly behaved like a child. With illegal aliens, the parents are more like gypsies teaching their kids to beg and pick pockets. The parents forced the kids into being lawbreakers.

Similarly, Palestinians use their children to commit acts of terrorism against Israel, so that when Israel responds, the parents can wail, “They’re bombing children!”

(I thought only liberals couldn’t do analogies.)

Americans are under no moral obligation to admit huge numbers of people who have no particular right to be here just because the Democrats need 30 million new voters.

Why shouldn’t Republicans oppose mass immigration on the grounds that immigrants will vote Democratic? The only reason the Democrats want mass immigration is because they know immigrants will vote Democratic. (Also for the cheap nannies and gardeners.)

Immigration is the “single issue” that decides every other issue. If this country were the same demographically today as it was in 1980, Romney would have won a bigger victory in 2012 than Reagan did against Carter. And we wouldn’t have to hear about soccer all the time.

We’re living in a different country now, and I can’t recall moving! Had I wanted to live in Japan, I could have moved there. Had I had wanted to live in Mexico, Pakistan or Chechnya — I could have moved to those places, too.

(Although maybe not. They all have stricter immigration policies than we do.)

I’m sure they’re lovely, but I wanted to live in America. Now I can’t. At the current rate of immigration, it won’t exist anymore. The Democrats couldn’t win elections there, so they changed it.

With the repeal of Obamacare in the balance, I have argued that it’s insane for Republicans to waste resources primarying their own guys in 2014. Even the most heinous Republican can usually argue, “Would you really rather have a Democrat in this seat?”

But any Republican who supports mass immigration — whether with Marco Rubio’s amnesty bill, or idiotic arguments about “not punishing the children” — has forfeited that claim. If the country is going to be ruined anyway, it could not matter less who wins any particular seat on this Titanic.

Israeli navy forces detain three Gazan fishermen

Israeli naval forces have detained three Palestinian fishermen off the coast of the blockaded Gaza Strip and confiscated their boats.

Witnesses said Israeli warships have stopped two Palestinian fishing boats near the city of Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip early on Tuesday, and arrested three fishermen at gunpoint.

The boats and fishermen were taken to an unknown location.

Palestinian boats are permitted to fish up to six nautical miles from the Gaza coast according to the terms of Israel’s naval blockade on the impoverished enclave.

The fishing area was extended to six nautical miles from three nautical miles on November 21, 2012 in the truce deal that ended an eight-day Israeli military assault on the Gaza Strip.

Gaza has been blockaded since June 2007, which is a situation that has caused a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

The apartheid regime of Israel denies about 1.7 million people in Gaza their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, jobs that pay proper wages, and adequate healthcare and education.

The Palestinian Non-Governmental Organizations Network (PNGO), which represents more than 130 Palestinian civil society organizations, has called on the international community to end the “continuous Israeli siege.”

Several human rights organizations and civil groups have also criticized the Egyptian army for preventing the people in Gaza from accessing most of their basic goods like construction materials, food, and fuel.

Muslim Brotherhood condemns EU for supporting coup

Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood has condemned the European Union for what it calls the bloc’s empty words and double standards.

The Muslim Brotherhood made the condemnation on Tuesday, in response to a recent statement by the European Union foreign ministers about Egypt’s current developments.

The EU has criticized the Egyptian authorities for using violence during the constitutional referendum.

But the Brotherhood said that by issuing nicely-worded messages, the EU is playing a game with the Egyptian people.

They added that the EU claims to be upholding human rights and democratic values while it is giving practical support to the military-backed regime.

The Brotherhood also said that instead of “recognizing the coup,” the EU concluded its statement by saying that the African country is an important partner for the bloc and that it would continue its support to the country.

“We were hoping that this support continues for the Egyptian people, not for the illegitimate military authorities,” it added.

This comes while the Egyptian Foreign Ministry has also rejected the EU’s statement, advising the bloc not to see itself as the country’s guardian.

Egypt has been experiencing unrelenting violence since July 3, when the army toppled first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament. The military also appointed the head of the Supreme Constitutional Court, Adly Mahmoud Mansour, as the new interim president.

Hundreds have lost their lives in the ensuing violence across the country. Thousands of members of the Muslim Brotherhood and its supporters have been arrested and accused of inciting violence in the North African country.

Al-Sisi and the reality of Sinai

General Sisi

Sinawi YouTube channel shared a video entitled “Watch the response of the people of Sinai in the wake of the leaking of Al-Sisi’s remarks on the area”. The video features scenes of destruction, house demolitions and cries by Sinai citizens who are victims of the military operations carried out by the Egyptian army.

The video was produced in the aftermath of a recent leaking of a statement by Egyptian Minister of Defence Abdel Al-Fattah Al-Sisi in which he warned against the danger of dealing militarily or through security measures in Sinai.

Sinawi wrote the following about the video:

“For more than 120 days, the security and military authorities have been conducting an intensive campaign against most of the north Sinai region. The campaign has been focused primarily on the areas close to the borders of the governorate.

“The campaign is accompanied by a daily disruption to all means of land transport and telecommunications including mobile phones and internet. The military authorities impose a curfew for several hours during the day. Several vital locations and squares have been declared no-go areas including six main squares.

“Living conditions in Sinai are deteriorating by the day. Prices are very high and goods are not easily accessible. Shop owners are no longer able to exhibit their commodities especially in Sheikh Zwayyid Square and at Al-Masurah. Indiscriminate killings have become daily occurrences. On Wednesday, three individuals were shot dead by members of a special security force belonging to Al-Arish Third Police Station. The shooting was unprovoked except that the car carrying the victims passed the police station.

“As part of the security campaign, Al-Salam Bridge above the Suez Canal, which is a lifeline for Sinai, has been closed for the six consecutive months. Passage using ferries is still rather difficult.

“We, the people of Sinai, have not been surprised by the statement made by the Minister of Defence saying the security solution in Sinai is futile and that it is not the ideal solution to the problem. We know very well what the objective of this campaign is.”

The five minute video contains images of Al-Sisi’s speech juxtaposed with images of the people of Sinai. The images play out as follows:

1. It begins with Al-Sisi, wearing his military uniform speaking in to the camera as if addressing an audience “You cannot imagine [the repercussions], as an army officer, of simply coming to Rafah or Sheikh Zwayyid, besieging them, removing their inhabitants and blowing up the buildings within them.”

2. Footage of army personnel carriers driving through a town inside Sinai while replaying Al-Sisi’s remarks.

3. Al-Sisi continues: “Is it difficult for us to do this? We can do it without killing anyone; all you need to do is impose a siege around Rafah and Sheikh Zwayyid, bring the inhabitants out and blow up the houses.”

4. Footage of Egyptian soldiers in residential areas firing bullets at houses.

5. An unidentified man holds the mutilated body of a child saying: “God is greater than you Sisi. Is this the terrorism Sisi claims to be fighting? This [child] was hit with artillery. Is this the terrorism Sisi talks about; children killed with artillery shells? To God we belong and to Him we return. God suffices for us and He is our refuge.”

6. The mutilated body of the child is then placed next to the bodies of other mutilated children lined on the ground.

7. Al-Sisi’s second remark is replayed in the background as scenes from the area are shown along with footage of the Egyptian troops walking through it and a helicopter firing a missile in to one of the houses.

8. Returning to Al-Sisi: “We could do this. When one person fires, a hundred may come out and fire in return. Two or three innocent people may die. Ultimately, you’re creating an enemy for you and your country because people would want to seek revenge.”

9. Children carrying remains of empty shells, one of them says: “They burned down my house. They forced us to flee. They bombed us from planes from above.” The footage of the helicopter firing a rocket at a house is shown again.

10. A woman stands in the ruins of her house. She says: “May God take revenge for us, soon. May God destroy them. May God damn them. May God break them. May God soon punish them for their betrayal, treason and deceit. They told us to come out of the house. When I returned I found that they blew up my house and burned it down. Why did they do this to me? Am I not a Muslim? Are they not Muslims? Is this the work of fellow Muslims? This is sinful of them.”

11. Back to Al-Sisi: “We provide security by our presence and not through combat. Pay attention. This is the sort of thing we say amongst ourselves. By presence and not through combat.”

12. A niqab-wearing women standing in front of her destroyed house: “They forced us out with nothing but the clothes we were wearing. We had no additional clothes for the children. The women had nothing but the clothes they were wearing.”

13. Al-Sisi’s third remark replays. “By presence and not through combat.”

14. Footage of an Egyptian armoured vehicle firing rockets at a house setting it on fire.

15. Al-Sisi’s third remark replays. “By presence and not through combat.”

16. Two women weep in the remains of their house.

17. Al-Sisi: “By presence and not through combat. One tank and one machine-gun can do a lot. But these after all, are your family, your own people.”

18. Footage of soldiers making arrests amid the ruin. Sisi’s remark: “But these after all, are your family, your own people” is replayed.

19. Niqab-wearing women, one of them saying: “What they are doing to us and our children is a sin. They have left us without houses, without food, without anything to drink, without blankets and with nothing. They killed my mother. They killed my mother.”

20. Filmmaker Mona El-Zamlout asks: “Was it your mother who died?”

21. Woman answers: “Yes, my mother. She was an old woman and they killed her.”

21. A man standing in front of a burnt building speaks to camera: “They got the women and the children out of the houses. Then they hit the houses and set them on fire using planes and tanks. They tore the ID cards and certificates and destroyed the trees. They have not even left us garments to change in to apart from the clothes we are now wearing. They got us all out and placed us under those trees there where the women and the children were. They burned all the houses with planes and tanks.”

22. Returning to a clip of the women who appeared earlier and is still in the ruins of her former home: “We complain about them to no one but to God. We complain to God and we say God will punish the oppressors. May God take revenge for us from those who are behind this. May God punish them. May God take away from them their life, their youth and their children. May they suffer as we have suffered.”

23. A replay of Sisi’s: “By presence and not through combat” is played.

24. A group of women sitting next to a wall in mourning of one of the victims shot dead by the army. One of them says: “I would like to say something to our Egyptian army, to the army that is treacherous though it was never treacherous before. To the army that has betrayed us. To the government that has betrayed us. The army that was in unison with the people but has today, together with the police, turned against us. We seek God’s help against them, against them and against Abdul Fattah Al-Sisi.”

Islamabad : The number of people killed in the three blasts in Pakistan’s Peshawar city Tuesday swelled to 13 following the death of one of the 25 injured at the hospital, police said.

Earlier, the toll was reported to be 12 and 25 people being injured. A movie screening was underway at the cinema when three hand grenades went off in quick succession. The hand grenades used for blasts were Chinese made, Geo News reported.

Shama Cinema is located near the Bacha Khan Chowk and its owners said they had been receiving threats.

This is the second attack at a cinema in Peshawar this month. On February 02, five people were killed and 20 injured when two hand grenades went off during the screening of a late-night movie show at the Picture House cinema

Plans for developing 7,000 homes in Middlesbrough are to be sent for Government approval

Plans for developing almost 7,000 homes, a new school and a park in Middlesbrough are to be sent for Government approval

Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development

Plans for developing almost 7,000 homes, a new school and a park in Middlesbrough are to be sent for Government approval.

The proposals, which include three new sites in Coulby Newham, Brookfield and Nunthorpe, will be submitted to the Secretary of State in the latest stage in a major review of the town’s housing needs.

In the biggest house building programme in Middlesbrough for 40 years nearly 7,000 new homes will be built in the town by 2029.

The Local Plan will be considered first at a meeting of Middlesbrough Council next Wednesday. It will then be subject to a public examination by a planning inspector with formal adoption by the council expected to take place in the autumn.

The plans are designed to create successful neighbourhoods and communities for years to come, both at existing regeneration sites including Middlehaven, Gresham and Grove Hill as well as three major new sites in the south and west of the town.

The new sites include 1,000 new homes south of Coulby Newham; 1,700 new houses, a new primary school and country park at Brookfield; and 250 homes with recreational space at land south of Guisborough Road in Nunthorpe, pictured.

Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s executive member for regeneration and economic development, said: “It is critical to Middlesbrough’s future economic prosperity that we address the current housing balance and create communities where future generations want to live.

“This plan allows us to control and shape the developments the town undoubtedly needs, while ensuring our new neighbourhoods will be well designed and landscaped.

“Middlesbrough continues to be the economic engine room of the Tees Valley, and we must bring forward the sort of housing that reflects that over the next 15 years and beyond.”

University of Dundee satellite image at 11.45am on Wednesday of the storm that has caused serious disruption across Britain

Road and rail travellers have endured another miserable day with wind and rain closing major highways and wrecking train services.

Evening rush-hour train passengers were having to contend with disruption almost throughout the country, with a section of the West Coast main line in Lancashire closing between 7pm and 9pm.

West Country rail services continued to be affected by the severe flooding, while Oxfordshire, Hampshire, Sussex, Kent and Surrey were among the counties where train disruption was rife.

The police watchdog will pursue concerns that families of Hillsborough victims were spied on if evidence emerges, Home Secretary Theresa May has said.

The criminal justice system needs to improve so that victims get better treatment, the former Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keir Starmer said as he collected his knighthood at Buckingham Palace.

League One side Bristol City have installed rail seats at their stadium in a bid to promote the reintroduction of safe standing areas.

Worker suffers injuries after being 'crushed' by machinery at Preston Farm Industrial Estate

12 Feb 2014 15:10

Two men were in an inspection pit at Imperial Tankers' Boeing Way premises when they were 'struck by a piece of lifting equipment'

Two workmen were injured after an industrial accident in which one was “crushed” by machinery.

Emergency services, including the Great North Air Ambulance, were called to Imperial Tankers on Preston Farm Industrial Estate to reports of the accident just before 9.45am today .

The two workers were in an inspection pit at the tanker hauliers’ Boeing Way premises when they were “struck by a piece of lifting equipment"

Ambulance crews, several appliances from Cleveland Fire Brigade and the police also attended the scene.

The men did not need to be freed by firefighters and after an assessment, it was decided they did not need to be airlifted to hospital.

They were taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough via road ambulance.

One of the men had crush injuries to his chest.

A spokesman for Imperial Tankers said: “This morning, Tuesday February 11, two Imperial Tankers employees were involved in an accident at the company’s premises in Stockton-on-Tees .

“The two men were working in an inspection pit and were struck by a piece of lifting equipment. The emergency services were called to site and attended promptly.

“The two workers were assessed by paramedics at the scene and have been taken by ambulance to The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

“Although the air ambulance and fire service attended the scene, their assistance was not needed.

“A colleague has gone to the hospital to offer any assistance that might be needed – and the workers’ families have been informed of the accident

“Imperial Tankers’ Health and Safety team are on site and are already conducting an inquiry; they will work in conjunction with the appropriate external agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident”.

Cleveland Fire Brigade sent two appliances from Thornaby as well as the emergency tender and an additional appliance from Stockton.

A spokeswoman said they were requested to attend by the ambulance service to reports that “a man had been crushed by machinery against a wall."

She said that on arrival he was no longer trapped.

The Health and Safety Executive is now looking into the incident.

A spokeswoman said: “We are aware and are making initial inquiries.”

Israeli min. al-Aqsa visit sparks Palestinians anger

Palestinians in the city of East al-Quds (Jerusalem) have angrily reacted to a visit by Israel’s Minister of Housing and Construction Uri Ariel to the al-Aqsa Mosque.

Muslim worshipers at the al-Aqsa Mosque on Tuesday shouted slogans against the minister as he, accompanied by a number of settlers, entered the compound under armed guard.

“The Israeli housing minister, accompanied by 27 settlers, stormed the Al-Aqsa compound through the Al-Magharbah Gate as Israeli police looked on,” Turkish state-run Anadolu Agency news agency quoted Sheikh Azzam al-Khatib, the director-general of Muslim endowments and Al-Aqsa affairs, as saying.

The Israeli forces collected the identity cards of the Palestinian protesters.

The Israeli minister had earlier said that Tel Aviv plans to replace the al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest site in the Muslim world, with a temple.

The remark infuriated Palestinians, who condemned the plan as desecration and part of the Israeli regime’s ongoing attempts to Judaize the al-Aqsa Mosque and East al-Quds.

In recent months, Israeli settlers have stepped up their attacks on the mosque. A move that led to violent confrontations between the two sides.

On February 7, clashes erupted between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli soldiers at the al-Aqsa Mosque when the Israeli troops stormed the holy site.

Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at the people who were praying at the mosque.

At least 20 people, including children, were wounded in the violence.

Eyewitnesses said Israeli forces also beat a number of women and arrested several Palestinians, mostly youths.

Infamous LRA taking advantage of CAR crisis: Report

On Tuesday, the Invisible Children and The Resolve, developers of the LRA Crisis Tracker project, released the 2013 LRA crisis tracker security brief at a press conference in the Ugandan capital Kampala.

According to the report, chaos in the CAR has “allowed the LRA to operate with little resistance” in some parts of the country, which could be a “lifeline” for LRA fugitive leader Joseph Kony.

“In 2013, LRA violence in the CAR increased to its highest point since 2010,” the report said

It added that the number of attacks and abductions by the LRA decreased in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the group also lost many of its captives in 2013.

“Sixty-two women and children, who had spent at least six months in LRA captivity, returned home in 2013 making it increasingly more difficult to sustain a large fighting force in the bush.”

The LRA is said to have split up into small groups and Kony is thought to be hiding in a place where the borders of the CAR, South Sudan, and Sudan meet.

Kony, who has been fighting the Ugandan government for over 20 years, was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in 2005 but has evaded capture.

In its long and bloody history, the LRA has mutilated civilians and abducted children to use as sex slaves, soldiers, and porters.

More than 50 instances of data breaches by Cleveland Police staff in last four years

12 Feb 2014 13:45

56 occasions when member of police staff - including officers and civilians - had broken data protection laws between January 2009 and October 2013

Cleveland Police saw more than 50 instances of data breaches by members of its staff in the last four years.

Figures show that there were 56 occasions when a member of police staff - including officers and civilians - had broken data protection laws between January 2009 and October 2013.

The figures were released by Cleveland Police through a Freedom of Information request.

Detective Superintendent Jon Green is head of the Professional Standards Department at Cleveland Police.

He said: “Cleveland Police takes any unlawful disclosure of any personal information very seriously and works closely with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) when appropriate to do so, taking whatever steps possible to prevent the extent of any further disclosure once it is discovered.

“We also pro-actively monitor our compliance with the Data Protection Act and ensure that our staff’s access to police systems is done so lawfully and with a legitimate purpose – if this is found not to be the case either criminal or internal disciplinary action is always considered.”

Last month it was claimed that former police officer Wayne Scott - jailed in December for a number of sickening sex offences including rape - used police computer systems to find the personal details of 31 women. The allegations were apparently written in confidential police documents handed to ITV News.

An Independent Police Complaints Commission investigation is already ongoing into the police handling of the Scott case.

And now an internal investigation is also under way into how the documents were leaked.

Nationally hundreds of police staff, including high-ranking officers, have been censured for breaching data protection laws.

Javed Khan, chief executive of Victim Support, said: “It is very worrying to think that the personal data of victims of crime - who are often extremely vulnerable - might be being accessed and used inappropriately by people in a position of trust.

“Victims rightly expect that their privacy and the information they give will be respected when they report a crime.”

Review: Frank Turner at the Phones 4u Arena, Manchester

12 Feb 2014 12:41

Who'd have thought Frank Turner's brand of English folk rock would fit so well in such huge, impersonal surroundings?

Frank Turner

Who'd have thought it, Frank Turner playing the nation's enormo-domes?

And who'd have thought his brand of English folk rock would fit so well in such huge, impersonal surroundings?

For someone who is essentially a cult act – mention his name to friends and more often than not you'll get a blank look - Turner has a huge audience these days and one that is largely under-30.

On stage he revealed his show in Manchester was, for a few days at least, the second biggest headline gig of his career.

And while the huge arena wasn't full, an impressively large crowd witnessed a stunning performance from Turner and his outstanding band the Sleeping Souls.

A consummate showman, the Wessex Boy forged his act and reputation in the white hot atmosphere of clubs and pubs, building a word-of-mouth following that is fiercely loyal and continually growing.

The band gave their all on stage and the crowd responded ecstatically, singing along lustily from start to finish.

Turner's new material, culled from his latest album Tape Deck Heart, blended well with 'classics' like opener Photosynthesis.

In fact, the night's highlights included Plain Sailing Weather, Losing Days, Polaroid Picture and Recovery – all recent songs.

On the chorus of the latter, the arena floor was turned into a seething, bouncing mass of humanity.

But there was also room in the set for crowd favourites like Reasons Not To Be An Idiot, The Road, If I Ever Stray, I Knew Prufrock Before He Was Favourite and I Still Believe.

One of the biggest cheers of the night, though, was reserved for Turner's announcement that he would be touring the UK again later this year so catch him if you can.

Watch: Would-be bank robber is foiled by Halifax branch security

12 Feb 2014 12:16

VIDEO: Man claimed to have a gun after walking into the bank's Middlesbrough branch last month

This is the moment the security at Middlesbrough's Halifz branch foiled a would-be 'armed' robber.

The man - claiming to be armed with a gun - was caught on CCTV camera as he tried to rob the Linthorpe Road branch.

The attempted robbery happened last month but Cleveland Police have now released the dramatic footage.

It shows the man, who was wearing dark clothing including a hooded jacket, walking into the Linthorpe Road branch on January 23.

He is seen going up to the cashier’s desk and handing over a note.

The note stated that he wanted money and that he had a gun in his Tesco carrier bag.

Staff immediately raised the alarm and the man then fled empty-handed, running from the building.

No-one was injured during the robbery attempt and although he claimed to have a gun in his carrier bag no weapon was seen.

Police believed that some witnesses could have seen a commotion in the bank and left before realising what was happening.

Officers conducted local area searches for the man and a team of detectives launched an investigation.

Customers arriving at the branch found a sign in the window saying it was closed due to a “serious incident”.

Officers appealed to anyone who was in the bank at the time or who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area.

Anyone with information or who knows who may be responsible is asked to contact Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Your Daily Muslim: Aaron Yoon

Korean-Canadian Aaron Yoon didn’t seem like the type to ever be charged with a terror-related offense. The teen had a close group of friends, and was raised Catholic. However, that all changed when one of his friends reached out to him about Islam. Soon, Yoon had started avoiding homework (dispelling racial stereotypes in the process) and instead spent his time studying the 7th-century child porn fairytale known as the Qur’an. Little did he know, he would soon end up inside a Mauritanian prison cell.

In 2007, Yoon and two of his Muslim friends rented a condo together. Cue the obvious #gayporn4muhammad reference. However, the trio was evicted due to noise issues as well as damage they were causing to the property. Apparently worshiping an invisible psychopath causes people to act out violently; who’da thunk it?!

In 2010, Yoon traveled to Mauritania to allegedly study the Qur’an and learn Arabic. His BFFs soon joined him. However, Mauritian authorities discovered he was linked to a terror group in 2011 and split the trio up indefinitely. While in prison, Yoon was tortured repeatedly. Eventually, he confessed that his intent was to join al Qaeda in nearby Mali. His friends took part in Mokhtar Belmokhtar‘s Algerian gas plant terror attack, and were both killed. Regardless, Yoon was released early and was deported back to Canada, where he did not face any charges. He is currently attending a mosque, where even mosque leaders are vouching for his innocence. I highly doubt he is innocent. Why would he travel overseas, meet up with two jihadists, and get arrested on unrelated evidence of being in a terror group if he were actually innocent?! There may not have been enough evidence to convict Yoon under Canadian law, but the court of public opinion has a different verdict.

Coach Steve Butler believes Tees Valley Mohawks side can challenge for play-off glory

Butler is still tipping his side for honours despite being knocked out of the National Trophy by Reading Rockets

Tees Valley Mohawks coach Steve Butler

Coach Steve Butler still believes his Tees Valley Mohawks side can challenge for play-off glory despite being knocked out of the National Trophy.

Butler’s men were given a reprieve in the competition after quarter-final conquerors Nassa Neptunes were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

But they were denied a second successive place in the final when they lost 90-66 away to Reading Rockets, who had also beaten them in the EBL National League Division One the previous weekend.

Mohawks travelled to Berkshire with a full squad and with hopes of causing an upset against last season’s league and play-off champions who recently added the National Cup to their silverware collection.

And they started brightly with Jerome Narcisse scoring the first four points of the game as the teams tested each other’s defences.

But with five minutes gone Reading went 10-7 up and it was a lead they held onto throughout the game.

Mohawks had no answer to Reading’s next five minutes as they went on a 20-6 run to finish the first quarter in control at 30-13.

The second quarter went from bad to worse for the visitors and Reading opened a yawning 25-point advantage at one stage before a a late rally reduced the lead to 16 points.

Butler told his side he expected better in the second half and quick baskets from Jorge Ebanks, Alex Greven and Acho Anyigbo cut the gap further to 10 points.

Mohawks were back on track but a quick time-out by Reading refocused them and they soon found their range again.

The Mohawks tide was stemmed as the home side increased their lead to 20 points at the end of the third period.

The fourth quarter saw teams trade baskets so, although they were scoring, Mohawks couldn’t reduce the deficit and Reading ran out comfortable winners to head to their second final of the season so far.

“We were beaten by a better team,” conceded Butler.

“They started well and we couldn’t get back into the game.

“We made a run early in the second half but Josh Wilcher and the Reading team made some big shots and extended their lead.

“We didn’t play to our best ability. It was not through want of trying or not giving 100% but it showed why Reading are National Cup champions.

“I believe they are a few steps ahead of every team in the league and have such strength in depth they will be very hard to beat.”

Mohawks get back to league action in a tough double header away this weekend against league leaders Hemel Hempstead and third-placed Essex Leopards.

“We have got to get back to playing tough defence, and team offence,” said Butler.

“I am confident that my squad can challenge at the end of the season for the play- offs and league.”

Mohawks II also tasted defeat, losing 96-85 at home to table toppers Northants Thunder in Division Three (North).

Teesside darts player destined to take world title - Paul Jennings

37-year-old winner of six international tournaments said there is plenty of world-title winning potential in the region

Glen Durrant (main image) is among the rising stars of world darts and could eventually become world champion, says Paul Jennings (inset)

Paul Jennings believes it could only be a matter of time before a Teesside-area player wins the Lakeside world title.

Hartlepool’s Jennings and Milton Keynes-based Cleveland thrower Fallon Sherrock underlined the region’s darting strength by reaching the men’s and women’s semi-finals at the inaugural BDO World Trophy at Blackpool Tower Ballroom over the weekend.

And rising Middlesbrough star Glen Durrant did little wrong as he lost 6-5 in the standout first round match to Peterlee left hander Dave Prins, missing three darts to win an exhilarating encounter which featured 47-ton plus scores.

Hartlepool veteran Tony Eccles failed to make it though qualifying at the new Daily Mirror-sponsored and Eurosport-televised BDO event, but is a seasoned top level campaigner and two-time Lakeside quarter-finalist like Jennings.

And the 37-year-old winner of six international tournaments said there is plenty of world-title winning potential in the region.

“I’ve always felt I have the game to win the Lakeside,” Jennings said.

“I beat the same players that you see on TV on the circuit week in, week out. It’s just a matter of doing it when you’re up on stage.

“Glen is a good friend and I’ve always said to him that he is just waiting to be champion.

“Any time he loses a game I text him to say not to let it bother him, because he really is that good.

“And I’ve always said that Fallon is a world champion in waiting.

“She is an unbelievable player who doesn’t have any nerves, and Tony’s record speaks for itself. He is a great player.”

Jennings recovered from his disappointing 3-0 first round defeat to Wesley Harms at this year’s Lakeside with his semi-final run in Blackpool.

He beat Aiba Katsuya from Japan 6-2, Czech player Karel Sedlacek 7-2 and Scott Mitchell 10-8 before losing 11-2 to eventual champion Jamie Wilson.

Huddersfield’s Wilson beat Scottish captain Ross Montgomery 13-11 in the final.

“I hadn’t played well for a few months, and whatever I tried against Wesley at the Lakeside didn’t work,” he added. But I’m really pleased overall with the way I played in Blackpool.

“The Japanese lad was at the WDF World Cup in Canada. Karel beat Robbie Green 6-1 in the first round and Scott is right on form at the moment.

“Jamie played really well but I got tortured by the Yorkshire crowd.

“They were shouting ‘miss’ when I was going for doubles. Credit to Jamie, he asked for order during the match and there are no excuses from me.

“You’ve got to be professional and get on with, it and hopefully I can turn the corner now.”

Wonderkid Sherrock, 19, saw her World Trophy bid end in a 6-1 defeat to 2014 Lakeside women’s champion Lisa Ashton, who went on to lose the final on a tie-break to triple world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova.

And Durrant is staying upbeat after missed darts at double eight, four and two cost him dear.

“I’d won my last eight matches against Prins, but I’ve watched it on YouTube and I didn’t do a lot wrong,” he said.

“No matter how much you practice, it doesn’t compare with being up there and throwing for the match.

“Your arm turns to lead and you can’t feel your legs, but hopefully that will come with experience.”

Jennings and Durrant are back on the oche at this weekend’s Scottish Open in Renfrewshire.

UKIP leader Nigel Farage blasts 'dirty' Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election

12 Feb 2014 10:59

Claims of verbal abuse and criminal damage

UKIP leader Nigel Farage

UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage has complained of verbal abuse and criminal damage against his supporters in the Wythenshawe and Sale East by-election campaign, which he said had been “as dirty as they come”.

Mr Farage said the level of abuse directed at Ukip workers by people who he claimed were activists from Labour and the British National Party had been so high that police had been called four times.

He said the party’s offices had been vandalised with foul-mouthed graffiti branding Ukip “Nazis”, and a generator and bundles of leaflets were stolen, and claimed that individuals wearing red rosettes shouted at pensioners who said they were voting for Ukip.

Voting takes place tomorrow in the by-election to choose a replacement for Labour MP Paul Goggins, who died last month. Polls suggest Labour is heading for a comfortable victory, with Ukip hoping to snatch second place from the Conservatives.

Writing in The Independent, the Ukip leader claimed that Labour and the BNP behaved as if they “owned” certain sections of the working-class. He claimed council house residents were told to take down Ukip posters, because they should not be displayed on “our houses”.

“This is a situation which political parties should be ashamed of,” said Mr Farage. “People fought and died for our liberty and democracy and we must not ever allow politics to be tainted by such poor and in some cases criminal behaviour, where free and fair campaigning is distorted by threats of violence and damage.

“It is something that particularly emanates from the left. Far from being the party of the people, the party of the workers, the party of the ordinary men and women of the UK, the left wing risks - particularly at grassroots levels - becoming a movement that uses the sort of bullying it feigns to oppose in big business and among the elite.”

A Labour Party spokesman said: ``Nigel Farage's wild accusations are nonsense and a desperate smear to distract attention from the issues. Ukip are silent on Wythenshawe Hospital and offer no answers for the people of Wythenshawe and Sale East.''
