Adam Clayton: 'Trying to stay in this league is nervy - being at the top is exciting'

Adam Clayton insists Boro are as good as anyone in the Championship and have what it takes to win promotion.

However, the all-action midfielder believes the players can’t look beyond Saturday’s televised six-pointer against Ipswich Town.

Clayton is enjoying the promotion battle, though, especially as he was battling to keep Huddersfield in the Championship 12 months ago.

“It’s exciting and I’m glad we are involved in it,” he said.

“I think we would have taken this at the start of the season – joint top of the league with 10 games to go - so let’s enjoy it and let’s see what we can do.

“I played the last game of last season trying to stay in the league and that’s nervy, this isn’t nervy, this is exciting.

“Worst case scenario you’re doing what you’re doing now, playing in the Championship. Best case scenario you are playing in the best league in the world so it’s exciting really.

“We’ve just got to knuckle down. We’ve got 10 games to go to win the games and get up.”

Boro are currently fourth in the table, level on 66 points with leaders Bournemouth, second-placed Derby and Watford, in third.

Clayton naturally wants to achieve automatic promotion but knows the club may have to go up the hard way if required and win the play-off final.

“It’s about getting promoted, that’s the message from the staff,” he said.

“We just want to get promoted and if we have to go to a play-off final and win a play-off final then I would be more than happy to do that.

“If we can't get top two I would be more than happy with that.

“The goal is top two because we are in a very good position and we have just as good a chance to get in the Premier League automatically.

“On the flip side if you don’t get in the top two you can’t be too disappointed because you’ve got to go into the play-off situation.

“But our aim, like another six teams in the league, is to get up automatically.

“If I’m being honest, did I think we would go up automatically at the start of the season? Maybe not.

“But as the season has gone on I think we have got as good a team as any in the league, as the table shows, so let’s all be excited about where we are.

“We have 10 games to go, we are joint top of the league so I think we have as good a chance as anyone.”

Boro have confirmed Ryan Fredericks suffered a slight hamstring strain at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The right-back is unlikely to feature at the weekend as a result, with Emilio Nsue favourite to deputise.

Qatar to build 1,000 Gaza housing units

Qatar to build 1,000 housing units in Gaza

A Qatari envoy on Tuesday announced plans to build 1,000 housing units in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

“The building of 1,000 housing units comes as part of a $1-billion donation towards the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip,” Mohamed al-Amadi, the head of a Qatari committee on Gaza reconstruction, told a press conference.

He said the donation was part of $5.4 billion pledged by international donors for rebuilding the devastated Gaza Strip following a 51-day Israeli offensive last summer.

Amadi said the construction materials needed for the project would be allowed through the strip’s Israeli-controlled border crossings.

Qatar signed a trilateral agreement with Egypt and Gaza in 2013 to fund housing and infrastructure projects in Gaza worth a total of $500 million.

Last November, Israeli authorities allowed Qatari-funded construction supplies to enter the Gaza Strip through the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing.

The move came after Egypt sealed the Rafah border with Gaza following the ouster of elected President Mohamed Morsi by the army in mid-2013.

Ignoring the 9/11 Commission’s Warnings

the_9-11_commission_report The threats posed by terrorist organizations to the safety and security of America and Americans continue to grow.

Congress just voted to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security even as it is gearing up to provide millions of illegal aliens with temporary lawful status and official identity documents without in-person interviews- violating commonsense, making a mockery of our legal immigration system and violating the findings and recommendations of the 9/11 Commission. We will revisit this issue later in this article.

The Nigeria-based terror organization Boko Haram has pledged allegiance to ISIS as both terrorist groups continue to expand through the Middle East and north Africa. This apparent development was reported in the Fox News report, “Boko Haram swears formal allegiance to ISIS” that was published on March 8, 2015.

Meanwhile terrorists continue to increase their efforts to recruit new members in European countries. On February 13, 2015 Fox News in association with AP published a report, “6 men of Chechen origin face terror charges in France; said to help recruit jihadis for Syria” that reported on how individuals from terror-sponsoring countries and regions are using the lawful immigration system to enter European countries for nefarious purposes- to recruit terrorists and perhaps, carry out attacks in the countries willing to admit them.

For the United States the issue of Europeans being recruited by terror organizations raise the issue of the way that visas are issued and how, increasingly, aliens from an ever growing list of countries are no longer required to apply for a visa before seeking to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program.

It is worth noting that the U.S. Visa Waiver Program puts a premium on terror recruits in Europe and a handful of other countries that participate in this program. Eliminating the visa requirement for the citizens of these countries make them particularly appealing to ISIS and other terrorist organizations that ultimately want to attack the United States.

On May 18, 2004, I testified before a hearing conducted by the House Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security and Claims on the topic: “PUSHING THE BORDER OUT ON ALIEN SMUGGLING: NEW TOOLS AND INTELLIGENCE INITIATIVES.”

There is a bit of a “back story” concerning that hearing. Democrat Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas was preparing to conduct a hearing into alien smuggling and I was asked to possibly participate in that hearing as a witness. I made the case for including visa fraud as an issue to be considered during that hearing. What most folks, including our politicians seem to not realize is that those who facilitate the entry of aliens into the United States in violation of our immigration laws do not only help such aliens to enter the United States without inspection but may also engage in enabling aliens who intend to work illegally or, perhaps, have far more nefarious goals in mind for coming to the United States to secure visas to enter the United States via the legal system.

Ultimately Ms Jackson Lee agreed with my proposal that the hearing include visa fraud and I was happy to testify at that hearing.

On May 11, 2006 I testified at a hearing conducted by the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations of the Committee on International Relations on the topic, “VISA OVERSTAYS:CAN WE BAR THE TERRORIST DOOR?”

This hearing examined a number of issues ranging from the routine enforcement of our immigration laws from within the interior of the United States including locating and arresting aliens who overstayed their temporary (non-immigrant) visas or otherwise violating their terms of admission into the United States and the impact that the Visa Waiver Program has on these issues.

A properly administered visa process can offer a significant layer of security- in essence, pushing America’s borders out to the U.S. embassies and consulates where visas are issued. However, when aliens are able to apply for admission into the United States under the auspices of the Visa Waiver Program, we no only lose that important layer of security but also miss other benefits that such an effective visa program can provide.

I have compiled a list of the six ways in which the visa process can be helpful to law enforcement and bolster our nation’s efforts to prevent the entry of aliens whose presence on our country may prove harmful to our nation and our citizens. Under the Visa Waiver Program, not one of these important benefits applies:

1By requiring visas of aliens who seek to enter the United States, this process helps to screen potential passengers on airliners that are destined to the United States.

2The CBP inspectors are supposed to make a decision in one minute or less as to the admissibility of an alien seeking to enter the United States. The visa requirement helps them to do a more effective job. There’s is a tough job I can certainly relate to, I began my career at the former INS as an immigration inspector at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and worked there for four years before I became a special agent.

3The application for a nonimmigrant visa contains roughly 40 questions that could provide invaluable information to law enforcement officials should that alien become the target of a criminal or terrorist investigation. The information could provide intelligence as well as investigative leads. You can check out the application for a nonimmigrant (tourist) visa by clicking on this link:

4If an alien applicant lies on the application for a visa that lie is called “visa fraud.” The maximum penalty for visa fraud starts out at 10 years in jail for those who commit this crime simply in order to come to the United States, ostensibly to seek unlawful employment or other such purpose. The penalty increases to 15 years in jail for those aliens who obtain a visa to commit a felony. For aliens who engage in visa fraud to traffic in narcotics or commit another narcotics-related crime, the maximum jail sentence that can be imposes rises to 20 years. Finally, when an alien can be proven to have engaged in visa fraud in furtherance of terrorism, the maximum penalty climbs to 25 years in prison. It is important to note that while it may be difficult to prove that an individual is a terrorist, it is usually relatively simple to prove that the alien has committed visa fraud when there is fraud involved in the visa application. Indeed, terror suspects are often charged with visa fraud.

5The charge of visa fraud can also be extremely helpful to law enforcement authorities who want to take a “bad guy” off the street without tipping their hand to the other members of a criminal conspiracy or terrorism conspiracy that the individual arrested was being arrested for his involvement in terrorism or a criminal organization. An alien who commits visa fraud can be arrested and prosecuted for that violation of law and not for other charges that might make it clear that the investigation underway is targeting a criminal or terrorist organization.

6Even when an alien applies for a visa and his application is denied, the application he filed remains available for law enforcement and intelligence personnel to review to seek to glean intelligence from that application.

Our government is apparently responding to the extreme pressure being brought to bear by the United States Chamber of Commerce and executives of the travel, hospitality and related industries under the auspices of a program known as the “Discover America Partnership.” That consortium has been joined by the National Retailers Federation.

On February 1, 2015 Progressives For Immigration Reform (PFIR) published my article, “Senator Addresses Immigration-Related Threat to National Security Not Related to US-Mexican Border” in which I discussed Senator Dianne Feinstein’s statements about the Visa Waiver Program.

In writing my article I quoted from a January 11, 2015 article that appeared in The Hill, a Washington-based website under the title, “Visa Waiver Program Poses Security Threat, Dem Senator Says.” Among the statements attributed to Ms Feinstein in that article was, “The visa waiver program is the Achilles heel of America.” She went on to state that “the U.S. visa waiver program poses a threat to national security by making it easier for terrorists to enter the United States.” Finally she noted, “[Terrorists] could come back from training, they go to a visa waiver country and they could come into this country.”

However, rather than calling for the termination or at least curtailment of this dangerous and wrong-headed program, she simply “urged Congress to examine the program.”

We are in the midst of a “War on Terror.” Time is not on our side and our “leaders” are moving glacially even as our adversaries who would seek to destroy our nation and our way of life are moving rapidly to seize ever more territory.

We have an administration that refuses to consider violations of our borders and immigration laws to be serious crimes and utterly ignores the threats that a lack of border security and lack of integrity to the immigration benefits program creates for national security. This failure to “connect these dots” is infuriating, yet, as I noted at the beginning of my commentary, Congress still agreed to fully fund the Department of Homeland Security even as the administration ramps up a new massive amnesty program that will provide five million or more illegal aliens with lawful status and identity documents without so much as a face-to-face interview or field investigations to seek to uncover and thus deter immigration fraud.

Consider this statement from Chapter 12 of the 9/11 Commission Report:

Terrorist Travel

More than 500 million people annually cross U.S. borders at legal entry points, about 330 million of them noncitizens. Another 500,000 or more enter illegally without inspection across America’s thousands of miles of land borders or remain in the country past the expiration of their permitted stay. The challenge for national security in an age of terrorism is to prevent the very few people who may pose overwhelming risks from entering or remaining in the United States undetected.31

In the decade before September 11, 2001, border security-encompassing travel, entry, and immigration-was not seen as a national security matter. Public figures voiced concern about the “war on drugs,” the right level and kind of immigration, problems along the southwest border, migration crises originating in the Caribbean and elsewhere, or the growing criminal traffic in humans. The immigration system as a whole was widely viewed as increasingly dysfunctional and badly in need of reform. In national security circles, however, only smuggling of weapons of mass destruction carried weight, not the entry of terrorists who might use such weapons or the presence of associated foreign-born terrorists.

For terrorists, travel documents are as important as weapons. Terrorists must travel clandestinely to meet, train, plan, case targets, and gain access to attack. To them, international travel presents great danger, because they must surface to pass through regulated channels, present themselves to border security officials, or attempt to circumvent inspection points.

In their travels, terrorists use evasive methods, such as altered and counterfeit passports and visas, specific travel methods and routes, liaisons with corrupt government officials, human smuggling networks, supportive travel agencies, and immigration and identity fraud. These can sometimes be detected.

Before 9/11, no agency of the U.S. government systematically analyzed terrorists’ travel strategies. Had they done so, they could have discovered the ways in which the terrorist predecessors to al Qaeda had been systematically but detectably exploiting weaknesses in our border security since the early 1990s.

We found that as many as 15 of the 19 hijackers were potentially vulnerable to interception by border authorities. Analyzing their characteristic travel documents and travel patterns could have allowed authorities to intercept 4 to 15 hijackers and more effective use of information available in U.S. government databases could have identified up to 3 hijackers.32

Looking back, we can also see that the routine operations of our immigration laws-that is, aspects of those laws not specifically aimed at protecting against terrorism-inevitably shaped al Qaeda’s planning and opportunities. Because they were deemed not to be bona fide tourists or students as they claimed, five conspirators that we know of tried to get visas and failed, and one was denied entry by an inspector. We also found that had the immigration system set a higher bar for determining whether individuals are who or what they claim to be-and ensuring routine consequences for violations-it could potentially have excluded, removed, or come into further contact with several hijackers who did not appear to meet the terms for admitting short-term visitors.33

Our investigation showed that two systemic weaknesses came together in our border system’s inability to contribute to an effective defense against the 9/11 attacks: a lack of well-developed counterterrorism measures as a part of border security and an immigration system not able to deliver on its basic commitments, much less support counterterrorism. These weaknesses have been reduced but are far from being overcome.

Recommendation: Targeting travel is at least as powerful a weapon against terrorists as targeting their money. The United States should combine terrorist travel intelligence, operations, and law enforcement in a strategy to intercept terrorists, find terrorist travel facilitators, and constrain terrorist mobility.

The 9/11 Commission could not be clearer on the nexus between immigration and terrorism. Yet precious few leaders in either political party are willing to step up and make the enforcement of our immigration laws a priority. Indeed, leaders from both parties are willing to make a mockery of our laws and our borders that serve as our first line of defense and last line of defense of a growing army of international terrorists who clearly have our nation and our citizens in their sights.

In case you missed these two brief paragraphs- here they are again:

For terrorists, travel documents are as important as weapons. Terrorists must travel clandestinely to meet, train, plan, case targets, and gain access to attack. To them, international travel presents great danger, because they must surface to pass through regulated channels, present themselves to border security officials, or attempt to circumvent inspection points.

In their travels, terrorists use evasive methods, such as altered and counterfeit passports and visas, specific travel methods and routes, liaisons with corrupt government officials, human smuggling networks, supportive travel agencies, and immigration and identity fraud. These can sometimes be detected.

In a manner of speaking, our “leaders” are willing to arm our enemies with travel documents and the ability to acquire new identities to conceal their movements as they go about their deadly preparations.

ISIS should give these advocates for massive amnesty programs the MVP Award for facilitating their deadly preparations.

George Santayana, the 20th Century philosopher said, “If we do not learn from the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat them.”

UK rich-poor divide further agape: Report

UK rich-poor divide further agape: Report

A report says UK’s wealth gap has dramatically widened, as the rich are 64% richer and the poor 57% poorer. (File photo)

Britain’s wealth gap has dramatically widened in the past decade, with the rich becoming 64 percent more well-off and the poor getting 57 percent poorer, a think tank reveals.

The Social Market Foundation released on Tuesday a report which analyzed the changing earnings and saving of thousands of Britons between 2005 and 2012-13.

The think tank said the wealth among the top 20 percent grew as they were able to set aside more money as a buffer, with average savings and investments of around £10,000 in 2012-13, compared with £6,000 prior to the recession several years ago.

This is while the poorest 20 percent have seen their net wealth fall by 57 percent from £120 per person in 2005 to zero in 2012-13. The findings also showed that the poorest owe 45 percent more money than what they did seven years ago.

The think tank called for more support to those with lower incomes and those who are within the younger age groups to help them save more. However, it also admitted that the task is a challenging one, “especially for those with little income to spare once necessities have been paid for.”

The foundation also said that the declining financial help for those on low incomes and younger workers limited the British economy’s ability to rely for financial growth on consumer spending among all income groups. It warned that these two groups are ill-prepared for any future financial changes or interest rates.

Meanwhile, analysts believe that Britain will see the wage gap grow even more in the next 15 years.

A separate study released by the think tank Fabian Society on February 25 stated that the earning of high-income households in the UK will rise 11 times faster than for low-income families by 2030. This is while the real disposable income of British middle-income households will rise by nine percent. For low-income groups, the rise will be a mere two percent.

The current UK Tory-led coalition government launched austerity measures when it came to power in 2010 in a bid to tackle the country’s mounting debt and sluggish growth. The cuts have severely hit the poorest households in the country, forcing many of them to choose between paying for food or energy.

State Senator Michael Willette has made an apology after sending an online post saying that US President Barack Obama is part of the ISIL terrorist group.

The Maine state senator was criticized for sharing a photo of Obama on his Facebook earlier this month.

“Why haven’t I done anything about ISIS (ISIL)? Because I’ll deal with them at the family reunion,” according to the caption of the photo.

On Monday, the Maine Republican apologized for sharing the post and called it an “error in judgment.”

“I apologize for posting this on Facebook. Like too many people these days, I fell into the trap of posting something first and then thinking later. It was an error in judgment,” Willette said.

Maine Democratic Party Chairman Phil Bartlett expressed his disappointment over the post.

He urged the Maine Republican Party to condemn the action.

“His post is offensive and perpetuates a false religious and ethnic slur at a time when our state and country should come together,” Bartlett said.

President Obama’s foreign policy regarding the terror network has been criticized by the Republican Party over the past months.

The United States has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL targets in Iraq and Syria since last year.

IS militants execute 28 in Iraq, Libya

kirkuk_0.jpg

KIRKUK, Iraq/TRIPOLI, Libya: Islamic State jihadists have executed 28 people in Iraq and Libya, authorities said on Monday. Twenty of the victims were killed because they wanted to fight against them in the northern Iraqi province of Kirkuk, an Iraqi police official said.

The killings of the men, who wanted to join anti-IS paramilitary forces known as Popular Mobilization units, took place in the town of Hawijah, a police intelligence officer and two local officials said. The executions could not be independently confirmed, but a gruesome series of photos posted online and shared on social media are evidence that they took place. The photos show the bodies of more than a dozen different men strung by their feet from light poles, what appears to be a communications or electricity tower, and under a massive sign featuring the IS flag and name.

Captions under the photos said the men were members of the Popular Mobilization units and used a derogatory term that could either refer to the units’ Shiite leadership, or indicate that the men were believed to be Shiites. IS spearheaded a sweeping offensive last June that overran large parts of the country north and west of Baghdad, including in Kirkuk province.

Security forces backed by militia are battling to regain ground, with support from a US-led coalition and Iran. The Popular Mobilization units — which are dominated by Shiite militia groups but also include other volunteers, including Sunnis — have played a key role in the anti-IS fight, shoring up the government’s flagging troops

Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson suspended by BBC after 'fracas' with producer

The BBC has suspended Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson "following a fracas" with a producer.

The presenter has lurched from controversy to controversy in recent months - offending foreign diplomats, viewers, MPs and his own bosses at the BBC.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "Following a fracas with a BBC producer, Jeremy Clarkson has been suspended pending an investigation.

"No one else has been suspended. Top Gear will not be broadcast this Sunday. The BBC will be making no further comment at this time."

This Sunday's episode was set to feature Clarkson with co-hosts Richard Hammond and James May getting to grips with classic cars such as a Fiat 124 Spider, an MGB GT and a Peugeot 304 Cabriolet.

They were set to take to the road and end up at a classic track day, while Gary Lineker was the "star in a reasonably priced car".

Clarkson was put on what was called his final warning last year following a racism row after claims he used the n-word while reciting the nursery rhyme Eeny, Meeny, Miny Moe during filming of the BBC2 programme.

In recent years he has been cleared of breaching the broadcasting code by watchdog Ofcom after comparing a Japanese car to people with growths on their faces and faced a storm of protest from mental health charities after branding people who throw themselves under trains as "selfish".

He was also forced to apologise for telling BBC1's The One Show that striking workers should be shot, but it is the claims of racism that have really damaged his standing with the corporation.

Top Gear is one of the BBC's biggest moneyspinners - pulling in millions of pounds from an devoted - and international - audience.

Its latest series was given a global launch with a simultaneous broadcast in more than 50 countries.

Its success - and Clarkson's vital part in it - saw BBC TV boss Danny Cohen compare him to a top-flight footballer, telling reporters last year that "no-one is bigger than the club".

Last year, the show was censored by Ofcom for breaching broadcasting rules after Clarkson used a "racial" term during the programme's Burma special, which had aired in March 2014.

The year ended with the motoring show's crew forced to flee Argentina after trouble erupted when it emerged they were using a Porsche with the registration number H982 FKL, which some people suggested could refer to the Falklands conflict of 1982.

But each episode in the two-part Christmas special attracted more than seven million viewers last year, with a further three million for each episode on iPlayer.

Top Gear's executive producer Andy Wilman described last year as "an annus horribilis" for the show after the claims of racism and the near-riot in Argentina.

Clarkson has so far remained silent about the suspension on his Twitter feed.

His last tweets were on Sunday, when he wrote: "It's an old skool Top Gear tonight. Nobody falls over and no-one is fired by cannon into a hospital. I'd watch something else frankly."

He added: "God. Crufts is good."

Jonathon Taylor: Boro will slip up a couple more times yet - but it won't prove fatal

More than 2,300 Boro fans have taken part in our poll that maps out the club's remaining fixtures.

We want to see how confident Boro fans are that their team will go on and win promotion with our ten to go survey.

Using the poll below you can predict the outcome of Boro 's remaining games, starting at home to Ipswich on Saturday, and also give us your guess on how the top six will look come full time on May 2.

The survey will stay open until 12pm on Wednesday.

It's amazing how quickly fans' confidence can be sapped after a few bad results.

It's understandable, but despite quick-fire defeats to Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, I don't think there's any need for Boro fans to worry.

Every team in the Championship has a bad run or a few suspect results.

Derby squandering two points against Birmingham, Norwich losing to Wigan, Bournemouth beaten at Leeds and Brentford. It's nothing new.

I don't think Boro have been playing particularly badly recently.

Aitor Karanka's side carved out plenty of chances against Leeds, and then against Nottingham Forest it was a game of very fine margins. They deserved a point.

Sheffield Wednesday's Atdhe Nuhiu scores Wednesday's opening goal

It was only at Hillsborough that Boro badly underperformed - and I don't think the pitch or the 3-5-2 helped that.

So it's prediction time - and although I think Boro will slip up a couple more times, I don't think it will be fatal. I reckon Karanka's men will finish second if they can win six of their last 10 matches.

I predict 20 points out of the last 30.

James Dowling: Man known as the 'Stockton smiler' took own life - inquest hears

A man known as the “Stockton smiler” took his own life, an inquest has found.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral of John James Dowling, known as “Fatty” to his friends, held at Stockton Parish Church in January.

The 24-year-old from Oxbridge in Stockton died three days after Christmas.

Tributes poured in for the “one in a million mate” who “didn’t have a bad bone in his body”.

VIEW GALLERY

The former Ian Ramsey School pupil was “an ordinary 24-year-old living at home with his parents”, said his sister Sarah Louise Dowling in a statement read out at Teesside Coroner’s Court at an inquest held into the cause of his death.

Mr Dowling didn’t have a job but made a living selling horses and carts, his sister said.

“The family misses him very much and are finding it hard to come to terms with his death,” she said.

She said Mr Dowling had split from his girlfriend of six years last spring and the family was “aware of how upset he was” but felt he was “keeping up appearances”.

Clare Bailey, acting senior coroner for Teesside, also read out a statement by Mr Dowling’s best friend Samuel John Webb who saw him the night before he died on December 28.

He said his friend had “seemed a bit down” in the week leading up to his death but Mr Dowling had not talked about it.

After spending the evening chatting and drinking, he left Mr Webb’s house to walk home about 2-3am on the Sunday.

Mr Webb said his friend’s death had come as a “total shock” to him.

Mr Dowling was found in the garage of the family home by his parents and sister.

Ms Bailey said a toxicology report found that Mr Dowling had the equivalent of five pints of beer or 12 measures of spirits in his system as well as cocaine and low levels of prescription drugs.

She said the medical cause of death was hanging and ruled that Mr Dowling had killed himself.

Marske sisters prepare for Nepal charity trek in memory of their mum

For two Marske sisters, Mother’s Day this year will be all about remembering the woman who has inspired them to take on a challenge of a lifetime.

Hayley Hodgson and Rachael Watson were devastated when their mum, Olwen Stewart, passed away last year aged only 62.

Olwen, who was also mum to Melanie Stewart, 42, was rushed to hospital after collapsing but despite returning home she tragically died two weeks after taking ill as a result of heart disease.

Wanted to focus on something positive following their mother’s death, the pair decided to take part in a charity trek in Nepal this Novemeber to raise money for the Teesside Hospice.

Hayley, 30, who is mum to Riley, six, and Caoimhe, two, said: “I saw it as a challenge and something inspiring to do.

“I am just a busy mum and I needed something to spur me on.

“I am really excited for it and to do something together as sisters in our mother’s memory.”

Sisters Rachael Watson (left) and Hayley Hodgson who plan to take part in a charity trek through Nepal to raise money for Teesside Hospice in memory of their mum, Olwen Stewart Sisters Rachael Watson (left) and Hayley Hodgson who plan to take part in a charity trek through Nepal to raise money for Teesside Hospice in memory of their mum, Olwen Stewart

Rachael, 27, who is mum to Freddie, one, said: “Mum would probably think we were daft but she would think it was great that we are doing it for a good cause that she supported.

“Mum’s life was cut short so we want to make the most of ours.”

The pair have been training regularly in preparation for the 50 kilometre trek. During a 12 day period, the pair will travel the country of Nepal and experience temperatures between five and 25 degrees celsius. They will spend a total of five days trekking, experiencing altitudes up to 3,400 metres and they will spend two days volunteering at a local charity.

So far, with money still to be added to their funds, Hayley and Rachael have raised about £2,000 between them. However, they need to raise at least £3,300 each in sponsorship ahead of the charity trek.

As well as holding sponsored walks, the sisters have gone back to basics with their everyday spending in an attempt to try and reach their sponsorship pledge.

They are also planning to hold a sponsored walk to Whitby and another at Scafell Pike in the Lake District.

Cleveland police officers who were forced to retire early, appeal for compensation

Almost 50 former Cleveland Police officers forced to retire early under a controversial cost-cutting rule are seeking compensation.

In total 55 officers have retired from Cleveland Police since 2010 under the A19 regulation.

And now it has now emerged 49 of them are seeking a payout as they await the outcome of a pivotal age discrimination case.

The 55 officers were made to leave the force after 30 years’ service under the rule, which was used by 15 forces to make savings.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said the force is no longer using the A19 rule.

Figures released to the BBC from a Freedom of Information request showed that in total 1,335 officers were made to leave their jobs under the rule across England and Wales. Of those 1,086 are seeking compensation.

Regulation A19 gives chief constables the power to compel an officer with full pensionable service to retire.

Invoking the rule saved the forces more than £66m in wages, it has been reported.

More than 800 of the claims were made after February 2014, when officers from five forces won an age discrimination claim.

Pension lump sums paid to the retired officers in England and Wales topped £157m, according to the figures.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: “Cleveland Police, along with a number of other forces made use of regulation A19 in order to secure reductions in officer numbers that became necessary following the Comprehensive Spending Review in 2010.

“The application of regulation A19 was not universally well accepted, with some officers subject of the regulation leaving forces earlier than they may have intended, however, each of the officers retired under regulation A19 did receive their full pension.

“In total, 55 officers were retired under regulation A19 having completed 30 years pensionable service. 49 officers have lodged claims against the forces’ application of regulation A19. These claims are currently stayed until the outcome of the pending appeal is known.

“The force is not currently applying regulation A19 and is now actively involved in the recruitment of new police officers.”

Cleveland Police has been hit by huge budget cuts over the last decade. The force had to make £24m cuts by 2014 and then it was told to make a further £4.8m of savings.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: “Police reform is working and crime has fallen by more than a fifth since 2010, according to the Independent Crime Survey for England and Wales.

“While we acknowledge that the police funding settlement is challenging, Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has found the police are successfully meeting the challenge of balancing their books while protecting the frontline and delivering reductions in crime.

“It is for chief officers, working with Police and Crime Commissioners, to take operational decisions about the use of resources, including whether the use of Regulation A19 is appropriate for their force.”

Grand Mufti: IS ‘in direct violation of Islamic principles’

Grand Mufti: IS ‘in direct violation of Islamic principles’

The Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh stressed that IS does not represent Sunni beliefs and values due to its corrupt practices in direct violation of the principles of Islam. He said Sunnis cannot be associated with the harsh behavior and killing of people, especially as IS’ interpretation of holy jihad and means to claim the caliphate are religiously unacceptable and promote bloodshed.

He warned young people against joining the group in name of religion, as the organization explicitly takes advantage of young people merely to kill for them. Al-Sheikh pointed to the brutality and unacceptability of certain acts carried out by IS, such as burning people, which he described as a great offense. He said such acts are based on false fatwas.

The mufti said Muslims and Muslim nations must act as one body to eradicate evil and corruption, noting that social media may play a big role in the exploitation of people and spread of evil. Every Muslim must exert all efforts to protect Islam and refrain from such acts, he said. Al-Sheikh called for promoting the involvement of youth in Qur’an memorization groups, which play a significant and useful role in containing the youth in summer camps supervised by the official bodies. He also urged the media to play a bigger role in spreading awareness about the harmful implications of joining such terrorist groups.

“Given that unemployment leads to delinquency, improper behavior such as smuggling, and the promotion of deviant ideas, more efforts should focus on providing more job opportunities to the youth,” he said

Boro Under-18s ready to tackle the Premier League's elite in eight-team play-off league

Boro’s Under-18s face difficult trips to Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City as they bid to become national champions.

Craig Liddle’s side were recently crowned champions of the Barclays Under-18 League Northern Division, rounding off the campaign with a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday.

Now the youngsters enter an eight-club play-off league made up of the top four from both the Northern and Southern divisions.

Every team plays each other once, with the league winner going on to compete in a European competition next season.

Yesterday the fixtures were announced, with Boro rewarded for topping the table with four home matches.

The action gets underway on Saturday as Boro travel to Everton, before home matches against Tottenham and West Brom on the following two weekends.

Boro then head to Chelsea on Saturday, April 11, before hosting Aston Villa seven days later.

The league sees Boro return to Manchester City on Saturday, May 2, before ending with a home match against Man United on Saturday, May 9.

After winning the Northern Division, Liddle admitted the youngsters have been a credit to the club this season.

“When you think of the investment made by Manchester City, Man Utd, Liverpool, Everton and Blackburn, we can be really proud of our achievements,” Liddle told the club’s website.

“Obviously at this level it’s about developing them as players and the long-term aim is to get them in the first team. But at this moment in time, to win the league is a fantastic achievement.

“This next stage will not faze our group at all. If anything it will make them even better. This is a great achievement and it is down to a lot of people who have put in a lot of hard work.”

Remember When: Former World Champion Boxer Nigel Benn visits Stockton

Former world boxing champion Nigel Benn knocked ’em out when a themed Stockton bar opened.

Charlie Tyers, owner of Charlie’s Bar on Bowesfield Industrial Estate, welcomed the former Number One fighter to greet punters and do the opening honours on November 16, 2001.

Nigel – nicknamed the Dark Destroyer – paid a visit to the boxing-themed pub along with fellow former British world boxing champion Kevin Lueshing.

The pair were given a tour of the new bar and took time out to sign autographs for fans.

The following year, in March 2002, boxing gloves signed by Nigel during the opening went under the hammer at a charity auction.

The owners decided to auction the gloves to the highest bidder to raise cash for local autistic boy, then-six-year-old Billy Price, and his sister Laura, 11, who was nominated for a Child of Achievement Award for looking after both her brother and her sick mum.

Half of the funds made from the night went to the trust, towards a computer for Billy, and the other half was to go the Beverley School for the deaf at Saltersgill, Middlesbrough.

At the opening of the bar, Nigel said he was impressed with some of the rare pictures which decorated the walls. “The place looks great, it’s certainly very lively - some of the photographs in here of me are ones that I thought only I had,” he said.

Mr Tyers said: “It’s nice to have a theme to a pub, and we wanted something different - there are lots of football-themed pubs so we went for boxing.”

As well as photos of boxing’s greatest champions, the pub also boasted a lifesize statue of Mike Tyson.

UK's first clinical trial on shoulder fractures reveals no significant difference between surgery and no surgery

A five-year study led by a Middlesbrough surgeon to determine the best treatment for a broken shoulder – surgery versus no surgery - could lead to financial savings.

Together with researchers from Teesside University and the University of York, Professor Rangan, clinical professor in trauma and orthopaedic surgery at James Cook University Hospital, secured more than £1.25m funding to lead the largest randomised clinical trial on proximal humerus (shoulder) fractures.

The results published in the international Journal of the American Medical Association, found no significant difference between having surgery compared with non-surgical treatment for the more serious types of shoulder fractures and could lead to big NHS savings.

The current treatment for the injury, in people aged over 65, involves putting the arm in a sling or surgery for the more serious fracture, but clinicians were unsure which treatment had the best outcome.

Professor Rangan, the chief investigator on the five-year project in collaboration with clinicians from 32 NHS hospitals, recruited 250 patients into the trial which was sponsored by The School of Health & Social Care at Teesside University.

Patients, who were randomly allocated to surgery or no surgery were followed up for two years with data collected at six, 12 and 24 months.

In total, 231 patients recorded and scored their own progress and experiences after treatment which showed no significant difference in self-assessed function and pain between patients with surgery and those who were allocated no surgery.

Professor Rangan said: “A broken or fractured shoulder can be a particularly painful injury and the function of the arm and shoulder can be considerably compromised - people don’t necessarily regain the independence they had before the injury.

“Some of these fractures clearly need surgery but for the majority it was not clear whether surgery was better than treating the injured arm in a sling followed by physiotherapy.

“Essentially this study was designed to find out whether one treatment was better than the other by evaluating the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of surgical versus non-surgical treatment.

“We know the use of surgery is increasing, but our trial has actually shown no significant difference between the two types of treatment which means we now have the potential to change future clinical treatment of this condition considerably.

“Also to have our paper accepted by JAMA – the Journal of the American Medical Association – is a real accolade.”

Egypt opens Gaza crossing after 2 months

GAZA CITY: Egypt temporarily opened a crossing with the Gaza Strip on Monday, allowing students, patients seeking medical care and dual nationals to leave the territory for the first time in nearly two months.

It was the first time Egypt opened the crossing since an Egyptian court last month declared Hamas a terrorist organization.

Egypt sealed the border crossing in October, citing security concerns, and has since opened it intermittently. But the crossing’s opening did not appear to signal a change in Egyptian policy.

Some 1,200 people are expected to leave Gaza through the crossing during the two-day opening.

Also Monday, Hamas condemned the arrests of 30 of its activists in the West Bank in a sweep that began Sunday night. It was the first time in months that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Palestinian Authority has rounded up so many Hamas activists.

Job losses at Thornaby offshore firm as Reef Subsea UK collapses into administration

Staff at a Thornaby offshore firm have been made redundant after administrators were called in.

Around 43 of Reef Subsea UK Limited’s 70 employees have lost their jobs.

It comes just over a month after the marine trenching firm’s Teesside operation insisted it was not in administration, following the demise of its Norwegian parent company.

Accounts for Reef Subsea UK, a separate legal entity to Norwegian-based Reef Subsea AS, show the company made a post-tax loss of £15.9m in 2013.

Administrators Dan Butters and Adrian Berry of Deloitte were appointed to Reef Subsea UK on March 3 and continue to trade the business to preserve its main contract whilst assessing options.

The pair confirmed the options included progressing interest from potential buyers.

Dan Butters said: “Following the bankruptcy of the wider group, the directors have sought to secure the survival of the business.

“These efforts are ongoing whilst the Administrators trade the business but unfortunately we have had to make a number of redundancies today in order to reduce ongoing costs. Our specialist team is supporting those employees affected.”

Last year Reef Subsea AS restructured to form three independent business — X-Subsea, Reef Power & Umbilical and Technocean Subsea.

Reef’s chairman Mel Fitzgerald was reported in the Norwegian press as saying recent market deterioration caused by low oil prices had scuppered the turnaround efforts.

Speaking to the Norwegian newspaper, Dagens Næringsliv, Mr Fitzgerald, said: “We have worked intensively in recent years to restructure the company and reduce costs and competition.

“The recent deterioration in the market has made that we have not succeeded. We have tried to find solutions together with the central shareholders, but unfortunately we have not managed to get agreement that restructures the company.”

In its 2013 accounts Reef Subsea UK said it was looking forward to becoming a “major player and market force” in 2016 and 2017, despite post-tax losses of £15.9m.

Late last year the Teesside firm announced it had completed work on the Gwynt y M̫r Offshore Wind Farm Рits largest contract to date.

In its 2013 accounts, Reef Subsea UK said the contract had been made difficult initially by poor conditions, a feature which had contributed to the significant losses.

Reef’s Stockton operation was launched in 2012 with the backing of its Norwegian group.

ISIL, Israel and cultural cleansing

ISIL, Israel and cultural cleansing

A man at Iraq's National Museum in Baghdad walks past two ancient Assyrian human-headed winged bull statues [AP]

“How on earth one manages to mention Israel when discussing #ISIS destroying #Nimrud…smh, unbelievable! @marwanbishara.”

This was one of the reactions I got to my interview about the historic context of the bulldozing of archeological sites in Iraq’s Hatra, Nimrud, and the destruction of various statues in Mosul museum by militants of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

It’s a rather predictable response from a Zionist, but it also shows how so many are in denial over their past and cannot see why the horrors in Iraq and Syria – as ugly as they might be – are neither new nor the exception.

As I mentioned during my interview on Al Jazeera, historically speaking, more than a few conquerors have attempted the same or worse when they occupied or colonised others’ lands. Whether that was the Japanese in Korea, the Germans in Poland, the Serbs in Bosnia, the Israelis in Palestine, or westerners in their colonies.

Historical facts

There’s no denying these historical facts; none that cannot be verified with a quick research.

No harm, indeed much good could come of the US, France, England, Russia, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, etc, coming to terms with the dark aspects of their past.

Some nations have acknowledged their past sins while others remain in denial. The same goes for Israel and its Zionist friends.

To their credit, some Israelis have come forward in recent years to speak out on the ethnic and cultural cleansing of Palestine.

The Israelis, known as the new or “revisionist historians”, have defied the national conventional wisdom to expose decades-long state propaganda; one that is taught in Israel as “history”.

Some of these historians have dedicated their research for setting the record straight by exposing the grave historic injustice that resulted from the premeditated or default policies of the Israel’s founders against the indigenous people, the Palestinians.

Others however, while admitting the ethnic and cultural cleaning, are ideological in their approach. They justify the malfeasant policies as necessary for the survival of the “Jewish State”. They argue that the only way to erect a Jewish state was to undo what’s been there before it, hence destroying or erasing much of the Palestinian landscape.

Reconsecration of Palestine

In his book, Sacred Landscape: The Buried History of the Holy Land Since 1948, Meron Benvenisti, an Israeli political scientist and former deputy mayor of Jerusalem, writes:

“The fate of the sites sacred to Muslims in the State of Israel can serve as an example of how victors arrogate for themselves sites that are sacred to their vanquished enemy and adapt them to their own needs, whether for worship or for secular purposes, even turning them to uses that are clearly sacrilegious. If they find no use for them, they leave them deserted and crumbling, and do not allow members of the defeated people to restore them, lest that serve as a ‘precedent’ for their return to the old landscape.”

He suffered head and internal injuries, and is now being treated for his life-threatening injuries at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle.

Residents said the accident has “shook the street”.

One neighbour said: “It happened just outside my house. It was just awful. I didn’t see it happen but I went out afterwards and the street was filled with people. Everyone was so worried.

“There was an ice cream van there at the time.”

The taxi had been travelling from the direction of Cranmore Road when the accident happened.

The neighbour added: “The police and ambulance came quickly. The ambulance didn’t mess about. They picked him up, put him straight in the ambulance and went.”

Police are appealing for the driver of the ice cream van to contact them as he may have valuable information on the circumstances leading up to the collision, or even have had CCTV on board which could help.

The neighbour added: “We are all praying for the little boy. He is in our thoughts. We were all there for him and his family yesterday.”

Another neighbour said: “This has shook the street. It’s awful and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.”

Potentially confusing Stockton High Street road markings defended by council

Potentially confusing road markings on the same high street where four people were hit by buses last year have been defended.

The road markings at a pedestrian crossing on Stockton High Street feature an arrow indicating the direction of traffic followed by a “BUS LANE” marking, facing the opposite direction, just a few feet along.

Concerns have been raised that the markings could make the direction of traffic unclear for pedestrians using the crossing.

But Stockton Council has defended the layout and markings saying that they meet national guidelines.

Councillor Mike Smith Councillor Mike Smith

Councillor Mike Smith, Stockton Council’s cabinet member for transport and regeneration, said: “The direction of the bus lane text ensures drivers turning right into the high street are aware that the nearest lane is a contra-flow bus lane, while the arrow shows the direction of traffic.

“The markings are in place to help drivers exit the junction safely and are in accordance with national guidelines.”

However an MP has said that the road markings could create confusion and has called for the council to use some common sense.

James Wharton, MP for Stockton South, said: “These markings make it hard to tell which direction traffic originates, the arrow appears to show that traffic should go one way with the direction of the “BUS LANE” writing indicating it would be coming from the other.

“Given the terrible accidents in recent months what we need is clarity.

“This should be straightforward and marked in a way that is easily understood.

“Whoever did this clearly did not step back when they had finished to consider the result of their efforts.

“Stockton Council needs to look again with some common sense and really does need to get this right before someone else is hurt.”

James Wharton, MP for Stockton South James Wharton, MP for Stockton South

Mr Wharton previously called for an urgent review of the layout of Stockton High Street following a number of accidents in which pedestrians were hit by buses.

Speaking to The Gazette in December last year, Mr Wharton said: “The change to the layout means that you need to look in both directions when crossing the road at a number of points, where previously buses only came from one direction.

“It is speculated that this confusion might be a cause of the increase in incidents.”

The controversial road markings are close to the spot where Kelly Marie Evis, from Stockton, was hit by a bus last year. She later died from her injuries.

An inquest found that Miss Evis’s death on September 30 had been an accident.

Acting senior Teesside coroner Clare Bailey said she was satisfied that steps are being taken to make the area as safe as possible.

Since Miss Evis’s accident, a further three people were hit by buses on the high street.

Two survived but Dorothy Bryan, who suffered serious injuries after being hit by a bus on December 4 last year, died on February 24.

In December Stockton Council said it was carrying out a “thorough safety audit” after the accidents.

The authority has not yet released details of its findings.

Stadium Group: Hartlepool-headquartered tech firm profits up by 45%

A Hartlepool-headquartered tech firm has reported strong financial results in its latest update to the City.

In the year ended December 31, 2014, Stadium Group grew normalised pre-tax profit by 45%, from £1.9m in 2013 to £2.7m. Revenues remained steady at £41.7m, compared to £42.2m the year before, while statutory pre-tax profit leapt from £0.4m to £1.8m.

The group also grew its operating profit margin from 5.6% to 7.6%, while making progress on a number of strategic aims.

A final divided of 1.4p per share is proposed, a significant uplift on the 0.75p proposed in 2013.

Stadium chairman Nick Brayshaw said: “This is an exciting period for Stadium and we have made positive progress against our strategic targets.

“We have continued to deliver improving results on the back of profitable and sustainable organic growth, with the addition of value-accretive acquisitions.

“The initial months of 2015 have seen an encouraging start to the year, with the order book and revenues ahead of the comparable period of last year.

“We expect this improvement to continue going forward and therefore remain confident about the prospects for the current year and beyond.”

James Cook University Hospital opens new purpose-built IVF unit

“Previously the unit was divided into different sites within the hospital and shared a theatre with obstetrics and the gynaecology day unit, but now we have our own purpose-built theatre which will treat up to 10 patients a day,” said lead consultant gynaecologist Mr Fayez Mustafa.

“We have everything now behind one door which is much more convenient for patients.

“We are very proud of our new unit. It has already successfully treated its first patients and future patients are extremely impressed when we give them a tour of the new facilities.”

UN says Myanmar sliding towards conflict

UN says Myanmar sliding towards conflict

UN investigator, Yanghee Lee, said she observed no improvements for displaced Rohingya Muslims [FILE - EPA]

Myanmar is sliding towards conflict as the government backtracks on pledges to protect human rights and “fear, distrust and hostility” spread, a UN investigator has said in a report published on Monday.

Yanghee Lee, UN special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, saw “no improvement” for displaced Rohingya Muslims since her previous visit last July to investigate allegations of mistreatment of them by the Buddhist majority in Rakhine state.

She observed “a growing atmosphere of fear, distrust and hostility” during her latest visit in January, when she was publicly denounced as a “whore” and a “bitch” by a prominent Buddhist monk.

Lee witnessed “abysmal” conditions at a camp where displaced Muslims were being held “for their own security”, Rakhine’s chief minister told her.

“Many people told the Special Rapporteur that they had two options: to stay and die or to leave by boat,” said Lee’s report to the UN Human Rights Council.

Human rights violations in Rakhine were causing a “domino effect” in the region as people were smuggled or trafficked out to Thailand or Malaysia.

The mostly stateless minority was likely to be the main loser from a new law initiated by the Rakhine National Party that restricts political party membership to full and naturalised citizens, she said.

Backward step

Moreover, Myanmar’s Constitutional Tribunal had stripped voting rights in an upcoming constitutional referendum from all temporary registration card holders. President Thein Sein has said these cards would expire this month.

Lee said this was a backward step for reform and called for “all habitual residents of Myanmar” to be able to
