Full text: Babri masjid demolition planned by RSS, BJP – First Post

Source: First Post

Editors note: This is the full text of the sting operation by Cobrapost, which claims the demolition of the Babri Masjid on 6 December 1992 was planned by the RSS, with the knowledge of senior BJP leaders. The text has not been edited by Firstpost in any way. Firstpost does not vouch for the authenticity of the claims made in the report.

Cobrapost brings to light the conspiracy and exposes the conspirators behind the events of December 6, 1992, which rewrote the history of modern India on communal lines In a long undercover investigation, Cobrapost has unearthed the conspiracy behind the fall of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, exposing the actors who pulled the strings from behind the scene, weaving about a complex cobweb of intrigue and deceit that even the CBI could not unravel after years of investigation.

Working at different levels, these actors kept the whole plan a highly guarded secret with its details never coming out. The plan was given a codename, ‘Operation Janmabhoomi’, which Cobrapost found apt to use for its undercover operation, as well, and was executed with precision of a military operation, from conducting training to putting all logistics in place and finally launching the assault, using multitudes of crowds as cover.

AFP Posing as an author-to-be researching for his book on the Ayodhya movement, Cobrapost Associate Editor K. Ashish interviewed 23 of these actors, namely, B.L. Sharma Prem, Dharmendra Singh Gurjar, Jai Bhagwan Goyal, Pawan Pandey, Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya, Santosh Dubey, Swami Sachidanand Sakshi Maharaj, Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti, Ramji Gupta, Ramesh Pratap Singh, Sadhavi Ritambhara, Sadhavi Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, Kalyan Singh, Prakash Sharma, Champat Rai Bansal, Satish Pradhan, Mahant Avaidyanath, Acharya Dharmendra, Moreshwar Save, Lallu Singh, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Swami Nritya Gopal Das.

Of these, while the Liberhan Commission has indicted 15, the CBI has named 19 accused in its chargesheet, strangely enough leaving out B. L. Sharma, Mahant Avaidyanath, Nritya Gopal Das and Ram Vilas Vedanti. In all, 40 are facing trial in a CBI court, of which 32 have been made accused in FIR No. 92/197 as executors, while the remaining eight have been made accused in FIR No. 92/198 as conspirators. The investigation took Associate Editor Ashish to Ayodhya, Faizabad, Tanda, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Mathura and Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh; Jaipur in Rajasthan, Aurangabad and Mumbai in Maharashtra and Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

The Conspiracy and Preparations for the Assault Role of the Bajrang Dal: As the Cobrapost investigation reveals, the conspiracy to demolish the Babri Masjid was hatched at the top level and those who were recruited for training did not know it till the countdown for mosque’s fall began a month before in November. In June 1992, Bajrang Dal, for instance, conducted a month-long military style training for 38 of its cadre chosen from various regions in Sarkhej, Gujarat. The training was given by retired high-ranking military officers.

Ideological teachings were imparted to the cadres by the likes of Acharya Giriraj Kishore, Acharya Dharmendra, Dr. Praveen Togadia, Jaibhan Pawaiya and Ashok Singhal. The drills conducted at the Neela Teela in Ayodhya by Bajrang Dal cadres took the training they had received in Gujarat a step further. But how and when such skills — like climbing taller structures with the help of grappling hooks and ropes — would be put to use was not revealed till the day when the top VHP office bearers asked them to form Laxman Sena with the specific purpose of dismantling the disputed structure in a top secret meeting that was held in the basement of Ram Katha Manch.

According to Ramesh Pratap Singh: “Uss baithak mein hum paanch jo humari prashikshit logon mein se paanch the paanch ke baad chatha Ramji Gupta aur Durg Singh Chauhan. Humare adhikari ne humse milne ke baad unka samark wahi unka adesh tha baithak lenge Durg Singh Chauhan aur karravai jo bhi aapko karna ho aap kya karoge rachna kya karoge theek hai wo parde se huth gaye (There were five persons from among those who had received training in this meeting. The sixth person was Ramji Gupta and then there was Durg Singh Chauhan.

After meeting with us this office bearer told us Durg Singh Chauhan would be our contact point and he would coordinate all the meetings. Decide whatever you want, how you will form it. After that this office bearer disappeared from the scene).” This VHP office bearer was none other than Champat Rai Bansal. Bajrang Dal’s War Cry ‘Jai Sheshavatar’: Apart from Ramesh Pratap Singh, this secret meeting was attended by Dharmendra Singh Gurjar from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Hariya Lal Parikh from Rajasthan, Arun Khanna from Punjab, K. Nagarajan from Tamil Nadu and Arun Kumar Tiger from Jharkhand.

Ramji Gupta was put in charge of this band of 1,200 RSS workers secreted from various regions. Gupta supplied them with all the logistics such as chisels, heavy-duty hammers, pickaxes, spades, grappling hooks and sturdy ropes in good numbers. The army was divided into smaller groups of 10 each with a leader and each group had its job cut out. All these groups had the instructions to merge with the crowds when they would surge toward the Babri Masjid for karseva and finish the tasks assigned to them.

They would not listen to any leader, however senior and respected he might be, till the task was accomplished. ‘Jai Sheshavatar’ was the signal for the groups to begin work on their brief, which according to Ramji Gupta, had to be raised thrice. According to Dharmendra Singh Gurjar of Bajrang Dal from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, from among this band of Laxman Sena, even a suicide squad was formed, which they called Balidani Jattha, a la the fidayeen Islamic terrorist organisations use. This squad was supposed to lead the assault on the Babri Masjid from the front.

When the Babri Masjid was razed to dust on December 6, it was Shiv Sena chief Balasheb Thackeray who proudly claimed before the world that it was the Shiv Sena which did the job, as BJP leaders like L. K. Advani went about town offering apologies. Thackeray’s claim was not hollow as the Cobrapost investigation establishes. Role of the Shiv Sena: Like the VHP, the Shiv Sena too had its own plan to demolish the Babri Masjid and conducted a secret training camp in Bhind–Morena in Madhya Pradesh, bordering Uttar Pradesh, where necessary skills were imparted to its cadres.

Says Vinay Pandey of this training: “Usmein Jai Bhagwal Goyal the Delhi ke aur ek Madan Lal Chadda Ghaziabad jinhone wahan vayavastha diya tha, Mahesh Ahuja the aur Anand Digheji uss samay Maharashtra se aaye the training dilwane ke liye (There was Jai Bhagwal Goyal from Delhi, there was Madan Lal Chadda from Ghaziabad who had made arrangements for the training, there was Mahesh Ahuja and Anand Dighe had come down from Maharashtra to impart training).” The top Shiv Sena leadership including Balasheb Thackeray, Raj Thackeray, Satish Pradhan and Moreshwar Save were keeping a tab on all these activities. Moreshwar Save is also learnt to have provided financial support for the training.

A co-accused in the case, Save helped with money to run the training camps. “Save ne kuch madad nahi ki sirf political aur arhtik madad ki. Uss samay khane-peene ke liye hum 65–70 hazar rupaya humko diya gaya tha wo logon ki khane peene ki vyavastha karne ke liye (Save didn’t help much. He helped us politically and financially. He gave us Rs. 65,000–70,000 to arrange food for the trainees),” claims Pawan Pandey, a Shiv Sena leader who has been chargesheeted by the CBI in the case.

The Relic of Mir Baqi on Sale: In the thick of action on December 6, Pandey saw the domes of the mosque crumbling and saw the heavy stone plaque erected by Mir Baqi declaring the establishment of the Babri Masjid, fall apart in three pieces. He took away two pieces of the antique relic as memento. which are still in his possession.

Pandey proudly says: “Wo toh abhi humare paas hi hai. Do hissa humare paas hai ek hissa jama hai (This is still with me. Two pieces are with me while the other is with the authorities).” Pandey now wants to auction these relics to make some quick bucks. Arsenal Used:While the VHP and its youth wing the Bajrang Dal were holding secret meetings at Ayodhya to plan the final assault on the Babri Masjid, the Shiv Sena leadership too was confabulating on the fate of the Babri from New Delhi’s North Avenue, which was attended by Save and Pradhan, among others.

If all methods failed, Shiv Sena had an explosive Plan B: dynamite the mosque. Claims Goyal: “Humare paas dynamite bhi tha hum dynamite bhi lekar gaye the wahan par agar zaroorat padti usko bhi chala dete iss taiyari se gaye the hum (We were carrying dynamite there. If need arose, we had gone fully prepared to use it).” In 1990 too, Shiv Sena had tried this option, which was foiled as the police arrested Suresh Baghel who was carrying 28 dynamite sticks.

Imagine the mayhem it could have caused had such zealots succeeded in their diabolical designs. If not dynamite, petrol bombs were definitely used by these saboteurs to dismantle the structure. This dangerous act was committed by the Bihar team of Bajrang Dal. Former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was also seen planting a petrol bomb there by none other than his fellow karsevak Jaibhan Singh Pawaiya. Look at the claim Pawaiya makes: “Ek petrol bomb do baje koi lekar aaya jo eent mein lagane ke baad dhuan nikal kar reh gaya uske baad hila bhi nahi … Brij Bhushan laya tha arre petrol bomb (Somebody brought a petrol bomb at about 2 pm. After it was planted between the bricks, it did not work, releasing some smoke only.

Oh, it was Brij Bhushan who had brought the petrol bomb).” Apart from petrol bombs, the forward squad of Bajrang Dal used traditional tools like chisels, heavy-duty hammers, pick axes, spades and grappling ropes were also used in good numbers to bring down the mosque. Sankalp to Demolish Babri: Sensing the do-or-die mood of Ram bhakts (devotees) who had descended on Ayodhya in lakhs to settle the issue once and for all, a Sankalp (or oath), was administered.

The onerous task of initiating the vow fell on Ram Vilas Vedanti. The Sankalp said: “Sankalp mein likha tha aaj dinank 6 December ko hum sabhi Ram Bhakt Ram Lala ke prangan mein yeh pratigya karte hain ki jahan par khandahar khada hai uss jageh bhavya mandir banane ke liye iss Ram Janmabhoomi ke mandir ke khandahar ko hatana avashyak hai isliye isko hatake bhavya mandir ka nirman karaya jaaye iska sankalp hum log Ram Lala ko samarpit karte hain iss dhang se tha (There was written in the oath that on this day of December 6 we all Ram bhakts take this oath on the premises of Ram Lala that it is necessary to remove the structure from where it stands to make a grand temple there.

It is necessary to remove the structure to make a Ram Janmabhoomi Temple. We all take this oath for Ram Lala).” No sooner had the oath been administered, began the assault on Babri. Dubious Role of VHP Chief Ashok Singhal: As it is already known and as it has come to light in the Cobrapost investigation as well, there were two determined attempts to demolish the Babri first in October 1990 and then in December 1992. However, the first attempt ended in police firing in which karsevaks were killed.

Recounting the horror of October 30, Sakshi Maharaj says that if there is anybody to be blamed for the killing of karvsevaks, it has to be Ashok Singhal, none else: “Toh mere saamne Ashok Singhal ji ne kaha Maharaj kuch log nahi marenge toh andolan upar nahi uthega toh aap agya do jaane ki … toh Ashok Singhal ji ne kaha … Vamdev ji ne kaha bache marenge toh bahut kaam kharab ho jayega … Bole Maharaj jab tak nahi marenge tab tak kuch hoga nahi andolan, tabhi barhega (Before me, Ashok Singhal said ‘Maharaj (to Vamdev), the movement would not gain momentum unless some people die’.

This is what Ashok Singhal said. Maharaj Vamdev said it will be disastrous if children die. Ashok Singhal again said the movement will not get a fillip until they die).” Sakshi avers that well-known karsevaks like the Kothari brothers from West Bengal and Mahendra Singh from Rajastan were deliberately targeted by the police at the behest of some vested interests spearheading the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

Adding credence to Sakshi’s averments, then BJP leader and MP Uma Bharti also blames Bajrang Dal leader Vinay Katiyar, her compatriot in the movement, for the killing of the Kothari brothers: “Jo log mare the wo Vinay ki galti se. Galti bhi nahi wo bhagdar machi wo gali chhoti thi. Galti matlab wo bhag gaya chhodkar bhag gaya (They got killed because of Vinay’s mistake. Actually, there was a stampede and the byelane was narrow. By mistake he fled the scene abandoning his group).”

These revelations add a new dimension to the Ayodhya conspiracy and raise a pertinent question with regard to the intent of its leaders: Were they using the youth as sacrificial goats? Like Sakshi Maharaj and Uma Bharti, Dharmendra Singh Gurjar, another frontline leader of Bajrang Dal at that time, is critical of the manner the leaders used the youth of the country for furthering the movement, only to dump them later: “Ye sab bewaqoof banane wali baatein hain isiliye toh humara desh bewaqoof banta aa raha hai … pehle hum jawani ke josh mein the … junoon mein the ek junoon tha guzar gaya … logon ne upyog kiya aur chhod diya use karke (All this talk is an exercise in making a fool of people … this is why our countrymen are made a fool every now and then (by such leaders) … in those days I was being driven by the enthusiasm of youth … I was driven by plain madness … it was plain madness which has passed … people used us and threw us out after using us).” Drawing an analogy, he says “leaders use us in the same manner as we use tobacco”.

What he says shows his complete disenchantment with proponents of Hindutva: “Aise logon ke sath kiya bees saal baad logon ki zaroorat nahi ya jo bees saal baad naye yuva honge unka upyog karenge (This is what they did. After 20 years (of the Ayodhya movement), they don’t need people like us … or they will use the new generation of youth after 20 years).” Another interesting fact that Cobrapost investigation has thrown up is that disenchantment against the BJP leadership runs deep also among the more hardliners of Ram Janmabhoomi movement leadership.

Hindu Zealot Cursing Fellow Hindu Zealot: If leaders like Gurjar feel cheated, Acharya Dharmendra too feels slighted at the compromising stand of leaders like L. K. Advani: “Sachai ye hai ki Advani ji karm fod rahe hain abhi tak karm fod rahe hain ki mere jeevan ki abhi tak ki sabse badi durghatna thi. Sachai ye hai. Toh fir kis ko kya fayada hona hai? Atalji ne kaha mere jeevan ka sabse sharmnak din hai toh aur kya sachai hai? Sachai ye hai Arun Jaitley ne kaha ki Hindutva humare liye ek loklubhavan nara hai anyatha hum Gandhivadi samajvadi dharmnirpeksh loktantra mein vishwash rakhte hain. Satya ye hai ki Sushma Swaraj ne 1992 mein ye kaha ki Ram Janmabhoomi ek baar hi cash hota hai aur wo humne cash karwa liya wo karva chuke aur kya satya hai? (The truth is Advani is still cursing his karma going about saying that it (Ayodhya demolition) was the saddest event of his life. This is the truth. Then, who is going to benefit? Atal (Behari Vajpayee) said it was the most shameful event of his life. What more truth you want to know? The truth is (BJP leader) Arun Jaitley said that Hindutva is a populist slogan for us. Otherwise we believe in the Gandhian, Socialist and secular democracy.

The truth is Sushma Swaraj said in 1992 that you can encash Ram Janmabhoomi movement only once and we have done that).” Mahant Avaidyanath too spews venom against Advani: “Advani bahut … unko toh zinda nahi rehna chahiye (Advani … he should not stay alive).” He says the rest of the leadership: “Nahi sab swarthi log hain jo iss tareh se kehte hain kyonki aapko Hindutva ki avashayakta nahi hai jab zaroorat hoti hai istemaal karte hain (No, all these leaders are selfish who say such things because they don’t need Hindutva at all. When they need it, they just use it).”

Another leader who has only disdain for leaders like L. K. Advani is Santosh Dubey. He says bluntly: “Jisko iss desh ka Hindu bhagwan maan raha ho jab wo hi jhooth bolne lag jayega toh log usko shaitan manane mein bhi der nahi karenge. Advani jhoothe aadmi hain unhone Jinna ko Brahmin aadmi bataya. Ganda aadmi hai kul milakar. Dhancha tudwane mein unki poori sahmati hai kaise jageh jageh unhone jaloos nikala sabhayein ki har jageh bolte the. Aapne toda hai ya nahi toda hai lekin aapne lalkara toh, todne wale toh taiyar kiye (If someone who the Hindus revere as God begins to tell a lie, it will not take long for them to trash him as a Satan. Advani is a liar who said Jinnah was a Brahmin. He is a dirty fellow in all. He had agreed on the idea of felling the structure. It was he who led the processions, addressed the meetings and talked about it everywhere he went. You broke it or not, but you gave a call and prepared people for the job).”

Role of Kalyan Singh, the Nero:A fallout of the events that followed the failed attempt on Babri and killing of karsevaks in October 1990 was that BJP came to power in four states, and Uttar Pradesh was one of them, with Kalyan Singh at the helms. Now, the approach was diametrically different from the approach that the local administration had in the 1990 karseva. Although Kalyan Singh had the foreknowledge of what going to happen on December 6, he chose to look the other way round.

Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti, another leader of the movement, claims to have informed Kalyan Singh about it a day before: “Paanch December ki raat ko hi Kalyan Singh ke paas samachar bhej diya gaya tha aur usmein ye kaha gaya tha ki yadi awashayakta padti hai toh dhancha bhi tod diya jayega aapko kya bhoomika nirwah karni hai vichar kar lijye (On the night of December 5 itself Kalyan Singh was informed of it and he was told that if need be the structure would be felled. Now, you decide what you have to do).” Sakshi Maharaj also claims to be in constant touch with the then chief minister.

It is learned that at one point, Kalyan Singh had made up his mind to resign in the morning on December 6 when he came to know an assault on the disputed structure has begun, but senior leaders of the RSS like H. V. Sheshadri and Murli Manohar Joshi dissuaded him, while BJP leaders in Lucknow made him captive the whole day until a clean job of the mosque had been made at Ayodhya. What made the job easier for these zealots was a sympathetic administration and police force, which instead of discharging their constitutional obligations were goading the karsevaks to remove the “headache” the Babri had become for them.

Pawaiya makes another interesting observation about the role the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) played on December 6, 1992: “Wahan nirman kayra ka jo stall tha, uss stall ko todkar ke saaman nikala. Usmein jo rasse the aur jo PAC tha jo Uttar Pradesh ka usne chhaini aur ye saari cheezein logon ke haath mein di ki isko saale ko sirdard ko khatma karo to wo sahyog mein lekar usase toota tha. Matlab PAC favour mein thi poora sainya bal ye keh raha tha kya-kya chahye tumhein tod daalo tum ye tha wahan par (There was this stall for construction work. That stall was broken apart and the ropes and other stuff were taken out.

The PAC of Uttar Pradesh gave the people chisels and other implements saying they should remove this headache forever. This is how they cooperated in the demolition. I mean, the PAC was in absolute favour. The constabulary was saying tell us what you want. You break it down. This is how it happened).” There is no surprise if the then District Magistrate Ravindra Nath Srivastava and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Devendar Bahadur Roy find themselves among the accused in the CBI chargesheet. Role of Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao: After the Babri Masjid demolition, there were allegations flying thick and fast that then Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao had given his tacit support to the demolition.

Cobrapost investigation finds these allegations true as some leaders at the forefront of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement like Vinay Katiyar, B. L. Sharma, Santosh Dubey, Sakshi Maharaj and Mahant Ram Vilas Vedanti openly acknowledge Rao’s supportive role. An Elephant and Four Blind Men: Interestingly, on the surface, the interviews all these proponents of Ram Janmabhoomi movement had with Cobrapost’s Associate Editor Ashish remind us of the story we read in our school days in which four visually challenged persons get hold of an elephant and describe it the way they perceive the different body parts they are holding. But in the end, they serve the same purpose.

Similarly, all the major leaders interviewed describe the various aspects of the movement, and between their claims and counterclaims one has to read the subtext to ascertain their involvement in the larger conspiracy and execution, so subtle are their answers at times to pinpointed questions. For instance, Champat Rai Bansal would draw an analogy when he describes his role in the demolition of Babri Masjid. Bansal asks the reporter who killed Rawan? When the reporter says it was Ram who killed Rawan, Bansal in turn asks: “Vibhishan ki bhoomika nahi hai (Didn’t Vibhishan have a role in it)?” Bansal is no minion to make such statements that would not carry weight, for the high-ranking functionary of VHP and a close aide of Ashok Singhal was one of the architects of Laxman Sena which was entrusted with the task of razing Babri to the ground on December 6, taking advantage of the sea of restive karsevaks gathered there at Ayodhya. His understatement suffices to make it clear that the whole ‘Operation Janmabhoomi’ was conducted with utmost secrecy, with even some senior most leaders of the movement never coming to know of such audacious plan.

Callous Face of Hindutva: However, a very callous and indifferent face of this movement and its leadership comes in full glare when the Cobrapost reporter reminds Mahant Avaidyanth of the sacrifices numerous karsevaks such as Vinod Vats, whose old parents now have nothing to fall back upon. Avaidyanath nonchalantly makes light of such a sacrifice: “Sabko marna hai tumko bhi hai mujhe bhi marna hai. Mrityu ko kaun rok sakta hai (All have to die, both you and me. Death is inevitable).” He has the same philosophy for his old, helpless parents: “Wo bhi marenge unko bhi marna hai (They will also die. They also have to die).”

A Witness to the Fraud: The Cobrapost investigation brings to the fore one more fact: the appearance of Ram Lala at the Babri Mosque was not the result of some divine intervention but the handiwork of a petty priest and two senior government officials who became willing conspirators in this fraud. A witness to this deceit was none other than Baikunth Lal Sharma alias Prem, two-time BJP MP from East Delhi. It all happened before his eyes in 1949, Sharma claims, when he was posted in Ayodhya with Military Police as a Warrant Officer. Priest Ram Chandra Das, a regular visitor to their unit, informed them how on a particular day Ram Lala would appear. Debunking the theory of Ram Lala’s ‘divine appearance’, Sharma avers: “Arre ji kahe ke prakat hone wale … prakat kiya hai … wo toh maharaji ka kaam tha na Ram Chandra Paramhans (How would He (Ram Lala) appear? He was made to appear … It was the handiwork of Maharaj Ram Chandra Paramhans).”

At some other point in the course of his interview, this Hindu-zealot-turned-Khalsa claims: “Ayodhya ki baat sun le main 15 December 1949 ko Military Police mein tha, Ayodhya mein hi tha mere 13 logon ka main warrant officer tha. Hum logon ko jab moortiyan sthapit hui main wahin tha … Thakur Guru Dutt Singh ji the aur Nayyar sahib the theek hai inhone sahyog diya humara jab kabhi hum Faizabad mein humari unit thi bacche Muktar Ghat par (Now, listen to what happened in Ayodhya on December 15, 1949. I was then with Military Police and was posted at Ayodhya. I was Warrant Officer of a unit of 13 military personnel there. Posted there was Thakur Guru Dutt Singh and Nayyar. They helped install the statues. Our unit was stationed at the Muktar Ghat in Ayodhya).” Although the chronology of events Sharma claims to have been witness to is not accurate (there is a difference of only one week), what he says is irrefutable, for the two officials K. K. Nayyar and Guru Dutt Singh were, respectively, the district magistrate and city magistrate of Faizabad, who wrote the script of this fraud, collaborating with priests Ram Chandra Das, born Chandreshwar Tiwari in Bihar, and Dharam Das.

In 1952, Nayyar took voluntary retirement to join Jan Sangh, the political front floated by the RSS, and became an MP in 1967. Priest Ram Chandra also grew in stature to attain the title of Paramhans in the Hindu religious order as lakhs of Hindus were mobilized by the RSS and its extension VHP and other Hindu outfits in the 1980s with the opening of the gates of Ram Janmabhoomi in 1986 by the Congress government of the day, with the movement reaching a crescendo in 1990 and finally culminating in the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992, irreconcilably polarizing the country on communal lines

Turkey’s ruling AKP party reaps seven per cent increase in local elections

Turkish flag

Turkey’s unofficial local election results indicate that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) won 45.6 per cent of the votes, thus controlling 18 provinces with major Turkish cities, including Istanbul and Ankara, out of 47 provinces and 586 administrative districts. This means that the party has registered a significant seven per cent increase in public support compared to the 2009 elections, when the party won 38.8 per cent of the votes and controlled 45 provinces, including ten major provinces, and 481 administrative regions.

Turkey’s media are reporting that AKP maintained its popularity in the 38 provinces in comparison to the 2009 elections, most notably in Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Gaziantep, Konya and Erzurum, the birth city of Fethullah Gulen, the leader of the religious group that the government accuses of penetrating state institutions, including the security services and judiciary, to form a parallel state.

Furthermore, AKP won nine provinces from the opposition parties, including: Antalya from the Republican People’s Party; Balıkesir, Kastamonu, UÅŸak and Ardahan from the Turkish National Movement; Burdur from the Democratic Left Party; Sivas from the Unity Party; and Åžanlıurfa from an independent mayor.

Meanwhile, AKP also lost six provinces: Kars and Rize in favour of the Turkish National Party; Burdur and Hatay in favour of CHP; and Ağrı and Bitlis in favour of the Peace and Democracy Party.

The opposition Republican People’s Party, the oldest party in Turkey, won 27.8 per cent of the votes to control 14 provinces, including six major provinces with major cities and 170 administrative regions, achieving a slight progress compared to the 2009 elections, when the party won 27.5 per cent of the votes and controlled 13 provinces, including three major provinces, and 180 administrative regions. It also maintained its popularity in ten provinces compared to the 2009 elections, most notably in Izmir, which the AKP has been working hard to win over, and Çanakkale

A Chance to Move On

Israeli+Prime+Minister+Weekly+Cabinet+Meeting+SOGLfBb73J6l On Monday, former prime minister Ehud Olmert’s career ended.

Earlier this month, former IDF chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. (ret.) Gabi Ashkenazi’s career ended.

And on Tuesday, the phony peace process ended.

In the lead-up to last year’s elections, the media and key political figures were yearning for Olmert’s return to politics.

In July 2008, Olmert was forced to cede leadership of the Kadima party, and so opt out of running for reelection, when then-attorney-general Menahem Mazuz announced he was indicting the premier on corruption charges.

Olmert left office in March 2009 when his government was replaced by Binyamin Netanyahu’s coalition government.

The public abandoned its support for Olmert in the summer of 2006 as a result of his incompetent leadership of the Second Lebanon War. By the end of the summer, Olmert’s approval rating stood at 3 percent. But with the able assistance of the media, and of Yisrael Beytenu chairman Avigdor Liberman who saved Olmert’s government by joining it, Olmert was able to weather the storm and keep going despite the public’s lack of faith in his leadership and ardent desire to force him from office.

The media’s romance with Olmert began formally in late 2003, when he followed then-premier Ariel Sharon from the center-right to the far Left. Indeed, as Sharon abandoned his pledges to voters and adopted the platform of the defeated Labor Party of unilaterally withdrawing from Gaza, Olmert outflanked him from the Left.

Always a political pugilist, Olmert was eager to attack everyone who opposed Sharon’s withdrawal plan. He had no qualms about using rank demonization to attack his former political allies in the Likud.

It was Olmert’s newfound devotion to the platform of the far Left that won him the support of media heavies like Yediot Aharonot’s Nahum Barnea, Ma’ariv’s Ben Caspit and Channel 2’s Amnon Abramovich. They were more than happy to attack as delusional independent investigative reporter Yoav Yitzhak who broke nearly every corruption story regarding Olmert, beginning in 2005.

After four years of desultory, at best, probes between 2009 and 2012, Olmert was indicted in four separate cases on corruption charges. After he was acquitted of most of the charges in his first two trials, his media allies began a campaign to return him to politics. Only Olmert, they said, had a chance to defeat Netanyahu. None of the other leftist party heads had a shot.

But alas, Olmert was otherwise engaged, in his criminal defense. And now that he is a convicted felon, Olmert will never be able to return to politics.

Even his media friends have to cut their losses and find a new leader.

Several years ago, they were certain that they had their man. Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi was promoted to the helm of the IDF following his predecessor Dan Halutz’s forced resignation due to his incompetent leadership of the army in the Second Lebanon War.

Ashkenazi was everything the media and the Left love in a leader. He was a general. He was handsome. And he was going to save the IDF from its demoralization. He was going to introduce new training regimens and operational procedures to ensure that the next time the IDF went to war, its victory would be inarguable.

Oh, and he was a leftist. Which meant that even if he failed, no one would ever find out.

And indeed, Ashkenazi’s leadership of the IDF during Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009 was a failure. As one senior commander put it shortly after the operation ended, “Gabi Ashkenazi marched the army into Gaza, and marched it out again, leaving Hamas in charge and Gilad Schalit behind.”

Officers who wished to take a more constructive approach to fighting, like OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoav Galant and Gaza Division commander Brig.-Gen. Moshe Tamir, were immediately placed on Ashkenazi’s enemies list.

Allegations of wrongdoing against Ashkenazi first surfaced three-and-a-half years ago. In August 2010, Abramovich exposed a document on Channel 2 which purported to show that Galant was waging a negative campaign against Ashkenazi and then-Maj.-Gen. Benny Gantz to replace Ashkenazi as chief of the General Staff.

Within a week the document was shown to be a forgery. It was concocted by an associate of Ashkenazi’s named Boaz Harpaz. It was leaked to Channel 2 by a senior Defense Ministry official, Gabi Shimoni, a close friend of Ashkenazi.

Rather than pursue the story, which stank to high heaven, the media ignored it. Attorney- General Yehuda Weinstein refused to order the police to investigate it. And to the extent that the police had information that indicated illegal behavior by Ashkenazi’s associates beyond the leak and the forgery specifically, they were ordered not to pursue them.

The only reason that the story of the forged document didn’t disappear is because state comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss investigated it, and Channel 1’s Ayala Hasson pursued it. And due to their efforts, the police were shamed into investigating.

Now it is apparent that the story of the forged document was part of a much larger abuse of power by Ashkenazi and his loyal foot soldiers.

Earlier this month, Ashkenazi’s closest aides Col. (res.) Erez Winer and former IDF spokesman Brig.-Gen. (res.) Avi Benayahu were arrested in connection to rising allegations of mass abuse of power. Since then, a parade of Ashkenazi’s close associates including current Deputy Chief of General Staff Maj.-Gen. Gadi Eisenkott and deputy director-general of the Defense Ministry Betzalel Tribor have been called in for questioning.

The widening probe paints a revolting picture of a mass abuse of power by Ashkenazi, facilitated by senior IDF officers and officials at the Defense Ministry and then covered up by senior officials at the Justice Ministry and the police, with the active collusion of the media.

Ashkenazi, it appears, was positioning himself to become the next prime minister. To this end, he allegedly decided to end the careers of IDF officers who criticized his leadership. And far more egregiously, he actively undermined then-defense minister Ehud Barak, and subverted Barak’s authority and that of the elected government in a bid to force Netanyahu and Barak to toe his timid line on Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

Although the police probe is only at its early stages, and it is far too early to know who if anyone will be indicted for what, as a result of the investigation Ashkenazi’s political aspirations have been destroyed. More important, the permanent bureaucracy, which enabled Ashkenazi to run roughshod over democratic norms in his quest to position himself as the prime minister in waiting, has been weakened.

Ashkenazi’s foot soldiers are all in trouble. And their troubles will likely deter other officers and senior officials from abusing their power in similar ways in the future.

Each new revelation of wrongdoing in the ongoing probe also discredits Ashkenazi’s protectors in the permanent law enforcement bureaucracy.

Olmert’s fall and Ashkenazi’s fall coincide with the implosion of the so-called peace process. For the past generation, allegiance to the phony peace process with the PLO has been the glue that has held the Left together. No matter how opposed to concessions the public became, the leftist establishment maintained its faith and total commitment to continued appeasement of the PLO. In large part they did so because allegiance to the peace process earned them the support and legitimization of the US.

In the absence of any capacity to win the public’s support for continued concessions to the PLO, the Left has used its close ties to the US as a shield from criticism and as valuable leverage against the government. Only the Left, it was said, could protect Israel’s alliance with the US.

Back in January, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon let the truth be known about the nature of Secretary of State John Kerry’s peace process.

In private remarks reported by Yediot, Ya’alon said, “There are no actual negotiations with the Palestinians. The Americans are holding negotiations with us and in parallel with the Palestinians.

So far, we are the only side to have given anything – the release of murderers – and the Palestinians have given nothing.”

This week, Kerry proved that Ya’alon’s statement was a gross understatement. The US is not acting as a go-between between the sides. It is acting as the PLO’s proxy.

By offering Israel to trade imprisoned Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard for Palestinian terrorist murderers, Kerry transformed the US from the leader in the war against terrorism, into the champion of terrorists. Moreover, he indicated that he views Pollard as a hostage that the US is free to use to extort concessions to terrorists from Israel.

As a result of Kerry’s scandalous behavior, the US media, which for 20 years have enthusiastically supported every US effort to force Israel to make concessions to the PLO, lost their stomach for the show. Everyone from The New York Times to The Washington Post to The Wall Street Journal and network news attacked Kerry for his actions.

To a degree, the US media’s castigation of Kerry was unfair. He only followed the two-state model to its logical conclusion. Since the Palestinians refuse to abandon their goal of destroying Israel, they will never agree to a peace deal with Israel that will require them to live at peace with the Jewish state. As a result, they will never make any concessions to Israel.

The only way to keep this fraudulent negotiating process going is for the US to both coerce Israel into making more and more one-sided concessions to the PLO, such as freeing terrorist murderers form prison, and providing Israel with US payoffs to make the government continue to abide by a fiction. In other words, Kerry had no option other than to offer up Pollard as a hostage to be swapped in exchange for freedom to Palestinian terrorists.

Transforming the US into the proxy of a terrorist organization was just the beginning of Kerry’s failure.

His desperate behavior showed PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas that there are no depths Kerry will not plumb to prolong the fictional peace process.

And so on Tuesday, in an open act of contempt for Kerry, Abbas applied for membership in international bodies, in breach of the foundational requirement of the peace process: that a Palestinian state only be formed as a consequence of a peace agreement with Israel to prevent such a state from gaining independence while in a state of war with Israel.

Until now, it was US pressure on Israel for concessions to the Palestinians that kept the Israeli Left going. Now, without any leadership, with its power base in the permanent bureaucracy weakened, and the US role as mediator wholly discredited not only among the Israeli public, but in the US media, the Left has nothing to latch on to.

If the government uses the opportunity to abandon the two-state paradigm, it stands its best chance in 20 years of succeeding.

Redcar teenager locked up for two years and nine months after admitting child sex offences

Darryl Williams was under 18 when he committed most of the offences against the underage girls

A teenager has been locked up for two years and nine months after he admitted a string of sexual offences against five girls.

Darryl Williams, 19, was under 18 when he committed most of the offences against the underage girls.

He pleaded guilty to six child sex offences last month and was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court today.

He admitted charges of sexual activity with a child, sexual assault and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

The crimes spanned a three-year period when Williams, of Windsor Road, Redcar, was aged between 14 and 18.

In all but one case, the girls were several years younger than him.

Sentencing, Judge John Milford QC said Williams exploited the girls, was persistent and posed "an ongoing risk to underage females".

A probation report said his behaviour was "predatory and exploitative" towards young and impressionable girls.

Williams was also given a sexual offences prevention order, will be banned from working with children and will be on the sex offenders' register.

Tees Valley Mohawks hoping to have injured skipper Jorge Ebanks back

Tees Valley Mohawks are hoping to have injured skipper Jorge Ebanks back for their final EBL National League Division One match of the season

Tees Valley Mohawks are hoping to have injured skipper Jorge Ebanks back for their final EBL National League Division One match of the season on Sunday.

The Cayman Islands international, who has been in impressive form this term, limped out of last weekend’s win over Leicester Warriors with a twisted ankle.

With several other players also nursing injuries, that was the last thing the Mohawks needed as they battle for a place in the play-offs.

But although last night’s trip to Team Northumbria came too soon, he was hopeful of being fit for Sunday’s home game against Manchester Magic at Middlesbrough College (tip-off 3pm).

And coach Steve Butler has confirmed that should Ebanks fail a fitness test, he is expected to be available for the play-offs, should Mohawks qualify.

They need to hope results go the right way, but a place in the play-off quarter-finals remains achievable for Butler’s side.

“This season has been a fantastic experience,” said the Mohawks chief, “and I’ve learned a lot and developed as a coach.

“The players have given everything in every game and I couldn’t have asked for a greater bunch of guys.

“Manchester Magic are a very good team and it will be a tough game as we have a few of our players away with a university holiday but we can cope as other players can step up and take their chance in the first five.”

Mohawks went into the week with a 12-12 record as the play-offs loom. They need 13 wins to guarantee eighth spot in the table.

One of the players who could help them achieve that is in-form is Jerome Narcisse. Last weekend he was close to getting his first triple double with 19 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.

Victories over both North-east derby rivals Northumbnria and Manchester would move ahead of Bristol Academy Flyers in seventh spot due to them having the better head-to-head record.

But Butler admitted he would be content with just a single victory as that’s all it would take to extend their season for a further week.

“I’m not concerned about seventh or eighth spot as every play-off game is special and never easy, no matter who you are playing,” he said.

“I’m more concerned about getting the important win to get into the play offs whether it is against Northumbria or Manchester.”

Magic, on their return to Division One this season, have already booked their place in the play-offs.

They made sure by winning 85-79 away to Kent side Medway Park Crusaders last weekend. Ryan Lohfink led Magic with 19 points as Medway’s own play-off hopes were ended.

Mohawks II have already finished their season. They managed to avoid bottom place in the Division Three (North) table - that dubious honour went to Derby Trailblazers II - but finished just one place higher although they may escape relegation.

Remember When: Pictures of Bob Champion winning the Grand National

Pictures: Guisborough-born Bob Champion won the Grand National in remarkable circumstances 33 years ago

We have raided the Mirrorpix archive to find these pictures of when Bob Champion won the Grand National.

It was 6 April 1981 when the Guisborough-born jockey won the race in remarkable circumstances.

Last year, he was number 22 in out list of 50 Great Teessiders - and the entry accompanying it describes what made Bob's victory so special:

The tale of Bob Champion is a classic of triumph over adversity.

Riding high as a successful young jockey in 1979, he received the news he had testicular cancer and may only have a few months to live.

Spurring Champion on in his battle against illness was the dream of winning the Grand National.

And, after months of chemotherapy, he received the all clear and rode Aldaniti in the race in 1981.

The race had a fairytale finish as Champion won in what is often hailed as one of sport’s most moving moments.

“I rode that race for all the people suffering from cancer and for all the people that care for them,” he said.

Champion continued with a successful career.

He also set up the Bob Champion Cancer Trust in 1983, which has raised millions.

The 2014 Grand National takes place tomorrow.

Wearside League: Redcar Athletic set to bring in new trio for Silksworth clash

Redcar Athletic are boosted by three new faces for their Wearside League home clash against Silksworth

Third-placed Redcar Athletic are boosted by three new faces for their Wearside League home clash against Silksworth tomorrow.

The Green Lane side signed outfield players Ben Hugill and Jordan Kirk just before non-league transfer deadline transfer deadline on March 31.

They also snapped up goalkeeper Brennan Slatter as cover for current custodian Matthew Berry, as previous second second choice shot-stopper David Peacock has been forced to retire on medical advice.

Richie Playforth should be available after missing last week’s 3-2 victory over Jarrow.

But he might have to settle for a place on the bench as Sam Webster, Alex Anderson, James Swann and Steven Barker are all after the same starting spot in the line-up.

Second-placed Stockton Town are at home to Ashbrooke Belford House as they look to turn a seven-match winning run into eight games and complete their 10th double of the season.

Town will have to make do without Luke Whittaker, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

But he hopes to be fit for the big game between the top two in a fortnight when Town visit leaders Ryhope, a fixture which could decide the destiny of the title.

Tony Johnson will be available, having missed last Saturday’s 6-2 win against Richmond.

Town need to keep their momentum going with crucial fixtures to follow next week against Sunderland West End and Redcar Athletic, followed by a trip to Hartlepool before they go to Ryhope.

A meeting of bottom seven sides sees Wolviston welcome Boldon.

Darlington targeting second place in Northern Premier League Division One (North)

Finishing as runners-up will guarantee Martin Gray’s side home advantage in a one-off play-off semi

Darlington have targeted a second-place finish in Division One (North) of the Northern Premier League.

Finishing as runners-up will guarantee Martin Gray’s side home advantage in a one-off play-off semi. The priority for now, though, is a home victory over struggling Radcliffe Borough tomorrow.

“We have to make sure we go for that second spot, which is something we’ve talked about since we played Curzon,” said Gray, referring to last month’s 4-0 defeat to the leaders.

“We’ve got five games to go and we have to win all of them, they are all cup finals as far as I am concerned.

“We want second place because we want home advantage.”

Sam Collins insists Hartlepool still have plenty to play for

Veteran defender Sam Collins insists there’s still plenty to play for despite Hartlepool being 10 points adrift of the play-pffs

Veteran defender Sam Collins insists there’s still plenty to play for this season.

Three successive defeats have left Pools 10 points adrift of the League Two play-off places with six games remaining.

“You have to do well in every single game and training session and impress the manager,” said Collins, speaking ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Portsmouth.

“First and foremost we want to win football games because that is what we get paid from the club to do and then see where we finish in the league.

“Come the end of the season, we might be disappointed if we don’t get in the play-offs, which looks more and more unlikely.

“But if we can finish in the top 10 with the young players that we have got, then that is progress.”

Multi-platinum selling Tinie Tempah 'can't wait' for Middlesbrough gig

Tinie Tempah will play at TFM Soundworks on Middlesbrough's Linthorpe Road

Multi-platinum selling rapper Tinie Tempah will play Middlesbrough next week - and he says he “can’t wait” for the Boro date.

More than 1,500 fans have already snapped up tickets to Tuesday’s gig at TFM Soundworks on Middlesbrough’s Linthorpe Road.

The chart-topping artist’s date was described as a “great coup” for the town when it was confirmed earlier this year.

In recent years Tinie - real name Patrick Okogwu - has become one of the most successful British rappers of his generation with hits including Frisky, Written In The Stars and Children Of The Sun.

His debut single Pass Out in 2010 earned him his first number one.

He was recently back at the top of the charts for a fourth time when dance anthem Tsunami (Jump) by DVBBS and Borgeous, featuring Tinie Tempah, stormed into the singles top spot.

Speaking ahead of his Middlesbrough gig, Tinie said: “I can’t wait to come down to Middlesbrough it’s been years since I was last there.

“I’ve got a special set for the Middlesbrough crowd that includes the best songs from the first album, the new album and all the tracks in between. I’m literally counting down the days, hope you guys have your tickets. See you there.”

TFM Soundworks recently tweeted: “It is exciting that we will have a global superstar play Middlesbrough next week!”

And a spokesman for TFM added: “The 21st century has been dominated by a resurgence in UK music taking inspiration from a more urban template.

“The likes of So Solid Crew, Disclosure, Katy B, Chase & Status and many more can all lay claim to bringing the sounds of hip hop, grime, garage, house and dubstep to the masses, but one man has been arguably the most successful of them all in merging this palette with pop. That man is Tinie Tempah.

“After recently celebrating his fourth UK singles chart number one, Tinie’s stock couldn’t be higher after the praise garnered for his 2013 album Demonstration. That followed 2010’s runaway success Disco-overy, featuring the scintillating track Pass Out, which broke him into the mainstream.

“Having won two BRIT Awards, four MOBOs and an Ivor Novello Award, and worked with the likes of Calvin Harris, Rita Ora, 2 Chainz, Swedish House Mafia and Diplo, he remains a national icon.”

Tinie’s Middlesbrough gig adds to a growing list of names heading to TFM Soundworks. Earlier this week it was confirmed that Eighties R&B icon Billy Ocean is to play the venue. The singer, known for hits including Caribbean Queen and When The Going Gets Tough, will come to Middlesbrough on July 17.

Support acts at Tinie’s gig on Tuesday will be Teesside’s Josh Daniel and Bre Musiq.

A limited number of tickets, priced £32.50, are still available from Kalinka Bar, Middlesbrough and online at http://ift.tt/1ltXV9E.

Teesside’s Big Mouth Comedy Club looking forward to a big weekend of gigs in Redcar, Middlesbrough and Saltburn

And now Redcar is set to get in on the act for the first time tonight with Teesside’s Big Mouth Comedy Club looking forward to a big weekend of gigs in Redcar, Middlesbrough and Saltburn.

Big Mouth Comedy Club has been raising the roof at Middlesbrough Town Hall for the past five years.

And tomorrow sees familiar TV faces Steve Shanyaski and Seymour Mace share headline duties at Middlesbrough Town Hall Crypt and Saltburn’s Spa Hotel.

Hebburn star Jason Cook is special guest MC at Middlesbrough, and Alun Cochrane from Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow is Saltburn’s MC.

Carmel Ramsay of Big Mouth Comedy said: “Our gigs in Boro and Saltburn both often sell-out in advance and always go down a storm, and we’ve constantly had people asking us to bring Big Mouth to different places here and there.

“But we’ve always wanted to wait until we’ve found the right venues really.

“Our first night at Guisborough last week couldn’t have gone any better. The audience was just amazing, and we can’t wait to get started at Redcar.

“Guisborough sold out, and tickets have been zipping along for all three gigs here. We’re looking forward to another incredible weekend.”

Last few tickets for Big Mouth Redcar are £10 from Fatso’s and Blink Eyewear in Redcar town centre.

Karanka has four Boro goalkeepers to choose from as Tomas Mejias is passed fit to play

Boro head coach Aitor Karanka says 'I am pleased that I have to make a very difficult decision'

Aitor Karanka says he has four fit goalkeepers to choose from ahead of tomorrow’s game after Tomas Mejias was passed fit to play.

The Spanish goalie dislocated a finger just days after making his Boro debut against Sheffield Wednesday and has yet to add to his one first team appearance.

That could change when Steve McClaren’s Derby visit the Riverside, however.

“I am pleased that I have to make a very difficult decision tomorrow,” said Karanka.

Dimi Konstantopoulos is playing well , Jason Steele is working well, Jayson Leutwiler is working well, Tomas looked like he would be injured for five or six weeks but in three weeks he is fit and showing he is anxious to play and he’s been involved with the team 100%.

“Tomas has trained with us all week and I’m happy how he’s doing. So it’s good to have four to choose from.

“We need to think about the keepers because I have all of them working well now,” he added. “I need to speak with my goalkeeper coach because he’s got all of my goalkeepers fit and ready to play so I am very happy with his work.”

Leo Percovich is Boro’s goalkeeping coach and while there’s no doubt Karanka trusts his judgement, the head coach makes the final decision.

“Leo gives me his feelings but the most important thing for me is the work he does on the training ground,” he said.

“You see the benefits of that work when you see all four keepers are fit and ready to play and you can trust in them 100%.

“For me it would be worse to have just one keeper available because the other three haven’t trained well.”

Aitor Karanka reveals Rhys Williams won't play again for Boro this season

Highly unlikely, though not impossible, that Australia would include someone in World Cup squad who hadn't played competitively since January

Rhys Williams' World Cup dream appears to be over after Aitor Karanka revealed the Socceroo won’t play again for Boro this season.

The 25-year-old suffered a serious Achilles’ heel injury in the draw with Wigan on January 28 and went under the surgeon’s knife a few days later.

Initially, it looked as though the Boro defender was ahead of schedule and last month he said he hoped to be fit and available for selection in time to stake a claim for a place in Australia’s World Cup squad.

But those hopes look to have been dashed with Karanka telling the Gazette: “Rhys is recovering but I don’t think it is possible for him to play this season.”

Realistically, Williams needed to be declared fit for action by the Easter weekend so that he could have got at least three or four games under his belt.

Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou will name his preliminary 30-man World Cup squad no later than May 16 and it’s highly unlikely - though not impossible - that he would include someone who hadn’t played competitively since January.

The players selected will spend a week together at a training camp before a warm-up match against South Africa on May 26.

Postecoglou has to settle on his final squad of 23 players by June 8.

Karanka knows missing out would be a massive personal setback to Williams, who was also ruled out of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa through injury.

“It will be a huge blow if he can’t go to the World Cup, especially as it happened once before,” said the Boro boss.

“It’s the pinnacle of every player’s career and to miss out twice is terrible bad luck, I really feel for him.”

Middlesbrough parents say they waited over an hour for ambulance after toddler sliced head open

Newly-toddling youngster Aiden McLaughlin slipped on to a bolt and gashed open his head, revealing his skull

Parents of a toddler who sliced his head open to the skull say they waited more than an hour for an ambulance to arrive.

Middlesbrough tot Aiden McLaughlin enjoying a trip to Crimdon Dene Holiday Park, near Hartlepool, to celebrate his progress after being born premature at just 24 weeks.

The 20-month-old’s family had gone to the bar to watch the in-house entertainment when the newly-toddling youngster slipped on to a bolt and gashed open his head, revealing his skull.

Staff immediately rang an ambulance at about 8pm but, despite three calls checking on its progress while Aiden slipped in and out of consciousness, it took about an hour and 15 minutes to arrive at the caravan park last Tuesday, March 25, say his mum and dad.

“We’re appalled,” says Sean.

“After Aiden came off his oxygen machines we thought we’d take him on a little holiday and Crimdon is only a half an hour away from home.

“On the second night we thought we’d see what entertainment was on.

“But Aiden slipped and cut his head on a bolt on the stage.

“He started screaming and his mum Kelly picked him up.

“You could see his skull it was that deep.”

The parents bandaged his head with his uncle’s T-shirt to stem the blood pouring from the wound while an employee called the ambulance.

Sean, 30, a full-time carer for Aiden, who lives in the West Lane area of Middlesbrough, said: “We phoned them on three separate occasions, asking where the ambulance was.

“We were thinking ‘how long is this ambulance going to be?’

“I even offered to take him in the car and drive the half an hour to Stockton’s University Hospital of North Tees.

“But we were advised not to in case anything happened on the way and to stay where we were.

“I couldn’t believe what was happening.”

They claim the ambulance arrived at about 9.15pm and his mum Kelly, 30, also a full-time carer for Aiden, accompanied him to Accident and Emergency at North Tees, with his dad following in the car.

After doctors cleaned the injury and stuck the gaping wound together with Steri-Strips - a kind of adhesive stitch - Aiden was discharged and referred to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital the following morning for advice on plastic surgery.

As an operation would set back Aiden’s progress - and mean he may have to return to using an oxygen machine - his parents have decided that they will not go ahead with plastic surgery for Aiden at this point, meaning that he will be left with a scar.

Sean said: “He’s been quite quiet since the accident and he’s not been walking as much as he’s scared.

“It has put him back a little bit.”

Dad Sean added: “For me any 20- month-old should not have to wait over an hour for an ambulance - particularly when they have a cut on their head so severe that they could see his skull.”

Ambulance responses are categorised between life-threatening “red” incidents, which crews should attend within eight minutes or “green” incidents, which should be reached between 20 minutes to an hour.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are aware of the complaint and we are looking into it.”

Grangetown nail device: Teenager arrested in connection with incident released without charge

Explosive experts were called to St George's Road West after the device was found by residents outside their door

A teenager arrested in connection with an incident which saw a nail-studded device left on a family’s doorstep has been released without charge.

A bomb squad was called to St George’s Road West in Grangetown on January 13 after the device was found by residents outside their door.

An 18-year-old man was arrested.

However police have confirmed he has been released with no further action.

Emergency services were called after the device, described as being the size of a video case and studded with nails and with wires leading to a battery, was discovered by the Bradley family outside their front door.

Bomb experts were called in and a police cordon set up around the house and surrounding properties.

Evacuations took place and children and staff from Grangetown Primary - just opposite the scene - were told to stay inside the school building.

Fire crews and the ambulance service also attended the scene and explosives experts from Catterick arrived just before midday.

There they made the suspect item safe.

No controlled explosion was necessary. Forensic teams could be seen going into the house once the package had been declared safe.

The cordon was lifted a short while later and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Ian Bradley, 60, the home’s main resident, said at the time: “I’ve never seen anything like it in my life - it looked like a terrorist bomb.”

He added: “Of course I’m very scared. I definitely thought it was real. It looked like a proper terrorist bomb.”

The family claimed the device had Ian’s son Kenny’s name written on it. They said it said “Mr Kenny” and was followed by two “Xs”.

Cleveland Police said inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Steve McClaren admits Boro return will be special but strange

Derby County boss Steve McClaren says 'I had five great years and worked for some very good people and a great chairman in Steve Gibson'

Steve McClaren admits it will be special but strange as he makes his first return to the Riverside as an opposition boss with Derby.

McClaren guided Boro to Carling Cup glory and into Europe in a golden spell before leaving to join England in 2006.

“It will be special to be back,” he said. “It was the breakthrough for me going from a No 2 to a No 1 and winning something which proved I could make the step.

“I had five great years there and worked for some very good people and a great chairman in Steve Gibson.

“Teesside is a region that needs its football and a successful team. The club is the heartbeat of the place.

“It will be pretty strange for me being in the opposite dugout. I had five great years there. I still live in the area and so I know the people.”

“But,” he insisted, “the total focus for me is on performing and trying to win.

“Boro have been inconsistent this season but they are capable of beating any team in the league.

“Karanka has got them organised, they are harder to beat, play good football and have got dangerous players, good players, so we will need to be at our best and toughest to get a result.”

Stockton Calling: Hear the sounds of Algiers

Will K J Anderson is heading to town later this month for Stockton Calling when Algiers take to the HM Bark Endeavour Stage

A Teesside musician’s new venture is earning rave reviews after less than a year.

Middlesbrough-born Will K J Anderson formed Algiers with like-minded collaborator John Goodwin last year and the duo’s debut album, You’re The Captain, is the first fruit of their labours.

Will, who plays guitar and sings the lead vocals in the band, is currently based in Sheffield but he regularly visits to Teesside to catch up with family, friends and the fortunes of his beloved Boro.

He’s heading to town later this month for Stockton Calling when Algiers take to the HM Bark Endeavour Stage at the day long festival, which takes place on Saturday, April 19.

Will, who attended Prior Pursglove College, in Guisborough, said: “I remember going along to Ayresome Park to go to the kids’ club. At the time I really liked Neil Cox and John Hendrie was a great player. My dad’s a big fan of the Boro and we had season tickets in the North Stand when the club moved to the Riverside Stadium.”

Music, however, is Will’s first love. His first band was the fondly-remembered Teesside outfit Dartz, who had a strong following in the area.

Will and John, the drummer in Algiers, met in Sheffield purely by chance. They formed Algiers and managed to agree a deal with independent label Xtra Mile Recordings.

“When I met John I realised that we are like-minded people and enjoy the same music,” explained Will.

“We struck up a bond very quickly and we love writing music.

“Initially, the aim was just to record an album. For this album to come out and Xtra Mile agreeing to get behind it and put it out is a massive bonus.

“We put a lot of effort into that record but it’s been a really enjoyable, rewarding time.”

Algiers road-tested the album last month, embarking on a mini-tour that proved to be very successful. The future promises plenty more shows but the lads are already thinking of a follow up release to You’re The Captain.

“The thing we like doing is writing” said Will. “Some time soon we will get to point where we record another album, it’s what we aspire to do.”

Exciting new bands heading to Stockton for the return of Sunday Live

KU and The Storytellers will play host to the likes of Wolf Alice, Circa Waves, Wild Cub, As Elephants Are and Natives

Some of the most exciting new bands in music are heading to Stockton for the return of Sunday Live.

KU and The Storytellers will play host to the likes of Wolf Alice, Circa Waves, Wild Cub, As Elephants Are and Natives amongst others on Sunday, May 4.

Sunday Live debuted in 2013 with the aim of drawing some of the most mouth-watering musical talents to Teesside. The 1975, one of the biggest bands of last year, headlined and New York punk band Skaters and indie rock favourites Twisted Wheel also played to a sold out crowd.

This year’s event sees the single most blogged about band in 2013 headline KU. Wolf Alice are currently heading the way for the current Brit-Pop-esque revival that has been seeping in to the airwaves and national conscience for the last year.

The London foursome captures youthful joys and adolescent angst with breathy verses and raucous choruses backed by stuttering and pounding drums and chunky guitar riffs.

Major buzz band Circa Waves, who are currently on the NME Tour along with Interpol and Temples, will also perform at KU.

The Storytellers will be headlined by Nashville, Tennessee act Wild Cub.

“Last year’s Sunday Live was a brilliant night; The 1975 blew the crowd away and went on to have a number one album and are now playing venues like The Royal Albert Hall,” said Jimmy Beck, from Ku and Storytellers.

“We can see acts like Wolf Alice, Circa Waves and Natives going on to do similar, so bringing them to Teesside on one bill is really exciting.”

Tickets are £9 in advance from seetickets.com or in person from The Storytellers and Sound It Out Records.

Broken-down abattoir lorry causes road chaos in Boosbeck

Lorry was trying to leave the Banaras Halal Meats (BHM) slaughterhouse in Boosbeck when it stopped in the road

A lorry leaving an abattoir caused chaos in an East Cleveland village after it broke down half way into the road.

The lorry was trying to leave the Banaras Halal Meats (BHM) slaughterhouse in Boosbeck yesterday afternoon when it stopped in the road.

Villagers and then police had to help traffic pass the stranded lorry which, residents claim, had animal byproducts dripping from it onto the road. Sawdust was later spread beneath the vehicle to cover over any leakage.

The lorry broke down at about 2.30pm, but efforts to restart were ongoing more than two hours later.

And there was more traffic mayhem when a lorry bringing sheep into the abattoir found its way blocked by the departing truck. After several attempts, it eventually inched its way into the yard.

School buses had to turn around and were diverted through Margrove Park as the lorry resolutely refused to budge.

Residents looked on as police continued to control the traffic and effiorts to restart the broken down vehicle continued.

Among those watching was Nev Brown, who has campaigned fiercely against the abattoir opening.

The £3m slaughterhouse has faced major opposition from locals after plans were unveiled in 2011 to revive the dormant facility. Despite a two-year court battle, the site began operating last February.

Mr Brown said: “It’s shocking that this sort of thing can happen. This situation is getting out of control now.

“We’ve been through hell in this village and this proves our point - it’s the wrong place for it.

“I’ve been taking pictures and video of this and will be sending it off to the council’s highways and planning departments.”

Villager Nick Brown claimed that when the lorry first stalled, it leaked “blood and gore” onto the road.

“It absolutely stank,” he said.

“Local people had to direct the traffic before the police arrived.”

No-one from BHM was available for comment, although the company has previously said its “substantial investment” in Boosbeck would result in “a first-class facility.”
