Hilton and Ingleby Barwick: Walk with Bob Woodhouse

One of this area's assets is the range of coastal and countryside settings close at hand, and this is certainly true of Teesside's southern fringe beyond Ingleby Barwick

Starting from the Falcon Inn at Hilton we walk a few yards in a westerly direction past ivy-covered cottages and on the right hand bend cross with care to follow the bridleway in a southerly direction.

There are two metal field gates along the first stretch as we walk between hedges to reach open fields with views of Middleton on Leven directly ahead.

At the bottom of the downhill slope we bear to the right with a view of Castle Hill across the River Leven.

Keeping to our right on the footpath we make our way through Scriddles Wood and follow steps and duck-boards above the Leven to a stile and open country.

Continuing around the lower field edge steps lead into Hilton Wood where tree roots and damaged timber work present an uneven surface before we head into open country and under the high arches of the A19.

We leave the firm track at a post to walk close to the river. A flight of steps lead into woodland and after an area of open ground we bear to the right through another wooded area.

Our pathway then reaches a grassy slope where we walk diagonally right to pass between posts and continue ahead to a wooden field gate.

After joining a track we turn left to pass Leven Close Farm on our left and continue ahead to reach the A1044 Low Lane.

Turning right along the roadside verge, we walk as far as the Fox Covert Inn where we turn left into Barwick Lane.

We soon pass a former Methodist Chapel and the Old Mill on our right and continue ahead to Sober Hall Avenue.

At this point we turn right to cross Hawkridge Close and Brendon Grove before reaching Barwick Way.

Crossing with care we walk ahead between wooden fences and make our way over a foot bridge to a wooden gate.

Turning right, we pass Little Maltby Farm on our left and continue ahead to the A1044 where we turn left towards Thornaby.

At the junction with High Lane we turn right and after about 400 yards turn right again on the approach to White House Farm.

The lane runs under the A19 and we then cross a stile on our right into the field.

Continuing ahead we cross another stile and walk ahead to a metal field gate.

A hedge lines our left side as we reach a stile and turn right along the next field edge.

After crossing a wooden footbridge we bear right beside a gully and pass through a series of seven stiles on the approach to Falcon Way at Hilton.

Walking ahead across Morberries we follow the roadway round to the right to reach our starting point at the Falcon Inn.
