FIFA delegation arrives in Gaza after Israeli ‘obstacles’

A delegation from football governing body FIFA arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday after being blocked by Israeli authorities for hours, a Palestinian football official has said.

“The FIFA delegation arrived through the Erez crossing despite obstacles by the Israeli authorities, which blocked them for three hours,” deputy head of the Palestinian Football Association, Ibrahim Abu Selim, told The Anadolu Agency.

The delegation, led by FIFA’s senior development manager for Asia, David Borja, is visiting the Gaza Strip to inspect stadiums that FIFA helped re-grass at a total cost of $1 million.

During Israel’s recent onslaught on the Gaza Strip, at least 30 sports facilities were totally destroyed, with the Palestinian government reporting $3 million in losses.

By the time the offensive ended on August 26, more than 2,160 Gazans had been killed, mostly civilians, including 32 athletes, according to figures released by the Palestinian government.

Match report: Boro U21s 1 Stoke City 4

BORO’s young guns slumped to a heavy 4-1 defeat against Stoke City tonight as their Under-21 Premier League Cup hopes were shattered.

After a three-week festive break, the Teessiders were caught cold by three first-half goals in only five minutes as the Potters ran riot at Victoria Park.

Lead coach Paul Jenkins welcomed Bryn Morris and Bradley Fewster back into his starting line-up after the pair’s respective loan spells at Burton Albion and Preston ended.

There were also starts for England Under-17s star Hayden Coulson, defender Adam Jackson and forward Charlie Wyke, who spent three months on loan at Hartlepool United earlier this season.

But in a first half to forget, Boro’s youngsters were put to the sword in merciless fashion by an impressive Stoke side who currently sit joint bottom of the Under-21 Premier League.

It took eight minutes for Boro to work their first opportunity with Wyke testing Potters goalkeeper Daniel Gyollai, but that was as good as it got for the hosts who went on to concede three quick-fire goals.

Stoke took the lead on 10 minutes when striker George Waring took advantage of a mistake from Boro’s Callum Cooke and rifled the ball past Connor Ripley.

Moments later the Potters extended their lead as Ollie Shenton headed home unmarked from a corner, and then straight from the kick-off Shenton fed Waring again, with the towering Stoke front man flicking the ball into the net.

Totally shell-shocked, Boro slowly began to find their feet in the game but it was Stoke who almost grabbed a fourth on 25 minutes when Eddy Lecygne’s free-kick crept wide.

But on the half hour Lecygne got the goal his display deserved, racing clear of the Boro defence and striking past Ripley to give the visitors an unassailable lead.

To their credit, Boro didn’t let their heads go down and pulled one back three minutes later when Fewster flicked on to Wyke, with the youngster fizzing a shot into the net.

Trailing 4-1 at the break, Boro gathered themselves in the second period with Jenkins bringing on Ryan Brobbel at the break in place of teenager Coulson.

On 55 minutes Fewster almost reduced the deficit but his powerful drive was pushed away by Gyollai, while Jones fired over as Boro toiled in the final third.

Then on 70 minutes Brobbel weaved in from the right and rattled off the crossbar, before Fewster himself hit the woodwork.

But it wasn’t to be as Boro’s youngsters suffered an evening to forget at Victoria Park.

BORO: Ripley, Bennett, Burn (c), Jackson, Coulson (Brobbel 46), Morris, Tinkler, Jones, Cooke (Kitching 59), Fewster, Wyke. Subs not used: Coddington, Weledji, Maloney.

Take a look at this radical revamp of the 18th Century Cross Keys pub

Raise a glass!

A well-known pub and restaurant - with views of Roseberry Topping - has had a radical revamp.

The Cross Keys is now inviting you along to enjoy its new look following a week long refurbishment in December.

The early 18th century alehouse is situated on the road between Nunthorpe and Guisborough - the A171 - and boasts new furniture and decor.

And the end product, say owners Chef & Brewer, is a brighter venue that will serve classic pub dishes such as Yorkshire sausage and mash, slow-cooked pork belly and creamy fish pie.

The Cross Keys also serves a new lunch menu - with dishes also including hand-battered fish and chips and wholetail scampi from £4.99.

Phil Scott, general manager at the Cross Keys, said: “We’re delighted with the quality of our latest renovation and can’t wait to show off our new look.

“We look forward to welcoming returning and new guests alike.”

The Keys is open between Monday and Saturday 11am and 11pm and on Sunday between noon and 10pm.

Food is served between 11.30am and 10pm Monday to Saturday and between 11.30am to 9.30pm on Sundays.

FA Cup draw: Boro handed trip to Premier League giants Manchester City

Boro have been handed a trip to Premier League champions Manchester City in the FA Cup fourth round.

Aitor Karanka’s men will head to the Etihad Stadium later this month to face Manuel Pellegrini’s multi-millionaires in a tasty cup duel.

The Teessiders will no doubt be cheered on by an army of supporters who have already travelled far and wide this season to cheer on their side.

Boro booked their place in the fourth round after a 2-0 win over Barnsley on Saturday, while City toiled to a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Wednesday.

Boro’s last faced City in January 2010 in an FA Cup third round tie at the Riverside.

On that day Roberto Mancini’s side prevailed after a Benjani goal on the stroke of half-time.

But happier memories for Boro fans against City include the memorable 8-1 win at the Riverside in May 2008, with Afonso Alves bagging a hat-trick.

Ticket details for the trip to City will be confirmed by the club in due course.

Thieves targeted several vehicles in Middlesbrough

Thieves targeted several vehicles in late-night raids in Middlesbrough - smashing windows and stealing the contents.

The offences took place between midnight and 2am on Sunday in Martonside Way, across the way from James Cook University Hospital and Hutton Road in Longlands.

Thieves struck again on Sunday into Monday on Abingdon Road, Saltswell Road and Lansdowne Road in the town centre area - as well as Merlin Road and Bowfell Road in the Pallister Park area.

It is believed that the thieves may have used a motorbike as their getaway in some of the incidents.

They gained access to the vehicles by smashing the car windows.

Police are now reminding motorists to keep all valuables that are left in vehicles out of sight.

Anyone with information about the incidents is asked to contact Acting Detective Sergeant Tom Legg on the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Almost 50 local jobs put at risk as clothing retailer Bank enters administration

Dozens of Teesside staff at fashion chain Bank are facing an uncertain start to 2015 after the company went into adminstration.

More than 1,500 jobs at the loss-making business have been put at risk - including 49 at three Teesside branches.

The Bury-based company, which operates 84 stores mainly in the Midlands, North of England and Scotland, was part of JD Sports Fashion until November.

It employs 20 at its Teesside Shopping Park, 14 at Middlesbrough’s Cleveland Shopping Centre and 15 in Darlington.

Deloitte was appointed as administrator on Monday after a review of the business determined that a solvent turnaround would not be possible.

All stores are open as normal and no redundancies have been made, while Deloitte considers potential interest in the business from several parties.

Bill Dawson, a partner in Deloitte’s restructuring services practice, said: “Bank has struggled in a highly competitive segment of the retail industry and has been loss-making for a number of years.”

He added that additional sale discounts will be implemented later this week.

Mr Dawson said: “The company has already been approached by several parties who have expressed an interest in the business and the administrators are trading as a going concern with a view to progressing these options and seeking further interested parties for some or all of the business.”

Bank was founded by Andy Scott - a former Macclesfield Town footballer - in 1994 and largely sells branded fashion items aimed at the youth market.

JD bought the chain from private equity owners Phoenix Equity Partners and management for £18.5m in 2007.

In November it disposed of the business to HMV owner Hilco, a retail turnaround business, under terms which were not disclosed.

JD’s fashion division, which includes the more successful Scotts brand, recently slumped to a half-year loss of £8.2m despite continued efforts to revive Bank, including through the appointment of a new management team.

Bank has been offering discounts of up to 70% as it attempts to attract shoppers in the face of fierce competition.

The company’s collapse comes a week after parcel courier firm City Link went into administration, costing the jobs of 2,400 workers.

Guilt-ridden child abuser jailed for eight years after confessing to historic crimes

A guilt-ridden child abuser was jailed for eight years today after he confessed to crimes which were more than a decade old.

Suicidal John Plews might never have been brought to justice if he had not owned up to a mental health worker, then police.

The 53-year-old said he was racked with guilt over sexually abusing an underage girl several years ago, Teesside Crown Court heard.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had never told anyone what she suffered at his hands, thinking no one would believe her.

Prosecutor Richard Bennett described a series of escalating sexual attacks, culminating in a rape.

Now an adult, the woman said she tried to bury what Plews did, and his confession forced her to relive memories of the abuse.

She said in a statement that he manipulated her and she since lost confidence, self esteem and trust in relationships.

Plews, of Hill Crescent, Redcar, admitted six counts of indecent assault, three of indecency with a child, one of rape - his first offences.

Peter Wishlade, defending, said: “I have not met a more remorseful or guilt-consumed defendant.

“He could simply have gone on with living his life and perhaps never been brought to book.

“He knows what he did was entirely reprehensible, entirely wrong, unacceptable.

“He could no longer cope with the guilt and remorse. He brings about the prosecution on to his own shoulders.”

Judge Peter Armstrong said the crimes might never have come to light if it had not been for Plews’ genuine remorse and admissions.

He told Plews: “She was particularly vulnerable when this abuse took place.”

He jailed Plews for eight years and gave him an indefinite sexual offences prevention order banning him from contact with girls under 16.

Plews will be on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life.

Stockton-born Jordan Nobbs signs new long-term contract with Arsenal Ladies

Teessider Jordan Nobbs has been rewarded for her fine form this season with a new long-term contract at Arsenal Ladies.

The Stockton-born midfielder, daughter of ex-Hartlepool United defender Keith, joined the Gunners from Sunderland in 2010 and has since become a key performer for club and country.

With 16 international caps to her name and an impressive tally of 20 goals in 46 league matches for Arsenal, Nobbs today signed a new long-term deal that will keep her in the capital for the best years of her career.

“Jordan has developed into one of the most talented young players in the country,” Arsenal Ladies manager Pedro Martinez Losa said.

“She has fantastic technical ability and a great character too. She has a great future in the game and I believe she will be one of the best players in the women’s game for a long time to come.

“We’re delighted she’s decided to commit her future to Arsenal.”

Jordan added: “I’m excited to have signed a new contract with Arsenal. There’s a great feeling around the team heading into the 2015 season and we feel we can come back to challenging on all fronts this year.

“I’m looking forward to being part of that.”

The 22-year-old was back in Teesside in August as part of the England side that beat Sweden in a friendly at Hartlepool United’s Victoria Park.

Walking out on the same pitch where her father made more than 300 appearances between 1985 and 1995, Nobbs admitted pulling on the Three Lions shirt at Pools’ home ground was among her proudest moments.

Nobbs joined Norton and Stockton Football Club as a youngster, before bursting through the ranks at Sunderland Ladies and earning a big move to the capital in 2010.

Arsenal Ladies sit fourth in the league, five points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

'You are not leaving this house alive': Dad heard chilling taunt down phone as daughter was being strangled

A dad who took a phone call from his daughter as she was being strangled heard her attacker telling her “You are not leaving this house alive”.

The father alerted police who raced to a Middlesbrough address where they arrested her partner James Brogan, 34, for assaults and a threat to kill.

Brogan attacked her when they returned from a night out on November 1 after he accused her of flirting with other men.

He said that they drank two-thirds of a bottle of whisky before going out and they visited a number of pubs.

He took her to his father’s house after they could not find the keys to their own home, and he grabbed her by the throat in a bedroom and he began strangling her.

Prosecutor Rachel Masters told Teesside Crown Court that Brogan claimed to police that he found a number of text messages on her phone from other men.

He could not recall all the threats he had made but he accepted that the incident got out of hand.

Miss Masters said that Brogan was strangling the woman as she attempted to phone her father, who heard him say “You are not leaving this house alive.”

She added: “She had a very real fear that the threat would be carried out because he had his hands around her neck strangling her.

“In a victim impact statement that day she said that she had no intention of carrying on the relationship, but she now says that she does not want a restraining order.”

Since the incident Brogan had been staying at a bail hostel in Newcastle, and she had contacted him by phone texts but he had not replied.

Gary Wood, defending, told the court: “He has made some self-referrals to combat the challenges that he has to his mental health.

“He would certainly benefit from supervision from the Probation Service.”

The judge told Brogan that he was in many ways a responsible individual with a good work record.

Recorder Bernard Gateshill QC added: “But certainly on this occasion you were unable when in drink to control your temper, and you lost your temper on your then partner.

“You were totally and wholly out of control, and this was a serious matter involving you assaulting her and making a threat to kill her.”

Brogan, of Maryjacques Court, Middlesbrough, was given a four months’ jail sentence suspended for 24 months with supervision, six months’ alcohol treatment and a Building Better Relationships course of 24 weekly group sessions and six individual sessions.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating and one of making a threat to kill.

Two killed and 38 rescued after building collapses in Nairobi, Kenya

Two people died when an eight-storey residential building collapsed in Nairobi, Kenya.

Thirty-eight others were rescued.

Nairobi police official Benson Kibue said one of the victims died on arrival at hospital and a child's body was retrieved from the rubble in the lower-income Huruma area of the capital.

Kenya Red Cross official Nick Thiongo said dozens of the building's residents could not be traced.

Nairobi County chief planner Tom Odongo said the upper floors were being built in quick succession, putting pressure on the lower floors.

Last month eight people died when a building collapsed in Kaloleni, another lower-income area of Nairobi.

Because of high demand for housing in Nairobi, some property developers often bypass building regulations to cut costs and maximise profits.

The European Left’s War On Christianity

0 It was an attack of unreasoning rage and unrelenting hatred on one of the world’s greatest symbols of love and peace, life and hope.

On Christmas Day in the heart of Catholic Christianity, St. Peter’s Square in Rome, the leftist radical and militant feminist group, Femen, staged another of its outrageous “happenings” against its favourite target, the Catholic Church. On one of Christianity’s holiest days, a Femen member, Iana Aleksandrovna Azhdanova, a Ukrainian citizen, invaded the square’s famous nativity scene and seized the statuette of the Baby Jesus. The scandalous act occurred shortly after Pope Francis had given his traditional Christmas greeting to the crowd of faithful when many people were still present on the square.

“Femen’s website says the woman was protesting as part of its anti-clerical ‘Massacre of the Innocents’ campaign contesting religions’ “maniacal desire to control women’s fertility’,” reported Reuters.

Femen originated in Ukraine in 2008 where it opposed Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Orthodox Church, which it regards as Putin’s ally. The women’s rights group, international in membership, is perhaps most famously known for performing their protests, or “happenings,” as it calls them, bare-breasted.

Azhdanova was no exception. After removing her shirt, she appeared topless in the creche with the words “God is woman” written in English on her exposed chest. At other ‘happenings’, onlookers have been treated to such aggressive slogans as ‘my body is my weapon’, ‘religion is slavery’, ‘God is dead’, ‘f**k church’, and ‘women’s rights first’.

Fortunately, a Vatican policeman was able to stop Azhdanova and recover the statuette before she could carry it off. He led her away, covering her nakedness with his policeman’s cloak. Azhdanova was arrested by Vatican authorities and accused her of “vilification of religion, obscene acts in public and theft,” was later released freed.

“[The group has] intentionally, repeatedly and gravely violated the right of the faithful to see their legitimate religious convictions respected,” said Father Frederico Lombardi, a Vatican spokesman.

While much attention has been paid to the danger creeping Islamisation presents to European societies, the threat militant secular humanism poses to Western civilization is sometimes overlooked. It is largely this leftist secularism, however, that is responsible for having pushed Christianity in Western Europe out of the public space and the marketplace of ideas to society’s fringes, by such measures as banning Christian symbols in the classrooms and nativity scenes in public buildings, among others.

This impulse to de-Christianise Europe is so strong and has enjoyed such success over the past decades that the European Union’s constitution does not even recognise the continent’s Christian roots. As a result, exposure to Christianity is now confined primarily to the churches, where, the left hopes, it will atrophy.

But even in its holy sanctuaries, Christianity is not safe from the radical left. Militant atheists are violating, even physically invading, churches and other sacred Christian places to erase Europe’s last ties to the religion that formed it. And the Femen are the best known storm troopers of this sacrilegious movement.

Nowhere in Europe has Femen conducted its anti-Catholic campaign more vigorously and “gravely and repeatedly violated” the rights and “legitimate religious convictions” of the Catholic faithful than in France, where it is now based. The reason for this is that there exists among the French left a greater tolerance than in other European countries for anti-Christian acts that dates back to the French Revolution. During that great upheaval, churches and cathedrals, such as Paris’s famous Notre Dame, were turned into ‘Temples of Reason’ to reflect the new atheistic thinking. And ceremonies celebrating the revolutionaries’ new goddess, Reason, replaced the traditional mass.

This long, two hundred-year history of anti-Catholicism and anti-clericalism is responsible for producing in France the current environment of intolerance towards Christianity. This intolerance, found especially among leftist and liberal political politicians and media elites, in turn, has been conducive to Femen’s anti-Christian activities.

“The Femen thus know that they are able to count on the support of a certain number of opinion leaders, media outlets and intellectual backing,” wrote Julie Graziani, a spokesperson for an association of young French Catholics, in Le Figaro.

It is also this negative tolerance that has allowed Femen activists to escape almost unscathed any legal punishment in French courts. The most recent example occurred only days before the Saint Peter Square incident. A Femen siren, Eloise Bouton, received a one-month suspended sentence from a French judge for a “happening” she staged in Paris’s St. Madeleine church in December, 2013.

Using the customary Femen tactics of “caricature, provocation, blasphemy, and intolerance” to garner media attention, Bouton had invaded St. Madeleine several days before Christmas (these women must really have something against the birth of Jesus) and took up a position (bare-breasted, of course) before the altar and the astonished eyes of about a dozen parishioners and choir members present.

Wearing a biblical-like head-covering to appear like the Holy Mother Mary, Bouton proceeded to mimic an abortion, leaving pieces of bloody calf liver on the altar steps to symbolise the aborted foetus of Jesus. Bouton concluded her act of profanation “`a la sauce Femen,” as one French journalist called it, by urinating on the floor. (A similar, blasphemous “happening” occurred only days later during Christmas mass in Germany’s ancient Cologne cathedral. A Femen sitting in a front row pew suddenly disrobed and jumped, bare-breasted and screaming, on to the altar with “I am God” emblazoned on her chest).

As per Femen custom, Bouton’s bare chest and stomach were also not left bare. This time, they displayed the message “343 salopes” (sluts). This lovely communication refers to a manifesto by 343 women calling for the decriminalisation of abortion. On her back, in English, was written the anti-Christian message: “Christmas is annulled. Jesus is aborted.” Bouton was convicted on the charge of “sexual exhibition.”

Unsurprisingly, Bouton believes she did nothing wrong. Her defense was that she was carrying out a political act and not a sexual one. Femen’s politics uses the nude female body as a placard “to convey a message” and “not to seduce.” Bouton said she had wanted less “to shock” with her nudity than to provoke a realization about abortion rights, not “to create an emotional reaction but a reflection.”

It is, however, difficult to comprehend Bouton’s thinking. How is going into a church a few days before Christmas and standing bare-breasted before the altar while simulating an abortion of the infant Jesus not going to shock and create “an emotional reaction” among Christians and not cause them to feel their private, spiritual sphere and sense of sacredness have been violated? The same could be said about the attempted theft of the Jesus statuette in Rome.
