Match report: Final - Middlesbrough 2 Bolton 1

Middlesbrough picked up their first major trophy in Cardiff on February 29, 2004.

Two early goals and nerves of steel put earlier woes firmly in the past as the packed Millenium Stadium crowd witnessed the highlight of a golden era for Boro.

Here's how the Gazette reported on that historic league cup final.

Sheer bliss!

Boro finally put 128 years of failure to rest on the most glorious afternoon that Teesside has surely ever witnessed.

We may have had no fingernails left, thousands of hearts were about to give up beating, while there'll be long queues at doctors' surgeries this week for blood pressure tablets.

But maybe you have to suffer the pain to taste the ecstasy - and it doesn't get any better than this.

The boys did it. They damn well did it.

Boro have won a trophy at last and we're all checking our passports in preparation for next season's trip into Europe.

A whole new generation of young Josephs, Bolos and Gaizkas will be born on Teesside before the end of the year.

Bringing home the Carling Cup was well worth the long wait and the ecstatic scenes scenes that greeted the final whistle - with the celebrations which followed - will live in our memories for the rest of our lives.

Few of us would have expected the game to unfold in the way in which it did because Boro effectively had the cup won after seven stunning minutes.

Two glorious goals - with Joseph Job to the fore in both of them - should have left Bolton on their knees.

The wonderful start that we all dreamed about on Saturday night arrived after only one minute and 45 seconds.

Gaizka Mendieta started the move on the right and brought in Bolo Zenden with a defence-splitting pass out to the left.

The Dutchman made space before hammering an intelligent, low cross right through to the Bolton goalmouth, which was perfect for Job to ghost in and stab home at the far post.

Before we could catch our breaths, Boro had the opportunity to make it two from the penalty spot.

Job turned quickly inside the box after picking up a low through ball from Mendieta and was tripped by Emerson Thome as he prepared to go clear. It was a clear-cut penalty but maybe a brave decision by Mike Riley to award it as such a crucial stage.

Once the referee had waved away Bolton's ten-man protest, Zenden stepped forward to take the kick but slipped as he reached the ball, and he must have been mightily relieved to see his straight-struck shot rebound high into the net off Jussi Jaaskelainen's boot as the keeper dived to the right.

You had to kick yourself because the Cup was apparently in the bag with 83 minutes to play still remaining.

As Boro battled to hold their nerve, they continued to create on the break and might have scored a third goal when a dangerous cross from Juninho was screwed over his own bar by Thome.

Yet the game turned dramatically just two minutes later when Juninho lost the ball on the right.

Kevin Davies received the ball with his back to goal, spun wide round Gareth Southgate but was still as a narrow angle to the goal. So much so that when he unleashed a strong low drive, it looked easy meat for Mark Schwarzer.

But the keeper inexplicably fumbled the shot and there was agony for Boro and their travelling faithful when the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Before Boro could settle again, they were being ripped apart by rampant Bolton attacks.

Jay Jay Okocha sent a dipping free kick onto the roof of Boro's net, which was the start of a spell of pressure that needed every hand to the pumps as Bolton regularly got six men into the box in apparent non-stop attacks.

Bolton were denied by the inside of Boro's left-hand post when Per Frandsen's shot came back off the woodwork and then Schwarzer made a remarkable save from the rebound by smotheirng Youri Djorkarff's follow-up shot when it looked certain the Frenchman would score.

On 32 minutes Ugo Ehiogu got up to head away a Bruno N'Gotty free kick by Djorkaeff picked up the loose ball and fired it niches wide of Boro's left-hand post.

Schwarter then fully redeemed himself with a second fantastic save, again from Djorkaeff, following a mis-kick from Southgate.

Boro were forced to operate on automatic pilot throughout a torrid 15-minute spell, but they somehow kept Bolton at bay and then afterwards always had a slight edge.

The pressure was broken in 37 minutes when Job made a strong run through the middle and linked up with George Boateng before Mendieta fired well wide from a good position.

Schwarzer then made another fine save from a 30-yard piledriver from Okocha as Bolton finished the half strongly.

During the interval there was good reason to assume that Boro might not hang on, but in fact they found new inner strength and were the better side throughout the second half - even though we gained a dozen grey hairs every time Bolton pushed forward.

As Boro reasserted themselves, they created the best chance of the half when Job released Mendieta, who ran clear before chipping over the advancing Jaaskelainen and over the bar.

Nolan wasted a chance for Bolton when heading straight into Schwarzer's arms from a Nicky Hunt cross, but otherwise all the best chances throughout the rest of the half belonged to Boro.

Jaaskelainen made a fine save from a Mendieta free kick and then, as Bolton poured forward in the final ten minutes, Boro created a handful of great openings on the break.

Juninho fired wide after being put through by substitute Michael Ricketts, Mendieta needed too much time after being set up by Juninho and then Ricketts fired straight at Jaaskelainen follwing another pass from Juninho.

Four minutes of added time caused more missed heartbeats, but at the final whistle nobody could argue that Boro deserved to bring the trophy back to Teesside.

As Steve McClaren said afterwards, there were 12 heroes out there.

Maybe none did better than Zenden, who enjoyed his finest hour in a Boro shirt, with his marvellous defensive work supporting his effectiveness on the break.

Mendieta and Juninho also did well on the break after Job's wonderful early show.

In midfield, George Boateng was a colossus, tackling everything that moved.

When the defence was under pressure, every man did his job with Southgate a tower of strength from beginning to end and Ehiogu enjoying a magnificent second half.

Now the club must move forward, after breaking a 128-year hoodoo, and if it is going to get better than this, the I, for one, can't wait.

Arab League convenes to discuss Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque

Al-Aqsa MosqueThe Arab League is to hold an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss the escalating Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque, including proposed legislation to impose Israeli guardianship over the third holiest site for Muslims.

Ambassador of the Palestinian Authority in Cairo Barakat Al-Farrah explained that: “The permanent membership of the State of Palestine filed a call to the Arab League to hold the meeting.”

In a statement, Al-Farrah noted that the call invited all permanent members to attend the meeting in order to discuss the escalating Israeli aggressions against Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Al-Farrah reiterated that if the Israeli settlers, under the protection of Israeli occupation forces, are freely allowed to continuously storm the Mosque then this could trigger a wave of violence in the region. “This might be a religious conflict with unneeded consequences,” he warned.

The Israeli Knesset held a discussion on Tuesday about replacing Jordanian guardianship over Al-Aqsa Mosque with Israeli control.

During the Knesset debate, extremist Knesset member Miri Regev from the Likud Party challenged the right of Muslims to their holy site. “Why can a Muslim cry out loud in his own language that ‘there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his prophet and messenger,’ yet a Jew cannot enter the Temple Mount and recite out loud ‘Hear O Israel the Lord our God the Lord is One?’” Regev asked, concluding that, “he who gives up on the [Temple] Mount will be left without a home.”

A woman is due to appear in court accused of biting another woman’s nose off at a wake.

The 20-year-old woman was today charged with two counts of section 18 wounding and two counts of possession of an offensive weapon.

The charges were made in connection with an assault on a 23-year-old woman at Guisborough Quoit Club on Tuesday night.

A wake for 19-year-old Guisborough footballer Jordan Dowson was being held at the time. He died in a car accident earlier this month.

The 23-year-old woman was assaulted outside the club and had her nose bitten off. She was taken to Middlesbrough’s James Cook University Hospital.

The 20-year-old woman is due to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

US in new crusade war on democracy: Analyst

The United States has embarked on a “new crusade” war on democracy across the globe, an analyst writes in a column for the Press TV website.

“On the eve of the 100th anniversary of World War I, the US has embarked on a new crusade – to make the world unsafe for democracy,” Kevin Barrett wrote on Wednesday.

He said the US is determined to “destroy democracy in Iran, Russia, and Latin America”, due to the failure of the “international bankers” running the US government to “buy enough votes to impose their will on every country.”

“So democracy is fine – as long as voters elect the New World Order candidate. But if they vote for a candidate who doesn’t suit the oligarchs, get ready for a coup!” wrote Barrett.

He said the US slaughtered 3.5 million Vietnamese and nearly one million Cambodians under cover of defending democracy in Southeast Asia.

Barrett added that the US democratic plots – wars and sanctions – in the Middle East have left millions of Iraqis dead.

He said the “banksters” will unseat “any government that stands up to them – even in the USA”, citing the assassination of former President John F. Kennedy before the end of his term in 1963.

“The New World Order banksters seek to overthrow democratically-elected governments all over the world precisely because they do care who makes and enforces the laws,” Barrett wrote.

He said the “smiling Mickey Mouse mask” of the New World Order has fallen away and that “the bloodthirsty grin of satanic banksters bent on establishing an Orwellian one-world dictatorship” has been revealed.

Work with charities and the business community earn Dave Allen the Best New Business Tees Valley award

A communications specialist has won a Best New Business gong for his community work.

Dave Allen set up his PR company, Dave Allen Communications, after he was made redundant from a 17-year run as Middlesbrough Football Club’s press officer.

He still has strong links with the club, but it was his work with charities and the business community that earned him the Best New Business Tees Valley award, which he collected at his “old stomping ground” - the Riverside Stadium.

Dave said: “I knew I’d been shortlisted, but I didn’t expect to win as my business isn’t community-based. I’m absolutely delighted.”

Dave also does work for the Teesside Philanthropic Foundation and the Finley Cooper Fund, which both have their roots on Teesside.

Brian Havelock happy to have Richard Hall on board at Redcar Bears

27 Feb 2014 12:30

Redcar Bears back up to full strength again following the capture of Northallerton-born Richard Hall who lives in Bedale

Richard Hall (blue helmet colour) pictured racing against Redcar during his time with Sheffield - now he has joined the Ecco Finishing Bears

Club supremo Brian Havelock has revealed he scoured the world seeking the final piece of his 2014 Redcar Bears jigsaw before finding him right on his doorstep.

The Ecco Finishing Bears were rocked last week when Australian star Kozza Smith was prevented from taking his place in the side because of visa problems.

But the team is now back up to full strength again following the capture of Northallerton-born Richard Hall who lives in Bedale.

The 29-year-old three-times British Finalist, who rode for Sheffield last year, and finished with a 6.97 average, has a wealth of experience and was a star of Peterborough Panthers’ Elite League-winning side of 2006.

He is best known among many Bears fans for winning the South Tees Silver Helmet individual crown in spectacular fashion that season.

“It was a big disappointment to lose Kozza,” admitted Havelock, “but I can sympathise with him.

“The only visa he was eligible for wouldn’t have allowed him any guest rides, doubling up opportunities or open meetings and that didn’t make it viable for him.

“I tried all over the world to get a replacement once it became clear Kozza was out of the equation.

“I spoke to two riders in Australia, two Germans, two Danes and one in Argentina.

“I actually had a deal done with Pepe Franc too, but he came back the next day and wanted to alter some of the terms.

“I told him that was the deal and if he decided he didn’t like it, it was off.

“But I’m happy to have Richard on board. He’ll be fairly consistent, especially at home.

“And the difference is that he wants to ride for us - that’s very important.

“Some riders want this and want that and think they are the best in the world.”

Meanwhile new Bears No 1 Richard Lawson has been called up by Great Britain to race against the Rest of the World in the Ben Fund Bonanza meeting at Leicester on Sunday, March 9.

And new Team GB manager Alun Rossiter has hinted that a good performance next month could lead to further full international appearances.

Lawson was drafted in after Lewis Bridger pulled out, saying his equipment wouldn’t be ready and he didn’t want to go into the meeting half-heartedly.

Rossiter said: “I appreciate his honesty with that, and I’ve therefore called up Richard who is a rider who was always in my thoughts.

“I already know what several of the more experienced senior riders are capable of but it’s also important that I start looking at those who have been making good progress recently, and this will be a good test for Richard to see how he adapts at this level.”

The Bears hold a meeting for track staff in the Bears Bar at South Tees Motorsports Park tonight (7.30pm).

All fans are welcome to attend for a pre-season meet-up.

Man escapes Stockton flat after front door of his home is set on fire in arson attack

27 Feb 2014 11:47

Man knew what to do after smoke alarm activated in early hours after Cleveland Fire Brigade home safety visit just weeks before

An investigation is under way into a suspected arson attack after the front door of a home was “maliciously” set on fire.

Firefighters tackled a blaze at a flat on Wembley Way, Oxbridge, Stockton, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A man living in the property escaped the blaze unscathed - and knew what to do thanks to a home fire safety visit from Cleveland Fire Brigade just weeks ago.

Fire crews from Stockton and Thornaby attended the blaze just before 2.15am after receiving a call from the occupant who was alerted by a smoke alarm.

Stephen Graham, crew manager at Stockton Fire Station, said: “Someone had maliciously set fire to his front door.

“The man inside self-rescued - he escaped via a rear door in his flat.

“He had only just had a home fire safety visit.

“It was the smoke alarms which alerted him to the fire and he followed his emergency action plan which we had given him during the visit just weeks before.”

As a result of the fire, there was heat and smoke damage to the front door and smoke damage inside the property.

The fire brigade and Cleveland Police will now be investigating the blaze.

At the scene today, the area around the flat was cordoned off while officers carried out their inquiries.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman confirmed they were treating the incident as arson.

“There will now be a joint investigation,” she said.

Cleveland Fire Brigade carry out free home fire safety visits to give prevention advice and help put together planning escape routes if a fire does occur.

Where necessary the brigade will also provide and fit smoke alarms. Call 01429 874063 to book.

Hemlington man raped woman and attacked dog walker with hammer in Redcar, court told

27 Feb 2014 10:15

Anthony William Graham facing charges of attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, false imprisonment and two counts of rape

A man who bound and raped a woman also left a dog walker with irreparable brain damage after carrying out a hammer attack, a court heard.

Anthony William Graham had developed an “obsession” with his female victim before his attack, Teesside Crown Court was told.

Graham, of Doxford Walk, Hemlington, Middlesbrough, is on trial facing charges of attempted murder, causing grievous bodily harm with intent, false imprisonment and two counts of rape, all of which are alleged to have taken place in October last year.

He pleaded not guilty to all five offences.

Prosecutor Caroline Goodwin told a jury that on the night of October 6 last year, Graham, 46, entered a house in Redcar and grabbed his victim by the hair, dragging her to a nearby house where he attacked her more than once.

Ms Goodwin told the court: “The defendant had developed a fixation with her. By his own admission, he reported that he watched her.

“He would see where she was and with whom she was.”

On the day of the attack, Ms Goodwin said the victim was followed by the defendant to a relative’s house.

She said when the woman later left the house, Graham was waiting for her with a bunch of flowers.

She said because Graham felt hurt and angry at “being rebuffed”, he “was waiting to make his move and he was going to punish her.”

That night, the victim was in the kitchen of a house, dressed in pyjamas and a dressing gown, when she was grabbed from behind.

Ms Goodwin told jurors the woman was dragged by her hair out of the house to a nearby address.

She added: “He tied her up by actually using the belt from the dressing gown.

He was making repeated threats to kill her.

“He said he had paid someone £2,500 to have holes dug on the moors to put her in.

“She was tied up and terrified. He made it clear that he was going to have violent sex with her.”

He then raped her, the court heard, more than once.

The next night, Graham is accused of attacking a man, hitting him twice to the head with a hammer while he was out walking his dog, in what the prosecutor described as a “deliberate assault with a murderous intention.”

The 65-year-old was put into a coma after he suffered life-threatening head injuries in the “vicious” attack at around midnight on Chestnut Avenue in Redcar.

Ms Goodwin told the jury the victim would not be appearing in court as he was left with irreparable brain damage and was not fit to give evidence.

She also said that during prison visits while Graham was on remand, he was recorded making reference to a claw hammer, having a mask and burning his clothes.

He was also recorded using the phrase “I brayed him” and said: “I knew he was going to walk his dog, so I laid in wait for him.”

Proceeding.

Middlesbrough man and woman jailed after stealing £1,358 of cosmetics from Boots

27 Feb 2014 09:15

Kayleigh Elizabeth McCabe and David Mason appeared in court over thefts which took place on Stokesley High Street

Boots

A man and woman from Middlesbrough have been jailed for stealing £1,358 worth of cosmetics from Boots.

Kayleigh Elizabeth McCabe, 27, of Garvin Close, Middlesbrough, and David Mason, 33, of Colville Street, Middlesbrough, appeared in court over thefts which took place on Stokesley High Street.

Both defendants appeared at Northallerton Magistrates’ Court, where they were each sentenced to a total of 16 weeks’ imprisonment.

They were each given four weeks’ jail for the Stokesley offences, and a suspended 12-week sentence for previous offences was activated by the court to run concurrently with the four-week sentence.

Sergeant Nick Hill of Stokesley Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “The pair were apprehended thanks to information passed via the ShopWatch scheme and members of the public.”

Your Daily Muslim: Ali Mohamed Rage

Ali Mohamed Rage rocking the tablecloth look

Ali Mohamed Rage wearing a tablecloth

(Note: This Muslim’s last name is not pronounced “rage.” However, it is quite fitting.)

Somali Muslim Ali Mohamed Rage, also known as Sheikh Ali Dhere, is the head spokesman of al-Qaeda-linked jihadist group al-Shabaab. He is also a member of the group’s Shura Council, which discusses matters of sharia and organizational governance. Rage frequently gives press conferences on all sorts of delightful subjects, always involving the murder of innocent people. He has referred to fallen jihadis as “martyrs,” and frequently praises his virgin-gathering colleagues on jihadist forums.

In 2011, al-Shabaab used Rage to take credit for a car bombing that killed eight. He was also at the scene of the public execution (likely by beheading) of a captured soldier from Burundi. Some months passed, then Rage issued the following statement regarding al-Shabaab: “We are welcoming the naming of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri [as leader of al Qaeda.] We are going to work with him like we used to work with sheikh Osama [bin Laden.] We will be fulfilling the promise and the agreements with the former leader which means supporting the new leader.” Rage was also the intermediary used by al-Shabaab to reject government attempts at peace talks. al-Shabaab, like Islam, has a history of being unwilling to compromise.

“We wish to inform the Muslim people that the campaign against infidels will be back-to-back and by God’s grace will increase day by day and will increase in the coming hours. I will give a good tiding to the infidels: You will face big and broad blows.” Rage relayed that message to the media in October 2011. Big and broad blows against the infidels… definitely sounds like a religion of peace right there. The context of that statement further proves how kind Islam is – during that message, Rage claimed credit for a suicide bombing in Mogadishu, the capitol of Somalia.

Through 2013, Rage made several more press releases for al-Shabaab. The subjects of the releases varied from suicide bombings to condemnations of the Human Rights Watch. However, it was 2014 that showed how truly vile of a human being Rage is. In a press release sent to al-Jazeera, Rage dismissed the idea of negotiations and stated that al-Shabaab would continue its quest to slaughter infidels: “The people we are fighting with is because of ideology. They want to colonize us. They want to erase our religion, our people and our land. Those people bring a new face every time. Every new person that comes into office works for them. So for that reason, they are no different to us. Whomever the Christians bring, no matter their name or background, we will not negotiate with them because they have no decision-making powers. They have no powers to refuse or accept anything. What you lose by force you return by force. We will not negotiate with anyone. The country is ours.”

By now, it’s apparent that the only peace al-Shabaab wants is the kind where everyone else is dead. Led by jihadist sheikhs like Rage and Hassan Dahir Aweys, the group recruits young Muslims through its leaders’ and members’ extensive study of the Qur’an and Hadiths. What do they fill the young Muslims’ minds with? Even worse garbage than the seventh-century child porn that’s already in there. Rage stated: “Anyone who works for the apostate government, no matter where and at what level, they are supporting the apostates and the Christians who sent them. Our stand is clear is on such people. We will fight them and kill them anywhere we see them. Anyone who supports the Christians, either through the pen or by carrying a weapon, they are the same to us and we will kill them… We only attack a place when we are sure the people in there are the apostates, the Christians and those that support them.” How’s that for interfaith tolerance? Makes your left-wing neighbor look like an idiot for slapping that “Coexist” bumper sticker on her car, that’s for sure…

Aside from all the talk of killing infidels, Rage has also condemned Somalia’s education system. He claims that it is harmful because children are taught music, which is viewed by many Muslims as being haram (forbidden.)

Concern as Middlesbrough children are sold shisha sticks that mimic real cigarettes

27 Feb 2014 08:50

Products mimic real cigarettes by lighting up realistically when 'smoked' and releasing a flavoured vapour resembling cigarette smoke

An electronic cigarette similar to one being sold to children in Middlesbrough

Fake cigarettes that light up and smoke just like the real thing are being sold to children.

The sale of disposable electronic shisha sticks to under-18s is legal. But one mother today warned they have become a trend among some pupils.

The products mimic real cigarettes by lighting up realistically when “smoked” and releasing a flavoured vapour resembling cigarette smoke.

Although the shisha sticks contain no tar, carbon monoxide, tobacco or nicotine, parents have expressed concern regarding the nature of the products.

Because “smoking” shisha sticks has become a youth trend, one concerned mother, who did not want to be named to prevent her son from being singled out, expressed her concerns.

She said: “My son came back from Middlesbrough town centre and asked me on the night if he could use this pen that he had bought from a shop there.

“I found it very unsettling that kids were imitating smoking and I was really shocked that they would sell them to children. My son has just gone 12 but his friend only looks about 10.”

Although shisha sticks do not contain nicotine the mother is concerned about the behavioural impact of using such products.

She said: “It’s very addictive just holding it. I have never smoked but I can see that if you have got that mentality it could easily be habit forming.”

The sale of zero nicotine shisha sticks is not prohibited and a bill going through parliament to prohibit the sale of e-cigarettes to under-18s will not cover zero nicotine products.

The debate resembles the controversy over candy cigarettes which many critics believe could desensitize children, leading them to become smokers.

The decision to sell is left up to individual retailers and views on the sale of shisha sticks has varied.

Councillor Julia Rostron, Middlesbrough Council's executive member for adult social care and public health, said: “While the sale of these products to under-18s is not prohibited, we would hope that any retailer in the town would act responsibly over who they sell to.

“The use of any product that may be classed as ‘smoking related’ could lead a child or young person towards tobacco, which should be discouraged as strongly as possible.”

Members of the e-cigarette industry agreed.

Andrew Payne, director of e-cigarette company Socialites, said: “We would never consider selling any of the zero nicotine products to anyone under the age of 18.

“Socialites do not sell to under 18s or promote any of our products to under 18s. This is the company policy and ECITA ruling.”

Nobody was available for comment at either or the two branches of the Middlesbrough store that sell the shisha sticks.

£550M RBS BONUS POT TO REIGNITE ROW

Royal Bank of Scotland is set to reignite the row over pay today when it will reportedly reveal a £550 million staff bonus pot despite slumping into the red with an expected £8 billion loss.

The taxpayer-backed lender has agreed the bonus windfall with UK Financial Investments, the body charged with managing government stakes in banks, according to Sky News.

This would be a drop on the £607 million haul for 2012, although this is partly expected given the significant headcount reduction in its investment banking team.

3-YEAR PLAN TO TACKLE CHILD POVERTY

Controversial proposals to rewrite the official definition of poverty have been put on hold, Iain Duncan Smith signalled, as he prepared to unveil a three-year strategy to reduce the rate of child sufferers.

The Work and Pensions Secretary and Liberal Democrat education minister David Laws are expected to restate the Government’s commitment to end child poverty by 2020, despite recent rises and independent forecasts that the number of children in relative poverty could swell to more than three million by the end of the decade.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the new child poverty strategy could feature radical plans to cut water, food and fuel bills for low-income families as well as measures to address the “worklessness” afflicting the poorest households.

RED CARPET WELCOME FOR MERKEL

Angela Merkel arrives in London today for a high-profile visit which David Cameron hopes will bolster his bid to negotiate a better deal for the UK in the European Union.

The German chancellor, whose support will be pivotal to the Prime Minister’s reform efforts, is being granted the full red carpet welcome - including addressing Parliament and meeting the Queen.

She has been tipped to indicate her support for Britain staying in the EU and offer Mr Cameron backing over issues such as protecting non-eurozone countries from being outvoted on single market issues.

PLAN FOR BINDING ’PRENUP’ AGREEMENT

A so-called “prenup” law that allows a couple to set the terms of a divorce before they get married has been put forward by the Government’s law reform advisers.

Under the current law, couples can make pre- and post-nuptial agreements but they are not binding and the parties cannot be certain they will be upheld.

A report from the Law Commission, Matrimonial Property Needs and Agreements, includes a draft Bill which, if implemented, would bring legally-recognised “qualifying nuptial agreements” into effect.

SCHOOLS ’FAILING ON CAREERS ADVICE’

Careers advice for many teenagers is a “tick box exercise squeezed into a lunchtime break”, according to Nick Clegg.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Lib Dem leader is due to announce that schools are to face tougher requirements to provide decent careers guidance to pupils.

He will also suggest that local employers should be represented on every school governing body and that secondary schools should be made to publish more information about what their students go on to do after age 16.

DISABLED CLAIMANTS ’WAITING LONGER’

Disabled people are facing “distress and financial difficulties” as a result of the slow processing of claims under a new Government benefit scheme, a spending watchdog’s report has found.

The National Audit Office found that claimants for the new Personal Independence Payment, which will replace Disability Living Allowance, were waiting an average 107 days - and terminally ill patients 28 days - for a decision on their cases, rather than the predicted processing times of 74 days and 10 days respectively.

Within six months of the introduction of PIPs in some areas of the north of England in April 2013, a backlog of 92,000 cases had built up with private contractors Atos and Capita and the Department of Work and Pensions had made decisions in only 16% of the expected number of cases.

RIGBYS: NOW LEE CAN REST IN PEACE

The family of murdered soldier Lee Rigby has welcomed the lengthy jail terms for his killers, saying he will now be able to rest in peace.

Michael Adebolajo, 29, was given a whole life term for the barbaric killing and Michael Adebowale, 22, was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 45 years.

The fusilier’s mother, Lyn Rigby, 47, of Middleton, Manchester, said she spoke to her son as she watched the two fanatics receive justice.

MIGRATION FIGURES DUE FOR RELEASE

Official migration figures are to be released today amid growing concerns that Government curbs are sending a message out that Britain is “closed for business”.

Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the year to September 2013 will also reveal if the Government is moving closer or further from its target of bringing net migration down to the tens of thousands.

In the last set of quarterly statistics, released in November last year, net flow of migrants saw its first annual increase for two years.

HIGH COURT RULES ON POLICE SHOOTING

The High Court rules today on a bid by a police marksman to challenge a public inquiry finding that he used excessive force when he killed robbery suspect Azelle Rodney.

Lawyers for the officer, known only as E7, say the finding is “irrational and unsustainable”.

The marksman is asking two judges for permission to seek judicial review of conclusions reached by the inquiry chairman, Sir Christopher Holland, that Mr Rodney was unlawfully killed - a finding E7’s lawyers describe as “tantamount to murder”.

10,000 AT RISK OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

At least 10,000 women and children are at risk of being murdered or seriously injured in cases of domestic violence by partners or former partners, police figures show.

Police assessments from 33 of the 44 forces in England, Wales and Scotland obtained by the Guardian revealed that 10,952 people, mainly women, were categorised as being at high risk of facing a violent death in the home or of suffering severe violence, in the year to November.

The newspaper said that as domestic violence is widely under-reported the true figure is likely to be higher, and claimed that numbers could be further skewed by police forces gathering and collating information in different ways.

'Hopefully something will happen in the summer somewhere': Shay Given believes Aston Villa want him 'out of the door'

Following a hugely successful loan spell with Boro, Shay Given appears to have reconciled himself to a future away from Villa Park

Shay Given recieves his award from Kath Tomlinson

Shay Given believes Aston Villa want him “out of the door”.

The veteran Irish keeper is back in the West Midlands following a hugely successful three-month loan spell with Boro.

However, he admits he could be sent back out on loan again before the end of the season and could leave Villa for good in the summer.

Given’s current contact with Paul Lambert’s Premier League outfit doesn’t end until June 2016 and the fact he reportedly earns around £50,000 per week limits the number of clubs that can afford to sign the goalie to a long-term contract.

Under the current rules, Boro can’t take him back on loan this season, but that doesn’t stop the 37-year-old joining another club.

“I might go back out on loan again somewhere before the end of March,” he told the Birmingham Mail.

“Aston Villa want me out of the door, so something might happen.

“It has been really frustrating not playing, that’s obvious for everyone to see, and the window doesn’t open until the summer, so maybe there is a Championship club out there who might want me.”

Given appears to have reconciled himself to a future away from Villa Park but finding a club willing to match his salary could prove difficult.

Aitor Karanka has made no secret of his desire to sign him but, if Boro are still in the Championship next season, finding the cash to force the deal through could prove nigh on impossible.

“Hopefully something will happen in the summer somewhere,” Given said.

Shay Given was voted Ramsdens Boro Player of the Month for January and was handed his award before the Leeds match by lifelong supporter and season card holder Kath Tomlinson.

North Ormesby slashing and robbery accused cleared after victim told jurors he was too 'off his nut' to remember attack

27 Feb 2014 07:45

Terry Michael Watson found not guilty of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery by jury on judge's direction

Teesside Crown Court

A man accused of a knife slashing and robbery was cleared after the alleged victim said he was too “off his nut” to remember the attack.

Terry Michael Watson, 32, was found not guilty of both charges he faced by a jury on a judge’s direction halfway through a trial yesterday.

Judge Howard Crowson halted the case after he agreed with the defence that there was not enough evidence to continue the case.

The main prosecution witness David Stainsby, 31, had told the court his police statement describing a knife assault was “full of lies”.

His signed statement read: “I thought I was going to die last night due to the amount of blood.

“The last time I lost consciousness I believed that was the end, I wasn’t going to wake up. This attack was completely unprovoked.”

At Teesside Crown Court this week, he said the statement was untrue. “I was off my nut. I don’t know what happened,” he said.

The Crown said Watson slashed Mr Stainsby twice to the left cheek with a kitchen-type knife in a home on Kindersley Street, North Ormesby, Middlesbrough.

Mr Stainsby was given 24 stitches to his cheek and more to his left ear, jurors were told during the trial.

His original statement said he and his partner were eating tea when three people barged in at about 6.30pm on September 28 last year.

It stated a man swung at him with a knife, shouted “give me your tablets, give me your coin” and threatened his partner “if you give a statement you’ll get twice what he got”.

Mr Stainsby had to be arrested to bring him to court.

In the witness box, he said he only remembered somebody in front of him stabbing him in the face.

He said some parts of his statement were wrong or false, others he couldn’t remember.

He said he was “buzzing” at the time after taking heroin, methadone, opiates and crack cocaine.

“I was that doped up I didn’t feel anything,” he added. “I couldn’t see, I was that out of it. I was in and out of consciousness all day.”

He told the court he tried to withdraw his statement. He said it wasn’t Watson who attacked him as he’d seen the real assailant in the street.

He said an officer was “insistent that he’d got the right lad”.

“I don’t want the wrong person to go to jail for something they haven’t done,” Mr Stainsby said. He went to a solicitor to retract his statement.

Watson, of Ripley Court, Middlesbrough, denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery of a laptop, mobile phone, £20 and sleeping tablets.

Nigel Soppitt, defending, said Watson did pick up a knife and jab out at Mr Stainsby - but maintained he did so in self defence.

He said Mr Stainsby was the attacker as he was “crazy” on drugs.

Mr Stainsby leapt up saying “you owe me money” then pressed a fork to Watson’s throat and pinned him against a wall, added Mr Soppitt.

Mr Stainsby agreed this could “quite possibly” have happened.
