Five teenagers arrested after taxi driver is punched and robbed in Ingleby Barwick Tesco car park

Incident happened at about 1.15am Sunday as the driver was punched in the face before the money was taken from his car

A taxi driver was assaulted and robbed of his takings in an early morning robbery in a supermarket car park.


The driver was parked outside Tesco in Ingleby Barwick when the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday.


Police say the incident happened at about 1.15am and that the driver was punched in the face before the money was taken from his car.


He was not seriously injured in the incident.


After the attack, the suspects ran off from the Myton Road store in the direction of Blair Avenue.


The force’s helicopter was launched to search for the suspects.


A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said five male teenagers, aged between 17 and 19, were arrested on suspicion of robbery. They have been bailed pending further inquiries.
