Teesside funnyman Patrick Monahan donned a pink apron to serve tea and cake to shoppers in Middlesbrough - ahead of his homecoming comedy gig in May.
Comic Patrick learnt the art of tea-making at the Olde Young Tea House on Grange Road in Middlesbrough, and served up some sweet treats to customers on Tuesday morning.
He loves cake so much he even named his latest show after it, with sell-out Edinburgh Festival hit Cake Charmer heading to the Town Hall Crypt on Saturday, May 17.
Patrick said: “I can’t wait to be back in Boro - I usually know half of the audience, and the way my shows go I usually know the other half by the end of it.
“Some comics get drunk after shows, but I’d honestly rather have a piece of cake and a cup of tea.
“So spending the morning helping out and surrounded by cake in a gorgeous little tea house like this is absolutely spot on.”
Despite his love of the sweet stuff, Patrick had given up cake for Lent - and also in preparation for the London Marathon, which he ran in aid of Zoe’s Place.
“Ah that was fantastic. I had no idea how I was going to do it beforehand - but it was loads of fun. It’s all about pacing yourself, when I did the Great North Run I spent the first part sprinting to try and keep up with Mo Farah but I couldn’t do that in the marathon, it would have killed me.”
And practising for the run, Patrick also got plenty of ideas for material for his Middlesbrough homecoming performance.
“I did a 20-mile run all the way around Boro, so I saw some sights and it was a good bit of research for the show,” he continued.
“I was getting waved and cheered in Marton, and potatoes thrown at me in Brambles Farm!”
Cake Charmer comes to the Town Hall Crypt on May 17 at 8pm. Tickets are £14 or £12 concession, from the box office on 01642 729729 or http://ift.tt/1edwSZT
