India: Human Rights activist Irom Sharmila re-arrested in Manipur

Imphal (Manipur), January 24:

Human rights activist Irom Chanu Sharmila has re-arrested after a local court rejected her charges of attempt to suicide and ordered her immediate release from custody.

The activist was released from a state hospital after a court found no evidence to support earlier charges filed by state prosecutors over her alleged attempt to commit suicide by refusing food.

After walking out free, Sharmila again began her fast through the night. She was examined by a team of doctors from the government hospital. She was asked by the police to go to a hospital but she refused.

She is in a government hospital under police watch where she is force-fed through the nose.

Sharmila, known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, began her fast in November 2000 after ten people were killed in a shooting at a bus stop near her home in Manipur. Activists blame the army for the killings but no arrests have been made in case. (ANI)
