Amelia Lily prepares for Joseph tour: 'It's been a whirlwind, I still can't get my head around it'

Amelia Lily admits the call to join the UK tour of one of the world’s favourite musicals came completely out of the blue.

But after a whirlwind few days, she says she can’t wait to get to grips with her role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in time for her opening night in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

As reported, the Nunthorpe 20-year-old is taking on the key role of The Narrator in the latest production of the Rice-Lloyd Webber show by theatre impresario Bill Kenwright.

Singer Marcus Collins originally had the part, but his surprise late withdrawal gave Amelia a chance she was determined to take.

She told The Gazette: “I don’t know what happened really - all I know is I got the call.

“I was just happily working on my music but then I got a call last Friday, asking if I’d audition.

“You only live once and I’ve wanted to do theatre for a long time, so I had to go for it.

“By Monday, I was auditioning in front of Bill Kenwright. Then I left the office and he offered me the job.

“I just went in with an open mind - they would either like me or they wouldn’t, but thankfully I got the role.

“It’s been a whirlwind, though - so spontaneous, I still can’t really get my head around it.

“And I’ve got so much to learn in so little time, it’s freaking me out to be honest.”

Amelia only met the cast for the first time yesterday at rehearsals in Watford.

But she’s no stranger to hearing the songs, with brother Lewis having come third in the BBC’s 2007 Joseph-related show, Any Dream Will Do.

She said: “I’m playing a different role to Lewis, of course, but he loved being a part of the show and I’m sure I will too.

“I’ve got a lot to learn - including all the colours in Joseph’s coat! But while I’m familiar with the story and the songs everyone knows, there’s lots in there. I probably sing the most of anyone in the show.

“Act One is the toughest - I’m never off stage. It’ll be very intense.”

But Amelia says she still hasn’t given up hope of releasing an album.

She said: “I’m still with Warner Brothers, but music takes time. As well as having an album being prepared, I still wanted to do something in the meantime. I get bored very easily. So to have something like this to do alongside my music is fantastic.”

As The Narrator is a singing-only role, Amelia’s Teesside accent won’t be getting an airing. But she says that already, the demands of the part means she’s learning new parts to her voice.

She added: “I just want to have fun. Everyone seems lovely and I get to tour the UK, so it’s a great opportunity for me.

“I’m young and I want to have an exciting life, so I can’t wait.”
