Dimi Konstantopoulos rewarded for recent form with new one-year Boro deal

Boro goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos has been rewarded for his fine recent form by landing a new one-year contract extension.

The Greek stopper has been a crucial part of Boro's promotion-chasing side and has re-emerged as the club's No 1, after starting the season behind Tomas Mejias in the pecking order.

But the 36-year-old has proven his worth to the Teesside cause, and has now pledged his future to the club by signing a new deal that will see him stay at the club beyond the end of the season.

The ex-Hartlepool goalkeeper has kept 14 clean sheets in the Championship this season and is part of the league's best defensive unit .

Boro head coach Aitor Karanka admitted he is delighted to secure the keeper's services for at least another season.

"It's great news for everyone. Dimi is the kind of player you want in your squad," Karanka told the club's website .

"He was the third goalkeeper in the squad when we came here, and now he is number one. He has done really well.

"He brings experience to the dressing room and he is a very important member of our squad on and off the pitch."

After missing the defeat against Leeds due to suspension, Dimi returned to Boro's line-up for Tuesday's 1-0 home win against Bolton.

He is likely to be between the posts for Boro's trip to Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
