Pensioner knocked down by bus in Stockton escapes with minor injuries

An elderly woman escaped with only minor injuries after being hit by a bus in Stockton.

The 79-year-old was knocked over by the vehicle on High Street, outside Debenhams - the fifth person to be hit on the same stretch of road in a matter of months.

And Cleveland Police has today confirmed that the pensioner only sustained minor injuries to her ankle in the incident.

Another woman, who was also injured during the accident, suffered bruising. The 64-year-old, who was travelling on the bus in question, was standing up at the time and fell over.

Emergency services were called to the scene at about 9.45am yesterday.

It is the fifth time an incident of this nature has happened on High Street since last September.

Kelly Marie Evis, from Stockton, was hit by a bus on September 15 and later died from her injuries.

An inquest found that Miss Evis’s death had been an accident.

A further three people have also been hit by buses on the same stretch. Two survived but Dorothy Bryan, who suffered serious injuries after being hit by on December 4 last year, died on February 24.

A spokesperson for Stockton Council, said they were “concerned” to hear of the accident. “We wish those involved a speedy recovery.”

They added: “Like all major schemes involving changes to the highway, the redevelopment of Stockton High Street is subject to a road safety audit. The audit process is ongoing and any issues raised will of course be acted on.”

Stockton’s High Street officially re-opened at the weekend following its two-and-a-half-year multimillion-pound regeneration.

Speaking to The Gazette in December last year, James Wharton, MP for Stockton South said the changes to road markings could be creating confusion.
