Teenager denies hurling fireworks at firefighter on Bonfire Night

A teenager has denied hurling fireworks at a firefighter on Bonfire Night.

Joshua Jake Smith appeared before Teesside Magistrates’ Court today accused of obstructing an emergency worker and affray.

Fire crews had been called to a rubbish heap bonfire just off Broadwell Road in Easterside, Middlesbrough, on the afternoon of Bonfire Night last year when “flare-type” fireworks were allegedly thrown at one of them by two youths.

Prosecuting, Tahira Bourshier, said: “The officer was not hit by the fireworks however they were fired in his direction.”

It is also claimed the officer was verbally abused in the incident.

Smith, 19, of Eccleston Walk, Easterside, Middlesbrough, who appeared in court with his dad, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case was adjourned by the magistrates and Smith was granted unconditional bail.

He is due to appear for trial at Teesside Crown Court on March 18.

As reported, a 17-year-old, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was given a six-month youth rehabilitation order with supervision and some reparation activities on Friday, after admitting obstructing or hindering an emergency worker and affray.
