Aitor Karanka has thanked Shay Given for his outstanding service on and off the pitch.
The vastly-experienced Irish keeper, who returns to his parent club Aston Villa at the end of the month, is eligible to play three more games for Boro before his 93-day loan lapses.
Karanka was keen to keep him at the club until the end of the season but it proved impossible to thrash an extended deal before the January window closed.
“We couldn’t do anything because his club wanted to keep him,” said the Boro head coach, who is grateful for Given’s contribution on and off the pitch.
“He has been excellent since he came to our club.
“He is a big personality in the changing room and is helping our other keepers.
“So we say thank you to Shay and I hope he will continue to play as well as he has until the last second he is with us.”

Given, 37, has helped transform Boro from a team that looked incapable of keeping clean sheets to one that has achieved seven shut-outs in nine Championship fixtures.
He admits it’s frustrating that he won’t be able to stay until the end of the season but has enjoyed playing for Boro.
“I wasn’t playing at Aston Villa so this has whetted my appetite,” he said.
“I have enjoyed the buzz of making saves and being in and around the team.”
