Market Cross raids: Further arrest in connection with armed robberies at Teesside jewellery stores

Detectives investigating armed robberies at two jewellery stores have made another arrest.

This morning, Cleveland Police’s Organised Crime Unit arrested a man in the Manchester area in connection with armed robberies at two Market Cross jewellery stores on Teesside.

The 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery following incidents at the Yarm shop on November 10 and at the Middlesbrough store on January 13.

The man is currently in police custody awaiting questioning.

Two other men, one aged 19 who was arrested in connection with the Middlesbrough robbery and the other aged 24 in connection with the Yarm incident, remain on bail pending further inquiries.

A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Officers would again like to appeal to local hoteliers and those who run or own local bed and breakfast venues to contact police if they had any guests who may have spoken with a North-west accent who may have raised their suspicions around the time of the Middlesbrough robbery on Tuesday, January 13.”

In both robberies, weapons believed to be axes, were used and the thieves fled with hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery.

Speaking after the Middlesbrough robbery, Dawn Welsh, company manager at Market Cross Jewellers, praised the staff for their bravery and quick thinking after they activated “antibandit” smoke during the terrifying attack.

Mrs Welsh, who has worked for the company for 22 years, told The Gazette: “I have to say, what great staff. They reacted so quickly. If that fog hadn’t been set off straight away they would have had a lot longer.

“Once the smoke comes down, you literally can’t see in front of your face.”
