Three-day Dinky sale at Thornaby auction makes £30,000 more than expected

A collection of 2,000 toys has sold at auction for a cool £230,000.

The much-anticipated three day Dinky sale at toy auctioneers Vectis was originally expected to make £200,000.

The collection has been lovingly built up over 50 years by retired car dealer Raymond Hainsworth, 78, and his wife Pat.

Yesterday, on the last day of the sale, the toys up for auction made £98,729.

Highlights included a Leyland “Corn Products Ltd” Tanker which sold for £6960, a Leyland Octopus Flat Truck which went for £4080 and a “Transporter” gift set comprising of Bedford Pullmore Car Transporter, a light blue trailer and four cars.

Raymond and Pat started collecting when their twin boys Ian and David were babies, and their first Christmas was spent surrounded by a new train set.

The couple, who also have a daughter Melanie, have travelled thousands of miles across the country to build up their collection, visiting auctions and fairs.
