The hosts raced out of the blocks against their play-off chasing opponents and led 2-0 after just 11 minutes thanks to forward pairing Patrick Bamford and Jelle Vossen.
Wolves looked stunned and could have had even more of a mountain to climb had Albert Adomah's strike hit the net instead of crunching off the bar.
Bakary Sako pulled one back for the visitors in the second half to ensure a nervous finale but Boro held on for three crucial points.
