Cleveland Fire Brigade to take part in fresh 24-hour strike action by firefighters

A fresh 24-hour strike by firefighters has been announced.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has said industrial action will take place by firefighters across the country on Tuesday February 25 from 7am until 7am on Wednesday, February 26.

The decision to strike this month is the latest move made by the FBU in its national dispute with central government surrounding pension arrangements.

Cleveland Fire Brigade will once again be taking part in the industrial action and has contingency arrangements in place to provide emergency cover during periods of disruption, which includes professional firefighters supported by auxiliary firefighters.

Ian Hayton, chief fire officer at Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We are disappointed that a negotiated settlement has still not been reached in this national dispute and that a further strike has been announced.

“I can understand the firefighters’ frustration in not receiving an improved pension offer which has led to further strike action being called.

“As always the safety of our communities is, and always will be our number one priority. The public can be reassured that we will provide a professional emergency response during the strike, as we have done in previous periods of industrial action. We will respond promptly to all emergency calls received and the community volunteers who have come forward to be trained as auxiliary firefighters will play an important part in that response.

“Again I appeal to the public to take extra care during the strike in order to reduce the risk of a fire in homes, businesses and communities. Over the next week we will be providing extra advice, support and guidance on how to stay safe via the media and online, so please take some time to access and read this potentially lifesaving information.”
