Middlesbrough Imagineer event is science and engineering bonanza - sponsored

What do a comedy night, an evening of cocktails and a life drawing workshop have in common?

They are just some of the activities taking place as part of Middlesbrough’s first Imagineer event – a six-day science and engineering bonanza which it’s hoped will fuel people’s interest.

Taking place from March 2-7, Imagineer will be jam-packed with activities celebrating all that's exciting about science and engineering – and organisers hope hundreds will get involved.

Teessiders are invited to mix it up at a ‘Science of Cocktails’ event with Newcastle’s Centre For Life specialist Noel Jackson.

Alternatively, discover the science behind the food on our plates at a Molecular Gastronomy workshop with chemical chef Sean Wilkinson.

Laugh till you produce lysozyme (tears) at a bumper comedy night or sign up to find out more about the art of shadows and light at an informal life drawing session.

A whole host of famous faces will be visiting Middlesbrough as part of the week-long event - including comedian Helen Keen.

Renowned for her hilarious take on Science, Helen has worked Brian Cox and Robin Ince, having toured festivals across the UK including Edinburgh Fringe, and has since recorded her own BBC Radio 4 series, based solo show ‘It’s Rocket Science!’

As part of the festival the Middlesbrough FC Health Bus will be visiting fans at the Riverside Stadium on Tuesday, 5 March between 6pm and 7.45pm.

Step on board for nutritional advice, guidance and top tips on how to stay in shape.

Check your BMI and blood pressure and learn about how to improve on these in just a few simple steps.

There will also be a speed cage- where you can compete with friends to see who can shoot and score at the highest possible speed!

The highlight of the week will be a fantastic Science and Engineering Community Day at Middlesbrough College.

This free family event will feature interactive stalls, workshops and live shows with loads of hands on activities to get involved with.

Taking place between 10am and 3pm on Saturday, 7 March, you are invited to extract DNA, explore the solar system, or even design your own video game, as an array of regional and national companies have been invited into the college for what will be an unforgettable experience.

Imagineer has come about thanks to the efforts of staff at Middlesbrough College.

Its dedicated STEM team put forward an enthusiastic pitch in order to secure funding from the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) Science and Society Community Challenge Grant Scheme.

A spokesman for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills said: “The department is pleased to support this project, which takes science into a community setting.”

This is all part of Middlesbrough College’s commitment to making the region a hotbed for STEM skills, by delivering first class training to those wanting a career in a STEM industry, and by supporting the growing science and engineering industry in the region.

That commitment has resulted in the college investing £20m into its STEM facilities – the culmination being the construction of a £12m purpose-built STEM Centre of Excellence, the doors of which will open to students in 2015.

The centre – which is taking shape at the Middlehaven site - will play a key role in bridging the skills gap, meeting the needs of employers across a wide range of sectors and producing a highly-skilled workforce for the future.
