Four year old Ingleby Barwick youngster set to raise money in memory of his sister, Rebecca Sands

A four year old Ingleby Barwick youngster is preparing to have lots of fun this half term by raising money in memory of his younger sister.

Mikey Sands is taking part in a sponsored bounce which will be running in aid of the Remembering Rebecca charity.

The Remembering Rebecca charity was set up in memory of 21-month-old, Rebecca Sands, who died from Lissencephaly, a rare brain condition, in August 2010.

Rebecca’s parents, Gemma and Ian Sands, who are also mum to Mikey, four and Charlotte, 11, set up the charity to raise awareness of Lissencephaly and other neurological conditions.

Four and a half years on, Rebecca’s memory is still being kept alive thanks to fundraising events like Mikey’s.

Gemma, 37, who works as a teacher at Rye Hills School in Redcar, said: “Mikey sees Charlotte doing fundraising all of the time. He’s always wanted to do tombolas with her.

“He just wanted to do something himself.

“Mikey said, I am bouncing to raise money for Rebecca.”

So far, around 20 youngsters have signed up to take part in the fun bounce event which will take place at Hemlington Recreation Centre on Wednesday, February, 18. Children from the baby gym class at the recreation centre will also be taking part in their own sponsored bounce.

Proud mum, Gemma added: “I am quite used to Charlotte doing fundraising but Mikey was only three weeks old when we lost Rebecca. He doesn’t really know her but he talks about her everyday.

“He asks questions all of the time.

“They are just aware that children are different. It’s nice that they want to help.”

The sponsored bounce will take place between 11am and 12pm. There will also be a tea party afterwards for all to enjoy which will run from 12pm.

Charlotte’s half term fundraiser, in the form of a Frozen-themed party, will take place on Monday, February 16 at Ingleby Barwick Community Hall between 1pm and 3pm.
