Parkway roadworks: Been made late by A174 revamp? More than half of drivers have...

More than half of all drivers using a stretch of the Parkway in Middlesbrough will arrive late, new figures suggest.

The trunk road - between the A1044 Sporting Lodge roundabout and the A19 junction - has been listed among the most “unreliable” journeys in the country.

It details a series of roads on which motorists are more likely to face delays than not.

The Highways Agency figures relate to the average performance of each road in the 12 months to December 2014.

And the Parkway section of the A174 was one of 20 main roads - motorways or major A-roads - where more than half of all journeys resulted in the driver being late due to delays.

The worst was the A404(M) at Windsor, where only 34.2% of journeys were classed as being ‘on time’ in 2014.

But motorists on that part of the A174 in Middlesbrough fared little better - with only 45.6% of drivers arriving ‘on time’ last year.

The A174 is currently undergoing £7.9m works to increase the capacity of the Parkway Interchange.

Work began last May and is expected to run until March.

Improvements are also being carried out on the A174/A1044 Thornaby Road junction.

As reported earlier this month, the Highways Agency apologised to the rush-hour commuters who faced delays of up to 90 minutes on the road.

Lengthy queues built up on the road after the lights on the A19 interchange roundabout went out of sync - resulting in only a few cars being let through at a time.

And it is not the only bad news facing Teesside drivers.

At the beginning of the year the Gazette reported how roadworks in the region last three times longer than the national average.

According to the Department for Transport, each set of delay-causing roadworks in the area covering Middlesbrough, Stockton, Redcar and Cleveland and Hartlepool laste for an average of 34 days in 2014.
