Police warn fans they will 'promptly react' to any trouble at Boro clash with Leeds

Police have warned fans they will “promptly react” to anyone who causes trouble at Boro’s home clash against Leeds tomorrow .

Cleveland Police will be on high alert around the town centre as fans descend on the Riverside Stadium for the game which kicks off at 12.15pm..

“Our aim is to work together with both clubs to facilitate a safe and enjoyable game,” said Superintendent Mark Thornton.

“Some disruption may be possible due to the sheer volume of people attending the fixture.

“We will promptly react to any disorder or criminal offences that may take place and those involved will be dealt with appropriately.

“We can assure members of the public that we are well prepared and well equipped to deal with any incidents or issues that arise and I hope that everybody enjoys their day.”

The warning comes after previous games between the teams saw trouble.

Loyal Middlesbrough FC supporters were allegedly targeted earlier this season as they made their way to Leeds United’s Elland Road ground.

Glass bottles were said to be hurled at their coach while stuck in traffic smashing a window ahead of the 1-0 defeat in August last year.

And in 2010 police made 23 arrests after rival fans clashed outside the Riverside and in Middlesbrough town centre following the end of the Championship match.

A Boro supporter was also jailed in 2013 after his role in a clash between Leeds fans.
