Wearside League: David Bannen-inspired Wolviston win would be just what the doctor ordered

Hulking goalkeeper David Bannen will keep his place in goal tomorrow as basement boys Wolviston travel to face Spennymoor Town Reserves at Coxhoe in the Wearside League.

Bannen is a man mountain at 6ft 9ins and has already distinguished himself between the Villagers’ sticks.

He saved a penalty on his debut at Easington Colliery last week, but still ended up on the losing side as Wolviston bowed out of the Wearside League Cup in a 2-1 defeat.

Striker Chris Fairless returns but central midfielder Ian Danby and sweeper Luke Bennington are out.

Fifth-placed Redcar Athletic have doubts over several players at Ashbrooke Belford House as they return to league obligations following last week’s League Cup penalties defeat at Moors Reserves.

Joe Blackburn has only just returned to the Redcar first team, but has picked up a hamstring injury, as has Michael Woodhouse.

Winger Sam Webster is expected to be fit however after a recent shin injury.

Midfielders Alex Maphosa and Liam Fox produced solid showings after being promoted from the reserves last week and should retain their places in the squad.

Adam Hartnett has also thrown his name into the hat following a top display in the reserves’ 5-3 win over Cargo Fleet.

After beating Horden 1-0 in a keenly-fought Wearside League Cup contest, Stockton Town get back to their priority of winning the title at Jarrow.

Captain Stephen Roberts is still recovering from his ligament trouble, and hopes to return next week against Redcar Athletic.

Tony Johnson is doing light training as he looks to play at least one more game this season, but other than that manager Michael Dunwell has a full squad to select from.

Stockton will be looking to extend their club record run of seven clean sheets to eight at Jarrow.

Stockton’s next goal will be their 600th in the 224 Wearside League and Cup games.
